Mary Peltola will become the first indigenous Alaskan to serve in Congress after defeating Sarah Palin in the special election to fill the seat of long time Rep. Republican Don Young who held it from 1973 until his death earlier this year.
While this is absolutely a good harbinger for Democratic success in November, Peltola will have to face off against Palin in November to win a full term, and we certainly wish her the best!
“Democrat Mary Peltola on Wednesday won the special election to represent Alaska’s lone U.S. House seat, per the Alaska Division of Elections.
Why it matters: Peltola’s victory is a major upset in a state that voted for former President Trump by 10 points in 2020, and it makes her the first Native Alaskan elected to Congress.
Peltola will also be the first Democrat to represent the seat in nearly half a century. Republican Don Young held it from 1973 until his death in March.
She defeated Republican Sarah Palin, the former governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee who had Trump’s endorsement.”
There are a lot of happy folk over at Twitter:
I'm so happy she's indigenous.
Beating a Kkkonservative.

Right on, HopiMex!
It’s about time a Native American represented Alaska! It only took 65 years or so…

Thanks to Mary Peltola for giving us a lift on this day of otherwise troubling news!
Go get Palin in November!

😀
Congrats Pro-Choice Mary Peltola !
😀
Uh oh spagettio!!! Duck! There goes a dinner plate.
lol
It’s doubtful ANYONE is going to change their mind in two months. And the aging, screechy Barbie doll who lost is unlikely to get any divine intervention to help her out here.
wow- just wow, congrats! This is a big win for all of Alaska. I think mcturtle and company just constipated on the house as well as the senate.
Like Tracy in one of the tweets above, I’ve always thought Palid Palin looks like she’s made of rubber or wax, not flesh. Her brain is as rubbery as her skin.
What Democrats’ Win In Alaska Tells Us About November
For the second time in as many weeks, Democrats have won a competitive special election. And by the numbers, this win was even more impressive than last week’s victory in New York’s 19th District.
Phenomenal win! One thing tho’: Ms. Petola is the first Native Alaskan to go to congress? What on earth? Why did it take so long?
Still, WTG Ms. Petola. Hopefully electing Native Alaskans to high office is an ongoing trend in our 49th.
While Alaska was purchased from Russia (the whole “Seward’s folly” thing – 7.2 million was quite a sum at the time and it WAS way the fuck up away from the rest of the states & territories we now think of as the continental 48) in 1867 it only became a state in January, 1959. So when you consider a couple of things it’s not so crazy. As a state, Alaska hasn’t even reached senior citizen age. Then there’s Don Young having served as their Representative for so long. He was elected in 1970 and Congress Critters getting re-elected over and over again is hardly new, or unique to Alaska. The ironically named Young simply wouldn’t retire and apparently even Native Alaskans were okay enough with him not to mount a challenge. Or didn’t think it would have a snowball’s chance in hell. Fifty fucking years the guy served and he had to be carried out in a coffin or he’d still be there!
Given all that is it so surprising that Alaska now has its first Native Alaskan in Congress?
