The George Santos saga is about to ratchet up yet another several notches, as federal prosecutors contemplate whether to file criminal charges against him. Plus, the congressman-elect hasn’t even been sworn in, but it’s already been requested that the House Ethics Committee get involved in his case.
The New York Post offers a good thumbnail sketch of how a customer service rep at Dish invented himself as an up and coming securities magnate and then went on to get elected to Congress.
Santos confessed he had “never worked directly” for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, chalking that fib up to a “poor choice of words.”
The 34-year-old now claims instead that a company called Link Bridge, where he worked as a vice president, did business with both of the financial giants. […]
He also admitted that he never graduated from any college, despite previously claiming to have received a degree from Baruch in 2010.
“I didn’t graduate from any institution of higher learning. I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume,” he said. “I own up to that … We do stupid things in life.”
Santos, elected to Congress on Nov. 8 to represent the Long Island- and Queens-based 3rd District, was also accused of lying about his family history, saying on his campaign website that his mother was Jewish and his grandparents escaped the Nazis during World War II.
Santos now says that he’s “clearly Catholic,” but claimed his grandmother told stories about being Jewish and later converting to Catholicism.
“I never claimed to be Jewish,” Santos said. “I am Catholic. Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish.’”
At this point you’re probably asking, “Is there an echo in the room?” And well you should be. Yes, this sounds exactly like our last wunderkind GOP candidate, Herschel Walker. Walker also lied about academic and business achievements that he never had. He also had a shady personal life.
Another fact that has been unearthed is that Santos was married to a woman between 2012 and 2019. He claims now to be a “happily married gay man,” but even that is being disputed. The New York Times says, “Mr. Santos has referred to his husband only by his first name, Matt, and it is unclear when they married. Piauí, a Brazilian magazine, interviewed Mr. Santos in November 2020 and named him as Matheus Gerard.” Interesting how the wife of seven years disappeared and the gay husband appeared when he started running for Congress.
Santos might have been living with a gay boyfriend when he was married to his wife. Or, maybe he’s a polygamist. Maybe he was still married to his wife and married his current husband. If you hit the link to the Times, you’ll see this.
Peter Hamilton met Mr. Santos near the start of 2014, he said. He recalled how Mr. Santos, who claimed to be an N.Y.U. graduate, had not recognized the name of the business school he said he had attended. Nonetheless, Mr. Hamilton found him charismatic and intelligent. “He seems to know what to say, and how to say it to people,” Mr. Hamilton recalled in an interview.
He did not hesitate when Mr. Santos said that he needed to borrow several thousand dollars to move in with his boyfriend, and lent him the money in September 2014, court documents show. Not long afterward, Mr. Hamilton said, Mr. Santos stopped responding to his texts and calls.
Mr. Hamilton filed a case in small claims court in Queens to seek repayment in 2015. In October of that year, Mr. Santos responded, saying that the money had been repaid and that it was not a loan but a favor. A judge agreed with Mr. Hamilton, however, and issued a judgment of $5,000 plus interest.
“Not a loan, but a favor.” I have always considered any personal loan made to me by a friend as a favor, too, but I also pay back the money.
Simply, Santos is a fraud. He’s lied about everything, created an identity for himself. And while that is tragic, the true tragedy is that the GOP doesn’t care. To them, this is a joke, plain and simple. If you go back to the Post article,
Senior House Republicans were apparently aware of the inaccuracies and embellishments in the member-elect’s resume, and the topic became a “running joke,” multiple insiders close to House GOP leadership told The Post over the weekend.
“As far as questions about George in general, that was always something that was brought up whenever we talked about this race,” said one senior GOP leadership aide. “It was a running joke at a certain point. This is the second time he’s run and these issues we assumed would be worked out by the voters.”
Nothing got worked out by voters. The lie continued. The GOP knew who and what Santos was, just like they knew who and what Herschel Walker was, and They.Don’t.Care. The only thing they care about is capturing a seat, hell or high water, come what may. Nothing else matters. So they will continue to support the very worst candidates out there, if they think that there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that the person can win.
The GOP is in the business of duping and defrauding voters. There’s going to be more of this. This is the new normal, where they are concerned.
But — and this is big — last week Nassau County Legislator Josh Lafazan says he submitted a letter to the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York requesting a federal investigation into Santos’ finances and campaign activity. Lafazan also called for Santos to resign and as of today, Santos has refused to resign. He merely admitted that he had told some lies. And of course he wouldn’t have done that, except he was cornered and he had to say something.
This is the GOP. Lawbreakers being put on the ticket to be lawmakers. There’s no way democracy can survive with this going on.

That’s 100% right. I want to know if he’s a citizen and how he can live in one state and run for office in another.
Also how he got all that money to loan $700K to his campaign, when he couldn’t pay rent or bills only a year before.

There is too much unknown about Mr. Santos. I wish someone would spill the beans like the border patrol or his ex-wife.
I agree Ursula but I indict the goddamn voters who seem to not care. After all this was found out there’s been no demand for him to step down. There should be outrage but unfortunately groups stick together, like the Jewish organizations that endorsed him on long Island, which has a large Jewish community of wealthy individuals. They could and should do more. They won’t. They feign outrage by saying you cant come to our meetings. Big fucking deal. He wasnt going anyway. The gay community should also be pissed about this poser. They catch enough shit without an asshole like this. Unfortunately it seems in America the truth matters little anymore. The gop is a lost cause. I catch shit on this forum all the time for ‘ranting’ about the system and history of this so called democratic Republic. I wonder if the Vietnam War would have ended, gotten a president evicted, or had the civil rights legislation passed in the 60s if people hadn’t stood up and ‘ranted’ about the system? I know the answer. Not a goddamn thing would have happened. I notice a lot comes from people who’ve never been seriously stepped on unfairly by the ‘system’? It reminds me of the white churches that criticized the black church goers in the streets by repeatedly saying be nice. Be patient. It’s the best we got. You get what you tolerate. Evidently a lying asshole can invent a persona to tell people what they want to hear and it’s perfectly OK in America. Give him the power to make laws. Perfect. Cue up the excuses.
This isn’t a group of voters like the asshats that re-elect the likes of MTG, Bobblehead, Gosar and others. Those voters know full well the assclowns they are sending to Congress and do it anyway. What infuriates me is journalists in that District didn’t seem to pick up on any of Santos’ bullshit inflation of his so-called credentials. And where the FUCK was the DCCC (never mind – they were sending out fifty goddamned ALL IS LOST! – unless you send money now – fundraising emails a day) or at least the NY state and local Democratic Party? Even modest oppo research should have uncovered much if not all of this and then we wouldn’t have a Congressman-Elect Santos.
If the voters aren’t properly informed which seems to be the case here I’m willing to cut them some slack.
That is the real problem, that the Democratic Party couldn’t come up with a stronger candidate in what is a historically Dem area. The poor performance of senior Democrats running the local party needs to be addressed pronto.
He may have actually told a truth while intending to lie. For Jews, being Jewish by birth is determined by one’s mother. If his mother’s mother was Jewish, then his mother can claim to be a Jew. And if that’s the case, then so can he.
What a tangled web we weave indeed.
You’re right and he should wear it proudly. I have a Hebrew name on a fancy paper when I joined the reform temple in 1979. My first wife’s family ancestors fled Russia. They lived in Springfield MA. I’ve never really practiced although I went to ceremonies and was married in the temple. They were the nicest, most generous and tolerant people anyone could know. I would never claim I’m a part of the Jewish community although I’ve studied their history with scholars. Jesus was a Jew as it is well documented in the gospels. He went to temple. He was called rabbi. I’ve also lost close Jewish friends who were zionists and won’t accept the state of Israel has done anything wrong to the Palestinians. The state of Israel has done plenty of evil as all governments do. I love my country. I served in the military. Any good citizen shouldn’t hide behind platitudes and admit when things are wrong. When people want simplicity concerning the mystery of faith and used to ask me my religious affliation, I replied I’m a methodist Taoist jew. On your dogtags they print your name, ss#, blood type and religious affliation. For that mine said: no preference. I would bet he’s never attended any temple. Do they have one for liars?
Interesting history – but I take the opposite view in a casual way. I’m 82 now & only a few years ago when my father was in his late 80’s did he tell us 4 ‘kids’ that our mother was Jewish ! She was Swiss & had hidden her history during the war years because she got flack from Londoners with her ‘German’ accent. In fact looking at my father’s side I realized they were a Jewish family also. My father thought we would be furious about this revelation, whereas we all laughed & wanted to know more ~! I have been sleuthing on the subject ever since, and enjoy reading up on all things Jewish. My own kids took the info as something to be clearly proud of so my parent’s fears were groundless. “Oh wow – very interesting” was everybody’s reaction & immediately told everyone they knew. At the same time I have zero interest in ‘joining’ anything since I am not religious apart from a deep wish that the story of the man Jesus Christ is truth – such a beautiful story !
one thing for certain, GOP will not ask him to resign. the margin is so close they won’t want to give up a single vote. as long as he votes with McCarthy he is safe.
Given Walker and Santos you would think the GOP would embrace AI wholeheartedly. Who even needs a human anymore?
