This is surreal. The paradigm has totally inverted since the 60’s. You well recall how Jack and Bobby Kennedy were supposedly having an affair with Marilyn Monroe and how their sister Pat was married to Peter Lawford and all was reportedly wildness and orgies amongst the Democrats, but the Republicans were staid and sober. 180 degree pivot.

Olivia Beavers is a reporter for Politico assigned to Congress. I assume that she, or someone with her, took the picture. The blow up does indeed look like Cawthorn has been crying. This is very bizarre. This is one of those rare occasions when I find myself stunned. Would Kevin McCarthy seriously have punched members of his caucus? Is that possible?

Is it possible McCarthy actually punched Cawthorn? Not saying I would blame him, I am only saying that if things have degenerated to that level, then we have hit yet another sub-basement of political life.

Stone says "DC elites"… That's not what Cawthorn alleged. Cawthorn said GOP members. I don't think McCarthy cares if some DC heiress is snorting coke in a gilded hot tub; he just wanted a statement from little grasshopper that it wasn't a member of his party.

I merely point out to you that today the Washington Post published a story on the preparation for the rally and the circle of defendants is expanding. The Post reports that this investigation “already involves more defendants than any other criminal prosecution in the nation’s history.” I don’t know if this bat guano with Cawthorn is intended to distract from the real world events going on in D.C. or if in fact this is all exactly what it appears to be on its face and Cawthorn is simply oblivious to the fact that he’s making a terrible situation worse still.
Maybe McCarthy did haul off and belt him. Physical violence is never an answer. I think we got that cultural message a few nights ago from Will Smith. I’m saying two things, that 1) It might be the only thing that would get through to Cawthorn (if McCarthy did it) and 2) If it indeed did happen, then things are much worse than we thought.
Could that be where we are? Flying fists in the Minority Leader’s office? Wow.

I am so stunned by the photos and by the allegations. Cawthorn is waaay out over his skis. He’s too stupid to know how out of line he is. Cawthorn is such a child that if McCarthy did punch him, things could get very out of control. I don’t know. Maybe McCarthy only scolded Cawthorn and maybe Scalise coincidentally had a black eye. Things are so nuts in D.C. nowadays it’s hard to ever know what is going on.
Looks like a black eye to me but in my experience what you see doesn’t show up in a half hour. Not that McCarthy (or Scalise for that matter) would be above punching a guy in a wheelchair but I’m guessing Maddy probably got punched in his nasty face the night before. HE certainly is enough of an asshole to piss off lots of people and since he hangs out with MAGA goobers maybe seeing Will Smith get away with it made someone decide that being white they should be able to get away with it too!
I don’t know about the punching. In an earlier draft of this piece I said I would “respect” McCarthy for doing that, and then I edited it, because while, yes, a-hole Cawthorn would deserve being punched if anybody would, the fact is that men hitting other men in the face is primitive behavior. If that’s where we are, then we are screwed. I think that was the message of Will Smith’s debacle the other night. Yes, on a level it is understandable, but when you feel that way, you have to stop and find another way to cope. To get to the level of fists is just becoming an animal. I see that with clarity now — although, again, if anybody would “deserve” such behavior, it would be Cawthorn. When he made his crack about Zelenskyy being a “thug” I would have wanted to hit him in the face, too, if I had been in the same room.
Little maddie might have punched himself just for the optics. I really don’t think McCarthy is that stupid. Why? Because not only does it give that punk little maddie an opportunity to get McCarthy arrested and likely sued, it also looks very bad to commit violence on someone in a wheelchair. That is not a good look for most people. It’s one thing for an idiot like the shit-gibbon to make fun of the handicapped but a whole ‘nother one to actually hit someone confined to a wheelchair. Besides, why in the fuck would he? It doesn’t even make stupid sense. In any verbal confrontation all McCarthy has to do is grab the wheelchair and wheel little maddie out of any room he’s in. Problem solved.
