Yet another tone deaf cabinet member has stepped into the spotlight, and not in a good way, either. This person’s worth is more than enough to be comfortable. And a person in the US can get a meal for, yes, three dollars$$. Or so this person thinks. Excuse us? With thanks to Raw Story:

One of President Donald Trump’s most “out of touch” Cabinet secretaries floated a new affordable meal idea on Wednesday for families who are struggling with the cost of groceries. For just $3, Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on Fox Business that a person can buy “a piece of chicken, a piece of broccoli, a corn tortilla, and one other thing.” She said the USDA came up with the meal plan after running “more than 1,000 simulations.”

Hello? What planet are you living on, woman? Three dollars. That doesn’t cover much of anything. Rice, maybe. A gallon of milk costs more than three dollars. It’s stunning that someone could be that ill-informed. It could be that her money means *she* doesn’t have to worry about grocery costs, and that says nothing about the families struggling across America. *They* have to worry, and she does not understand that.

Rollins, who Forbes estimated has a net worth of around $15 million, made the comments at a time when grocery prices continue to climb. According to the latest inflation report, food costs were up 3.1% year-over-year in December 2025, with prices for staples like fish, poultry, and eggs rising by 3.9%. Rollins’ comments attracted mockery online.

Saving the best for last, okay? See those statistics? Maybe she should focus on the numbers rather than her imagination. It’s not hard to find them. She doesn’t even need a computer because she can search on her phone (probably a top-of-the-line iPhone). But that would mean she’d actually have to *work* for a few minutes. Can’t have that, no, no, we can’t!

“Wow,” the Anonymous hacking group posted on X. //// “They hate so much of America. They just hate them,” Fred Wellman, a Democratic candidate for office in Missouri, posted on X. //// “RFK Jr is telling everyone to eat steak. People dragged him because they can’t afford steak. So Rollins rolls out an amazing $3 meal deal,” Ron Filipkowski, editor in chief of MeidasTouch, posted on X.

How about you run one simulation where you survive on $10/day for food, Brooke Rollins?” Andrew Lawrence, deputy director of rapid response at Media Matters, posted on Bluesky. //// “Bruh, you can’t even get a McDouble for $3 these days,” journalist Nick Calandra posted on Bluesky.

WHAM. Blindsided by snark. Of course, she might not pay attention to any of the comments, but we would expect her to have seen at least one. At least. Heh, and Trump’s cabinet wonders why they don’t get any respect. Well, when they come down to our level, maybe they will. But in the meantime, tone deaf is the phrase for all of them. See you soon!

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. Okay, the PIECE of chicken makes some sense but it’s going to depend on what part of the chicken is being eaten. A single chicken wing is NOT going to be as filling as a drumstick or thigh, and certainly nowhere as filling as a chicken breast.

But *A* piece of broccoli? Is that supposed to be just a floret or just a stalk or a whole stalk with floret attached? And *A* corn tortilla? She does know that tortillas come in many sizes, right? You’ve got small ones (4-5″) suitable for street tacos, medium ones (6-8″) used for most standard tacos and fajitas and large one (10-12″) used for things like burritos and substantial wraps. (Some manufacturers make even larger ones suitable for pizzas.) Also, the corn tortillas tend to be used for smaller foods while flour tortillas are used for larger things (but you can pretty much find corn and flour tortillas of any size).

But, I do agree with Andrew Lawrence’s comment about Rollins trying to subsist (or survive) on three $3 meals a day. Make the CHARLIE-UNIFORM-NOVEMBER-TANGO do it for a week. Under strictly monitored conditions. And ANYTHING she spent in excess of that $9 a day would lead to a fine of $10,000 per $1 paid in excess of the $9 limit.
