You well recall that Hillary Clinton spoke of the “vast right-wing conspiracy” that had trashed her for over twenty years. She was right. And they haven’t stopped, they’ve merely shifted tactics. Michael Flynn has been advocating dissent at the local level, starting with school boards, for some time. This is not a new tactic. Franklin Graham realized the wisdom of this strategy some years ago. And it is a good strategy. If you start on the local, grassroots level and you control the next generation of voters, what they study, what they read, who teaches them, etc., you’ve got a lot of power.

Take a look at some of what is going on at the grass roots level. This is sobering. We tend to ignore some of these smaller races because we’re all focused on the big ticket political items, but that is not a wise posture to take, because take a look at what’s going on.

The man is loud, belligerent and stupid, which is what is passing for “patriotic” these days. If you listened carefully, at the very end they cut his mic because he doesn’t need it. He’s not presenting a case, he’s doing a beat down, big difference.

And here’s a similar scene from the Charleston, SC City Council meeting. Same thing, forget about advocating a position, just get up and do a screaming meltdown. This is some scary stuff. A doctor was spit on and called names.

Here is another example, Mellisa Moron Carone. She’s reciting talking points she was given. I’m sure she never heard of “critical thinking skills” before and God knows she has none of her own.

Now if you go through just these clips, you see the central themes: 1. COVID is the bogey man, which it is, but the right-wing spin is that it’s a hoax, a means of controlling peoples’ lives, etc. and people are beyond outraged at this intrusion. They’re apoplectic to the point of being near a stroke or a nervous breakdown. 2. The Big Lie is woven into the COVID narrative and the odd ball thing about that is that it’s a global pandemic. It wasn’t “brought” here to interfere with the election, but that piece of information seems to be lost in translation.

It’s no new information that the malcontents in this culture have seen the pandemic and the Big Lie as a rallying call to validate their worst behavior. If we need a poster child for this premise, this guy will do. In the comments under this tweet, a San Diego woman said she was this guy’s barista and she hopes he gets some help.

It’s amazing that a global pandemic has been politicized but it has. And these local folks have all lost sight of the fact that people are dying not only here but in England, France, India, the African continent, Australia, you name it.

This is the face of grass roots fascism. If this is what’s happening at the local level, then it behooves us all to get out at our own local level and be the voice of reason.

If 2016 taught us anything it should have taught us that Donald Trump was the symptom and not the cause of our problems in this country. The fact that he got elected means that it is possible for the crazies to come out in force and for enough right thinking people to be misled. The combination of those two factions is what the GOP is counting on, along with their usual tools of gerrymandering and voter suppression. You are seeing here the effort to mislead in vibrant display. To the extent that effort succeeds we will get another Trump in the White House. Ron DeSantis is counting on it.

  3. Our Vice Mayor, who is Progressive (and one of my son’s best friends) now has a 2nd recall attempt against him. We Progressives are not going to let it happen. You’re right. The asshats are starting at all the low hanging fruit to control how the f*cking tree continues to grow. Education – check. Local government – check. It’s insidious and can’t happen. Police forces have also been infected.

  4. Conservatives and RWNJs learned long ago that control at local levels makes it easier to get into higher levels. (Case: Vallejo, CA, where religious RWNJs had control of the city council for a while.)
    The guy in San Diego shouldn’t wear that color green. It makes him look like a tomato. Also he should tie his hair back and trim his “beard” and ‘stache.

  6. Flynn is a traitor but the Democrats don’t have the cojones to treat him like a traitor. Just like Trump, he should have been in prison years ago, but the rich do not like to set precedents for their own.

    1)Toxic religion.
    Evangelicals tend to.be authoritarian because the OT(the part they like much better than the NT because it has smiting bits,,and unlike the New,,they can be as obnoxious and unhelpful as possible and justify it by the Bible. ) is pretty fascist in many ways.
    ,2) “You can’t tell me what to do” is the warcry of every barely literate redneck moron. They have yet to.accept the obvious fact that they lost the Civil War. The chip on their shoulders is a mou gain of granite. Any deviation from their twisted version of Christianity makes them bloodthirsty. It was so.much fun being a Wiccan in GA. NOT. And a Yankee telling them.to wear masks and get vaccinated makes them drag out the Rebel flag and start beating up.people.
    With that said, every Southern state gets up to50%more than they pay in taxes. If they seceded, a,lot of poor people would become homeless and starve. They cannot afford to secede!

  10. Flynn needs to be court-martialed and lose his standing, pure and simple. And then, he ought to be indicted for aiding in insurrection.
