This will be hard because it involves some unapologetic criticism of Nancy Pelosi, a woman who has essentially dedicated her life to moving the Democratic party forward, with some success, in passing a lot of progressive legislation that helped working-class and poor people. And To. Be. Sure. – Pelosi alone doesn’t bear the blame for where we stand. But a campaign to install Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“AOC”) as Minority Leader of the powerful House Oversight Committee failed this week due to Nancy Pelosi using her remaining political capitol to install moderate Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) to the position. Pelosi believes Connolly, as a moderate, is best suited to represent the Democratic party going forward and broaden its appeal to voters generally. Normally I would agree, or – at least, I’d admit that Pelosi would know better than me and defer. Normally.
I do know this. I know that I have watched video of AOC being the single most prepared member of that committee such that she made better use of her five minutes than I’ve seen in a long time. I also know that when she did so, she wasn’t some fire-flinging crazed liberal so much as a prepared, principled, citizen – concerned about the future. Below, I found just one example in which AOC looked more than just very prepared, but someone who brought the exact “Yes or No” questions that even Republicans would likely support. Indeed, one can see that Mark Zuckerberg was uncomfortable:
And the above video wasn’t even the one I was looking for in trying to find an example of various hearings where AOC came with documented proof at her side and began asking yes or no questions. Again, these are hearings in which her political philosophy – as a strong progressive, is moved aside, nearly irrelevant to someone who is simply very prepared and wants very important questions answered with a “yes” or “no” in hearings – the type of hearing in which most representatives spend the entire time talking.
On simple merit it would seem that AOC should have been considered apart from possible concerns about her being a progressive and not listed as a moderate. Even the committee vote was very close:

This should be considered with the following statement as framed by Mediaite:Â
Pelosi is using her remaining political capital to try and reposition the Democratic Party to what she sees as a winning posture for future elections and clearly has no faith in progressive stalwart Ocasio-Cortez to broaden the party’s appeal.
“Reposition the Democratic party” such that it is stronger and broadens their appeal. That sounds very sensible. And normally I would completely defer to Pelosi’s assessment. Except at this point, someone has to acknowledge that no one is winning anything nowadays by being more moderate across the middle in an attempt to broaden a party’s appeal. During the run up to Republican primaries, we saw over and over again polls demonstrating that the majority of Republicans favored someone “other than” Donald Trump, in some combination of support for DeSantis, Haley, or even Ramaswamy. In ever the Iowa 2024 Iowa caucus, almost half of Iowa’s Republicans voted for someone besides Trump. And yet Trump won – the GOP didn’t move to broaden its appeal, it went with its own hardliner and won.
I have said that I think the Democrats have blown it by focusing too much on identity politics and I actually believe that more so than ever. I think the focus should be on pounding economic relief and opportunity for everyone – and that means helping a lot of conservative, white, working-class poor too, not just the people we normally support. I think the focus should be on promoting union rights, workers rights, increasing wages, increasing subsidies not to the rich but poor, universal pre-Kindergarten, all of it – and do it as radical progressives fighting the establishment. Do not apologize. If you don’t get economic freedom and relief for the working poor passed, nothing else matters.
This seems to be a time in which the best way forward is to throw away what used to be conventional wisdom about democratic “tents” and broadening a base of ideas. Bernie Sanders is so far left that he can’t even call himself a Democrat (He runs as an Independent and calls himself a “Social Democrat”) and yet Bernie Sanders had and has far more appeal among some Trump supporters. “Bernie bros” like Joe Rogan supported Sanders in 2020 while supporting Trump this year. I am not sure that moving to “moderation” wins a damn thing anymore. People saw the “third-way” from 1990 until 2020 – and the only thing that happened is that the middle class fell further behind than ever.
I think what wins is a move to what you unapologetically believe and a refusal to bow to entrenched interests, a willingness to push back at the perceived establishment. I think it is also critical that Democrats – who have clearly lost this four to twelve year window, must now move toward appeal to the next generation. Forget Baby Boomers (Sorry), and even begin to forget us in Gen-X, it is time to allow the Millenials and Gen-Z take over because, well – whatever we handed them is clearly destroyed. We see a stacked SCOTUS, and the other branches of government all in one party’s hands. Whatever else we can argue, after all hope and change, after build back better, after all of it, here we are, awaiting Project 2025, martial law, retribution, the destruction of the FBI-DOJ, using the military to put undocumented immigrants in camps (And wait until you see the economic devastation to all – including Trump’s most fevered supporters – of such a movement, our country’s economy will grind to a halt) causing even more unrest, all of it. That’s where we stand and that’s what we’ve handed every Millenial and Gen-Z voter, conservative to liberal – I am not sure a bet on a moderate so as to “broaden the party’s appeal” is what we’re after.
I think it is best to look at what is happening across the landscape and go with someone who is A) Highly, impressively, astoundingly, effective and prepared as a talented and young politician, someone who would – by all accounts – prepare the committee with just as much commitment and “can do” spirit, along with B) Someone who is anti-establishment, young, and believes what she believes and really doesn’t care what you think about it. Believe it or not, people on the Right are far more disposed to listen to AOC and her case for economic relief to the working class than they are to Nancy Pelosi.
From everything I see, there is no benefit to be had by yearning for a moderate middle that no longer exists. We are now entrenched in identity politics such that we “identify” with a “tribe” more than beliefs, you don’t necessarily know what your tribe believes but you definitely know your tribe – and so it’s best to put someone in place who will be extremely effective in preparation, is someone who is young enough to be visible and in tune with the majority of other young politicians and influencers, and someone who believes what she believes such that she won’t be seen as working for the establishment or moderate middle. That person is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Amazing that I wholly disagree with Nancy Pelosi. This was a good shot that I believe was missed because once again the Democrats run to perceived safety while ignoring reality and using a two-decade old playbook that was irrelevant in 2016, and only more so now.
To the extent it matters, I also know that there are other major factors that went into where we stand now. I just know that while Pelosi is to be lauded for all she did in her career, given the last six years and where the country stands now? I am not sure she is best-positioned to advise going forward. Missed opportunity IMO.

I appreciate Nancy for all she’s done in the many years she’s served this country, but she was wrong here.
I’m sure it’s hard to stop using all that power, but it’s time for new experienced leaders
AOC is always prepared and one of the last Democrats that the Republicans wanted to fill the spot. That alone is reason enough to give it to AOC.
Dems have got to let the you get crowd in. If not, we will continue to lose, and then what?
Huge mistake, damn.
Democrats “moving” to “moderate” Center, will LOOSE again in 2026! Too many “Dino’s” in the Dem party, already! Why are Progressive’s being SHUT-OUT in our Liberal party? I have noticed, this silencing of Progressives for Decades. Dem’s have been too WEAK for TOO long! We NEED more Progressive “fighters” for the middle/poor Class. This has been OBVIOUS for way too long!
Why would anyone vote for GOP Lite?!? Every time we move to the center, we get clobbered. It’s like we’re incapable of learning from past mistakes. 🤬
Not surprising. Pelosi is a corporate shill, a fully owned subsidiary of the donor class.
A few weeks ago, I saw on DK a piece about the fact that dems need to talk the base and listen to them. Their example was that among hispanics, many didn’t care that the immigration bill was shot down because it did not include a path for citizenship for the many undocumented people who have been here a long time. This did surprise me, as I thought that hispanics tend to be conservative in their views. It went on to say that they are concerned for relatives that could be deported under DonOld. I think AOC is in touch with current viewpoints a lot more than the old guard. Besides the fact she is sharp as a tack!
I agree that in hearings AOC is usually devastatingly effective. As you say, not at all the firebrand she’s painted as, and let’s face it sometimes is. However we’re losing someone who is even better. Katie Porter has sliced and diced many an individual in hearings and I would have loved to see her doing the same in the Senate. But Adam Schiff proved himself to be as ruthless and to an extent sleazy as any GOPer in the way he took away Californian’s choice between him and Porter. Promoting the P.O.S. Steve Garvey enough to get him into the top two during the primary was a shitty thing for Schiff to do and while I’m sure we’ll see him make a Presidential run (as early as 2028) I’ll never full trust him again.
My point is that had Schiff made it clear to Porter how far he was willing to go and suggested full support to vault her into House leadership she might have stayed where she was. And gotten re-elected. Porter would be a star in the top (hopefully in two years we get the House back) or as ranking member of that Committee and being a lawyer (taught at Harvard by no less than Senator Warren!) perhaps on judiciary too. However unlike AOC would be a lightening rod and generate all sorts of funds flowing into the GOP Porter would have (I believe) given us everything AOC would without any of the baggage of PR fireworks.
In the end like you I just don’t see Connelly motivating OUR side, or frankly making inroads with voters we COULD get but aren’t connecting with. Most of our political laws have melted away but one that still seems to hold is that when given a choice between someone who is unapoligetically firm in their stance on all issues vs. someone who tries to water them down to appease voters the voters go for the “all-in” candidate. Why settle for ‘Lite’ when they know exactly what they are getting with the ‘all-in’ candidate even if they strongly disagree on a couple of issues? We’ve seen it over and over.
This isn’t a done deal, yet. As the imbedded tweet notes, the full Democratic caucus gets a vote. So far, the Steering Committee has made their recommendations and the caucus either goes along or not. AOC has said that she believes she has the votes in the caucus, so we will see if she can count votes better than Pelosi.
I just Googled and the Dem caucus voted for Connolly overwhelmingly. The Dems apparently have problems understanding the electorate. GOP lite does not win. Connolly is an OK guy, but he’s 74 and has cancer. Our gerontocracy has to wake up, smell the coffee and step aside for the next generation.
Spot on Jason. I’m a boomer (74 yrs old) and I’ve been saying for years that it’s time for the old guard to step aside and let the younger, hipper, dems take the lead. There are too many old geezers with old ideas and habits in the Senate and Congress. We’ve worn out the centrist stance – it’s definitely NOT working with millennials or anyone younger. Playing it safe is boring, regressive and unproductive. I will always honor and respect Pelosi as a brilliant strategist but she blew it on this one.
I agree with you 100% Jason. The Dems path to the future is not the ‘reach over the aisle’ bipartisan past.
American politics has become staggeringly right wing, the middle of politics is not ‘halfway’ between magas and the Dems, it is actually in the middle of the Democratic Party.
By world standards Biden and Obama were slightly right of center centrists, Trump et al are flaming facists, to the right over with Hitler, Mussolini, Pinochet, Franco, Mugabe and all the other despots.
AOC is NOT a far left radical, she is a slightly left centrist in the mould of Jacinda Adern, Justin Trudeau, Tony Blair or really anyone who’s been in power in much of the rest of the world since WW2. The policies she and the rest of the progressive Democrats are vastly popular and embraced and implemented in the rest of the developed world, and would build on Biden’s work in improving ordinary peoples lives at the literal necessary expense of billionaires. Policies like regulation of unethical business, free universal healthcare, workers and union rights, environment and consumer quality controls, and abortion availability are wildly popular, when polled and only disliked by the overly rich.
The problem is the framing of what are being pushed as ‘problems’ comes from the biased rightwing media (which is now nearly all of it), and unregulated ‘socialmedia’ with it’s opaque and biased algorithms.
All this has led to the ludicrous situation where a competent able candidate with an impressive record is passed over for President in favor of a proven inept convicted felon, racist, adjudicated rapist, and fraudster, famous for his bloviating stupidity and spectacularly awful managing abilities, who is poised to wreck the economy, society, and the country just because he can – and might profit personally from it.
The way forward is with Bernie and AOC, they embody what people want.
Yeah…that strategy proposed by the democrats worked for the GOP. After child separation and the promise of more; overturning ROE and clapping when women died; crapping on the military at every turn of the road; embracing dictatorship and fascism; 34 felonies, convicted as an adjudicated rapist with dozens of accounts; stealing national secrets, possibly selling some; crapping on working people and enriching himself and the billionaire class; eroding our democracy and trying many ways to undermine losing 2020, and incited a riot to stop the transfer of power; and many other stupid and cruel things too numerous to list, the GOP moved to the center to er…what? They didn’t? What center? I’m not sure. Apparently half the country are maniacs. They harbor no center but Trump. The nonvoters? Lost cause. Our group? Hopeless self deluded reasonable people who believe divine providence or reason will prevail. History says otherwise.
