Well, this lays actions out in order. Someone spoke up, someone respected, and gave us why Blanche should *not* be the new AG. Here’s hoping it’s not too little too late and Blanche gets the pass. Or are Republicans still too much under Grump’s … er, Trump’s thumb? We had been advised that some Republicans had thrown off the boat anchor that is Trump and gotten themselves back? Time will tell, and again, and again. With respect to Raw Story:
Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee were put on notice on Friday by a highly respected conservative that even the thought of appointing acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to the post should make them sick. Washington Post columnist George Will argued Friday that Republicans owe no favors to President Donald Trump as he tries to foist his compromised former personal lawyer on the country.
“There are many sufficient reasons to oppose confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general,” wrote Will. “Presidents generally are owed some deference in selecting Cabinet members, but ‘some’ implies limits, lest the Senate’s advice-and-consent duty be drained of responsibility. And not all presidents are equally owed. Today’s president is owed little, given his contempt for the unwritten rules of civility that can lubricate a congenial society’s governance.”
Yowza! SCORCH! Oh my stars and garters, that was *brutal* and we’re just getting started! There is a great deal of admiration for when he is discussing Trump without saying his name. That was beautiful. The question coming out of that would possibly be *can* the Senate, the House, hell, make it so Congress Republicans get their souls back after Trump has stomped on them for so long? Hmmmm, there are a couple of Republicans that I’m not sure have souls. Lauren Boebert, Nancy Mace (ick!), Mike Johnson certainly doesn’t have his left, Jim Jordan …. Well, at least there are some Republicans who are decent. Not many, but some.
Having dismissed the president, Will set about making his case against Blanche by citing multiple Trump appointees who were passed through the divided Senate only to be found lacking in all ways for their jobs. Will first called out former Attorney General Pam Bondi — ousted over her handling of the Epstein files — and a slew of others, as incompetents. “If at most four Republican senators had, in committee or floor votes, behaved as independently as the Founders thought senators would,” Will wrote, “Bondi, Kristi Noem, Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and others would not have been confirmed to offices far above their competences.”
Yea, heh, that would have been novel. Too bad it didn’t work out that way. Trump doesn’t give a damn if the person can do the job. He wants someone who looks good and can at least fake their way through a position. Unfortunately for us, we knew the people were going to be trouble just from the way they started, and that we were screwed. And they have proven it, especially RFK Jr and NotADoctor Oz. Trump is going to keep firing people and bringing new people in, except then he’ll fire them again and so on. Maybe if the Senate had pushed back, we wouldn’t be in this (take your war and go to hell, Hegseth) mess. Too little too late. We can’t be certain anyone will see it. But it’s good information.
Then he honed in on Blanche. “Blanche was acting attorney general when the Justice Department took seriously Seashellgate,” he wrote. [SeashallGate. Ahahahaha.] “Blanche, who serves at the pleasure of the president, signed a memo pledging that the IRS is ‘Forever Barred’ from ‘examinations’ of Trump, certain members of his family, the Trump Organization and ‘related or affiliated individuals.’ This ‘negotiated’ — try not to snicker — settlement between the president and the executive branch he heads exemplifies the administration’s sludge of self-dealing.”
Noting that Blanche received an “embarrassingly backhanded endorsement” from former attorney general William Barr who claimed Trump’s latest appointee “will run the department as effectively as anyone could under President Trump,” W0ill asked, “Is this sufficient reassurance for Republican senators? Or will, at last, a nominee trigger their gag reflexes?”
Ahahahaha. Gag reflexes. Ahahahaha. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait and see what happens, as the hearings have already started. Being as my household doesn’t think to watch such things, well, oops. I guess I’m not a very good politics writer after all. Ah, well, I still enjoy doing what I do. And if you folks enjoy what I write, maybe I’m not so terrible after all.

While I loathe George Will as a person in terms of politics (he can be an interesting read when it comes to matters of linguistics and sports; I rather like the former subject but have little interest in the latter), I *do* respect him for his political ideals.

Thanks to the actions of the far right radicals going back to the time of Raygun, and their attempts at taking power at all and any costs, it’s been a long while since US politics could be described as “a congenial society”.
Now that the right wing nutjobs can see they’re on a losing side, they want us to be ‘congenial’ to them?
Well it’s too late for that. Far too much bloodstained water has flowed under too many bridges for ‘congeniality’ and ‘bipartisanship’ to appear again.
It’s long past time for them to take the consequences of their actions – and that includes not being ‘surprised’ at any lack of ‘congeniality’ or ‘niceness’ from our side.
Even if it does f**k their feelings. They started it, we’ll finish them.
