The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has undermined Donald Trump’s midterm plan after saying there is no need to deploy agents for the election. The president’s former advisor, Steve Bannon, had previously suggested ICE agents should be manning polling booth centers. He said last week, “You’re damn right we’re gonna have ICE surround the polls come November.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt did not rule out ICE’s presence in the midterms. She said, “I can’t guarantee that an ICE agent won’t be around a polling location in November … but what I can tell you is I haven’t heard the president discuss any formal plans to put ICE outside of polling locations.”
Ah, yes, KKKaroline and her practiced doublespeak. Say something without saying anything. People should learn from her, since she does it so well. Think of how many people in the ‘cabinet’ have blurted out something they shouldn’t have. And allow me to mention what a nasty piece of work Bannon is. He makes a good couple with Stephen Miller. Speaking with progressive podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Democratic Party election attorney Marc Elias analyzed what ICE head Todd Lyons’s statement would mean for Trump and the upcoming midterm elections. “Obviously, we do civil enforcement and criminal law enforcement,” Lyons told the Senate Homeland Security Committee last week. “There’s no reason for us to deploy to a polling station.” Elias, who specializes in voting rights, said, “He gave up the game, and then he stammered and stammered and stammered when asked what would happen if Donald Trump called to deploy ICE at the polls.
H0 h0 h0. Oops. Everyone is going to look bad over this. Lyons said ICE shouldn’t be at the polls, but Trump might want them there, so no one knows what will actually happen. Either way, someone is going to look Very Bad. There’s no good way to come out of this. *Someone* is going to get the short end of the stick, and it’s going to hurt, somehow, some way.
“There may be no reason, there may be no good reason, there may be no lawful reason, but that doesn’t mean Donald Trump won’t insist to Kristi Noem that it won’t happen anyway.” “Is it legal? No. It would be totally illegal. But honestly, look at the images we have seen ICE do. They’re breaking all kinds of laws; they’re breaking laws every single day. “What, though, is going to stop this is not some law in a book on a dusty shelf, but it’s going to stop because you and I are gonna call it out, everyone watching this is going to take this seriously.”
Oh hell YES we’re taking it seriously. What ICE has been doing is constantly being splashed across the news. It might finally have made the people of America horrified to see what’s been happening. It’s not Trump being Trump anymore. It’s someone’s neighbor being assaulted. It‘s someone’s neighbor being killed. It’s someone being abused, and it could be anyone. Even citizens are getting caught in the streets, in the schools, in no-knock home invasions. It’s not somewhere else anymore. It’s here, everywhere. They didn’t expect resistance. Well, we’re resisting in spades. It’s everyone of all ages and all nationalities. We *need* to flip Congress, all of it. We do what we can now, and once we turn it over, there will be hell to pay. Every Democratic governor needs to nip this in the bud at once by issuing a PROMISE (not a “threat”) that ANY ICE agent found around ANY polling place will be immediately arrested for criminal trespass and harassment as elections are under the SOLE jurisdiction of each state. And, thanks to so many recent Supreme Court rulings which have reduced FEDERAL LEGAL OVERSIGHT of voting rights, there’s no legal justification for Drumpf to even be thinking of doing this.
Unfortunately it’s not just about legal. It’s about what Trump wants. He’s done all these illegal things (grifts, as a start) and he feels he has SCOTUS in his pocket so he doesn’t worry and doesn’t care.
