Nothing like a dose of reality to wake somebody the phuque up. I was totally expecting this — had predicted it — but way down the road. But it looks like reality bites sooner, rather than later. The article that you’re about to read makes reference to an actual conversation that an employer had to have with his employees about why their Christmas bonuses would be eliminated (as predicted in a story we published here last night. You don’t need imagination to see the obvious.)
In any event, this scenario played out with a small manufacturer in Pennsylvania and the people were devastated. And this is going on all over the country. And to be perfectly honest? I thought about having the same conversation with the writers here at PZ. Not because we import a product or have an issue with tariffs. But because the night of the election and for days afterward the traffic was so godawful that I feared we would go out of business. I share this with you so that you can know that Trump’s election is already sending economic shockwaves throughout this country on every level and it hasn’t even been one week since Election Day. Meidas Touch:
The economic realities of tariffs are quickly setting in for small business owners, many of whom are directly affected. Meiselas shared the story of a Pennsylvania small manufacturing company whose employees learned that their holiday bonuses would be cut to prepare for the financial strain anticipated from increased import costs. The company’s president reportedly had to explain to workers what tariffs are and how they function, revealing a widespread misunderstanding of the economic policy

For larger companies, the impact of tariffs is no less stark. Automotive companies like Nissan and Stellantis are already bracing for cost increases and have announced impending layoffs to mitigate anticipated losses. CNN recently highlighted that the prices of common goods are expected to rise as companies pass along the cost of tariffs to consumers. Leaders from major U.S. corporations, including AutoZone, have confirmed that price increases are on the way, with some anticipating hikes as early as next year.

All I can say is that Liz Cheney told them, all of the generals told them, Mike Pence told them, the White House staffers told them, everybody told them. They didn’t want to believe. Now it’s FAFO time and they’re going to Find Out. If you want to listen to Brett Meiselas talk about this, here’s the link. But you’ve gotten the gist of it by reading the article here.
In the hours surrounding the election, searches for terms like “change my vote” and “are tariffs bad” surged, particularly in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. Meiselas pointed to these searches as an indicator of the swift realization among voters about the potential consequences of Trump’s trade policies.
Unbelieveable. But some people can only learn by hardship. I have seen this in my life countless times. You can advise somebody to use reliable birth control, you can advise them to get health checkups, not to believe that COVID is fake news, you can tell them the truth about any number of subjects under the sun. But it isn’t until they’re pregnant or lying in the hospital, with a tumor having been found, that they become teachable. I guess that same quirk of human nature is what we’re about to see exposed.
You’re going to reap what you sowed MAGA. And you’re not going to like it.

So Effing TRUE Ursula! I have yeast in the freezer and think I will stock pile some bread flour and all-purpose flour too, I have plenty of legumes in storage too 🙂 I do love to cook! Time to get a sourdough starter going!
I also have dried beans and things. I may stop eating out for a while and just cook at home and save money. This is going to get seriously nuts.
I already cook a lot at home, due to dietary restrictions. I also have a recipe for making sanitizing wipes after the early days of the pandemic, when you couldn’t buy them. I’ve been mending my socks for years, just because I hate wasting things.
The magats are sure stoopid! Everyone warned them. My own maga mother says I’m a fool to believe the bs about tariffs. Because everyone voted for Orange tyrant for the sake of the country she told me. You all realize that the Biden Administration will be blamed for all the price increases, right!?! No matter what we all tell them, they are the three monkeys with a twist: see no truth, hear no truth, speak no truth. Yup, time to buy whatever we can store up. It’s going to be a tough time for the long term future!
I don’t think they can blame Biden when the shit starts to hit the fan on Trump’s watch. And keeps hitting the fan. Reality is going to bite and it’s going to keep biting for four years.
Oh, “they” will find any scapegoat to avoid blaming Trump. During the sub-prime mortgage meltdown in 2008, long before the current MAGA madness, Fox News blamed just about everyone but the Bush administration. And Fox was a big cheerleader for the the Iraq invasion before they turned against it, when Trump came to power.
The Leopard Eating Faces Party continues eating faces.
Ursula – I had NO idea things were getting that bad for you! Unfortunately, I have been unemployed for 16 months, which doesn’t even cover all my bills. Thank heavens my husband makes decent money or I don’t know where we would be right now. I am applying nearly every damn day and all I get is crickets. Loud ones.
But on to a different subject – we have cut back on so much there’s barely anything left. Our “eating out” is McDonalds maybe once a month, or occasionally pizza from this Really Good Place across the streets. We are also looking at the pantry and stocking up. I need to go through and clean it up so we have a better idea of what we *have* so we know what we *need*. Fortunately rice is cheap and butter isn’t horrible yet. Oh, and pasta is cheap. We both like those.
I absolutely adore your site and most columns (I wanted to say that again). It brings back some good memories of when I used to write, it’s funny and serious by turns and makes me think 98% of the time. I came across you by accident and I have notifications set up for when new columns are posted. This is the best thing I’ve found online for a long, long time. I was really worried when columns were slow in coming out after the election! So I can at least support you by reading. (They give you folks some horrible ads, ick.) OH, and thanks to all of you for the angry and “we need to do this NOW” and constructive actions we can take. I’m still numb about the election, bit I have saved the “action” columns, so every so often I go back and read them so I don’t get into depression as far.
Keep the faith!!!!!!!!!
yes, sorry Ursula, I was so despondent in the immediate aftermath, I didn’t see much point in reading about it, as e.g. there’d be no exciting updates about the law catching up with him 😕
I suspect there are two categories about the tariffs: those making enough money that they care about tax cuts which will benefit them and so.don’t care that everyone else will get fed over, and those who won’t believe the truth about tariffs even if they read about, until.it affects them .
