Again, this is one of those moments that if a screenwriter did it, you would call it bad writing and you would be right. You can’t make this stuff up. Reality is indeed trumping fiction right and left, at least here in the Trump era where we find ourselves stuck. Again. Andrew Cuomo ran one of the worst campaigns for Mayor of New York City in history. And today it ended, not with a bang but with a click. Apparently Cuomo didn’t know that Donald Trump was in his corner — which doesn’t matter in reality since Trump isn’t a resident of New York any longer but I have to believe most politicians would find that a plus, particularly when running against a candidate who gets called a communist a lot. Not Cuomo. He muttered one word and ran when he heard that Trump endorsed him.

And thus ended the call, and thus ended the political race (to all intents and purposes, tomorrow is voting day) and thus ended Andrew Cuomo’s political life. Again. Who knows, Cuomo may end up being more like Trump, Oral Roberts, Richard Nixon (and don’t forget Dracula) than we know: he may come back for more.

Cuomo may resurrect for some future political contest. But if I were you, I wouldn’t hold my breath. And what a way to go out. The last “official” act that the candidate did was this inerview (perhaps) and trailing off into silence after hearing that you’re Donald Trump’s boy, or he’s yours, or both, was apparently too much for the former governor of the Empire State.

Mamdani is ahead in polls and very likely Cuomo will wash out. It will certainly be intriguing to see what kind of a vote he gets as an Independent. Many predictions are that Cuomo’s percentage of the vote will be embarrassingly low. Certainly the last minute Trump endorsement cannot be counted upon as any kind of a booster.

And for his own part, Trump will not be happy when he hears this at all. Trump is too in love wih his kingmaker persona and he doubtlessly thought that Cuomo would be thrilled o get his endorsement. In all events, I’m sure when Trump hears that Cuomo said, “No,” in essence denying the endorsement, denying Trump’s “magic” that some ketchup bottles will sprout wings.

It will be an interesting election day tomorrow. That much is certain. And one of the highlights, next to Proposition 50 in California, which may create five new House seats, will be the New York mayoral race.

  1. What’s funny is that Drumpf basically told voters that a vote for the actual GOP candidate (Curtis Sliwa of the “Guardian Angels” vigilante group) would basically be a vote for Mamdani.

I wonder how Sliwa felt about THAT diss?

    • Thanks for bringing that out — I hadn’t thought about it until now! Irony squared (iron upon irony to the second power), indeed!

I worked in the Fordham neighborhood in the Bronx in the 70s, when the code words “South Bronx” stood for the ultimate in urban decay. Curtis Sliwa was manager of a local McDonalds when he organized the Rock Patrol, a group of teenagers that adopted the task of helping tone down the violence, successful to the extent that local businesses sustained less damage and looting than other changing neighborhoods. The Rock Patrol gave way to the Guardian Angels, with their youthful teams wearing signature red berets visible on streets and in subway trains. Curtis’s celebrity status grew to local AM talk radio, and during that popularity ascent he revealed an increasingly conservative political stance.

His conservatism is disappointing, but he did some good in a place and at a time it was sorely needed.
