I can’t tell you how many influencers on Twitter/X have called and begged for this very thing for years now. Right-wing media pollutes social media with lies and the White House and Democrats simply have not come forward to counter the lies in real time — until now. The problem before was when Fox News, whomever, would spew the lies and there was no response, silence was deemed as acceptance or even guilt. But no more. Now there are two accounts which are committed to rapid fire response to the non stop barrage of bull$hit that characterizes our political discourse in the era of MAGA and Trump.
One Twitter/X account, Biden-Harris HQ, describes itself as “the official digital rapid response channel of the Biden-Harris campaign,” and it’s hooked up with DNC War Room, another account whose purpose is the same. (And these accounts have an analogue on Threads, in anticipation of that not-impossible day when Musk manages to run his X monster totally into the ground.) Here’s a jewel worth noting. I hope and pray that this ends up in a campaign ad.

This also needs to appear in attack ads, and it needs to be clear that these are REPUBLICANS saying this. These two, Charlie Sykes and Robert Gates, are Never Trump Republicans. This is the schism in the party right here. The sane Republicans, the ones who used to be in the party of conservatism, see the GOP under Trump for what it has become and they see him for who he is.
2024 is going to be an election year unlike any. We have two spoiler campaigns running. Dean Phillips just put on a suicide vest and he’s doing what he can to upset the apple cart. His attacks on Joe Biden will be repurposed into attack ads by the Trump campaign, make no mistake about that. Phillips is doing the Devil’s work and none other than Steve Schmidt, the man who boosted Sarah Palin into the national spotlight and laid the foundation for MAGA and Trump, is managing his campaign.
Then there’s No Labels, a dark money franchise which is committed to giving lip service to “choice” — as is Dean Phillips. That’s Steve Schmidt’s rationale right now, “choice” — and in fact the purpose of No Labels is to peel votes away from Biden so that Trump can squeak back in.
And the fact remains, we don’t know at this moment, on the last day of October, 2023, whether Trump will actually even be on the ballot or if he will be sentenced in one of his criminal trials. And if he is sentenced, would Joe Biden pardon him? That would be something, a sitting president, running for reelection, pardoning the frontrunning GOP candidate. Wow. I don’t know if we’re going to get there, but that’s so Bizarro World, I’m having trouble imagining it, even. But it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
But consider this: IF we get to such a bizarre juncture in our politics, the only way to go is to have massive ads and commentary explaining the actual law to people and that this isn’t a “witch hunt,” that Donald Trump is actually a criminal and has been his entire life. He just finally got caught.
Make no mistake: not only is democracy v. fascism on the ballot next November, but truth v. lies is. It is that black and white.
If Biden pardons Trump, that would prove to me that Biden is unqualified to be president.
President Biden has kept such a hands-off profile with respect to former guy’s legal problems, I would be shocked out of the remaining years of my life if he even gave one thought to pardoning him let alone doing the actual deed.
I totally agree with Spike and Michael, Trump absolutely deserves to spend the rest of his miserable life in jail, mind you it might improve his diet. He has wrought such damage to the American judicial system with his lies, not to mention the carnage he’s inflicted on the electoral system. The problem is that his fanatical low life followers could well rise up with violence. Pardoning his sorry ass with the signed agreement that he never run for public office outside of Russia again would, I believe, take the wind out of those particular sails.
David, do you really believe he’d keep such a promise? His signature and his word are less than meaningless.
No, the country can not be held hostage to the threat posed by his supporters.
If Trump gets pardoned, it would be sending a loud message to future politicians of his stripe that they will have a free ride to repeat and exceed all the things Trump is charged with doing.
