Did SCOTUS Just Fire The Coup de Grace At the GOP For 2022?

Every time you think it can’t get any weirder. The GOP Trombie who called the MAGA rioters innocent tourists now appears in a picture surging forward to help to barricade the doors to the House chamber on January 6th. The GOP dominated Maricopa County Election Board held a press conference today to request that the unhinged Cyber Ninja’s recount be stopped. Laborious MTG is establishing herself as the First Lady of the post presidency Trump GOP.

On the other hand, President Biden comes out and tells everybody that things are great!, tomorrow we will pass the 60% one shot vaccination rate, on target to hit the 70% mark by July 4th. Oh, and just by the way, in case you forgot, starting on July 15th, those of you with children who qualify will start receiving your monthly child tax credits direct deposited in your checking accounts. Have a nice day! It hardly seems fair.

Now, with the GOP messaging a hot mess, an internal revolution on their hands, becoming more public every day, and the Democrats standing ready to counter the negative GOP messaging with positive messaging of their own, the hammer drops.

Today the Supreme Court announced that it will hear arguments over the Mississippi abortion ban case in the fall session. This could end up being a death knell for the GOP reestablishing any kind of House or Senate control in 2022. This was the last thing the GOP needed, but the court is doing what it was programmed to do.

The Mississippi law was created for one reason, and one reason only. It was created to weave its way through the federal justice system to the Supreme Court to start to overturn the protections of Roe v Wade. The law is ridiculous. It violates 50 years of SCOTUS  law, with an eye to starting to chip away at the existing federal protections. It’s so ridiculous that Mississippi, after losing in the lower federal court, bypassed the appellate court and filed directly with the SCOTUS for review.

The court agreed to hear the case in the fall schedule, which means that the ruling can be expected in April or May 2022. This is a nightmare scenario for the GOP. Roe v Wade has been settled federal law for more than 50 years. Two full generations of American women have grown up under its protections, and a 3rd is about to get a rude awakening midway through their young lives.

Fuck Me! The GOP thought that Trump had a serious problem with white, suburban GOP women? The GOP writ large is about to reap the harvest of what they sowed with the Evangelical base for all of those years. Does the GOP honestly thing that a white, suburban, GOP soccer mon wants to be told by the state that she has to have a 3rd, 4th, or 5rh child against her will because, like, Jesus? Planned Parenthood, along with every other women’s rights activist group out there will make a full court press to educate younger women as to exactly what is at stake here for their personal lives.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! Make no mistake, this is a true nightmare scenario for the GOP, at least in terms of the timing. The GOP is desperately hoping to ride the normal anti incumbent tide to regain at least one chamber in 2022. Now, literally without any viable reason, the SCOTUS has just given the Democrats and every pro choice group in the country a cause celebre to motivate their own base to ensure that the Democrats increase their majority in 2022 to right the ship with the Supreme Court.

Take my word for it folks, everything just went out the window. There was no logical reason for this court to take up this case in the first year of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s term, and the court normally tries to avoid any controversy in a justice’s first year. But as we speak, Roe v Wade has a 67% popularity in this country, and the court has just activated every single one of them to come out and vote to protect their rights. Don’t touch that dial!

  1. OMG!! You’re right. I saw this and thought, oh well, there goes legal abortions. But yes, we will fight like hell. I love your perspective on every thing political.

    • You have laid down a marker. There has been plenty of unresolved debate about exactly what that marker should be. Legal consensus eventually landed on viability outside the womb. There is no medical or scientific consensus. The bible gives no guidance. The only two references that tangentially touch on the topic both assume that an unborn child of any gestational age is the father’s property, and death before birth is a property issue, not the killing of a human being.

Past history has already shown that making abortions illegal fails to accomplish the goal of eliminating abortion. Many supporters of making abortion illegal again also want to make birth control illegal, thus undermining their own goal.

    • Please note-according to Torah/Talmud, a fetus does not become a human and therefore equal to the woman carrying it, until it enters the birth canal. In fact, for the first 40 days of gestation it is only considered to be water. It is not “killing” or at least certainly not “killing” a human, baby, whatever.

I frankly am sick and effing tired of the “it’s killing/murdering babies” crowd stating it’s against G_d’s law to terminate a pregnancy. It is not. Here’s another little tidbit-a pregnancy must be terminated not only if the woman’s life is in danger but also if her health is threatened (the logic being things might be better for the woman in another pregnancy). According to Torah even if the woman wants the child so much she would risk her life/health she is not allowed to do this. Her life and health is the biblical priority.

Effing x-tians are so quick to weaponize G_d but they haven’t a clue what those laws, or Mitzvah more precisely, actually are. And boy am I getting sick and tired of effing x-tians.

      • The bible does not really “say” that, but it is a reasonable inference from the part where God animates Adam by breathing on him.

  2. It’s obvious to me that those who are pro abortion are certainly relieved, happy and satisfied that they themselves we’re not the victims of abortion. Abortion has morphed into a huge business with their so called Planned Parenthood which implies that a woman makes a conscious decision to intentionally become pregnant so that they can simply slaughter their unborn child simple because they consider their developing child to be an annoyance or inconvenience. This is an abhorant practice. These people have been given over to a reprobate mind.

    • ? Do some Planned Parenthood clinics provide abortion services? Yes. Is that the primary function of Planned Parenthood? NO. As the name implies, in addition to providing a range of services including breast cancer screenings and even some service to men their main purpose is providing affordable access to effective forms of birth control. In other words prevent unwanted pregnancies. I suspect you would at least agree that preventing an unwanted pregnancy drastically curtails the need for abortions. Allowing people to plan when they will have children, such as making sure they can absorb the cost of having and raising a child or additional children so they don’t become those “filthy takers” so many so-called pro-life folks so often complain about would seem to be a good thing. Maybe if instead of railing against Planned Parenthood and birth control in general many pro forced birth folks promoted effective and affordable birth control they could actually make a significant impact in the number of abortions. Think about it.

    • No one is actually pro-abortion. As long as you believe such nonsense, there is no possibility of discussion. Abortion is only about 3% of Planned Parenthood’s services. “Reprobate mind” is a biblical phrase. Then you should already know that only two references, both in the Old Testament, even sideways touch on the topic. One, in the law, considers the accidental death of a fetus “when two men strive” to be a property matter. The father’s property has been damaged and the opposing party must pay restitution. That’s it. The second involves Judah’s impregnation of a woman that later turned out to be his own daughter in law. He ordered her to be burned, but when she offered proof that she was with child by him, he rescinded the order. He did not want to destroy his own property, but when he believed it was someone else”s property, well, meh. Talk about a reprobate mind, eh? However, keep in mind that Judah was fully justified according to “God’s Law.”

  3. Yet again, due to the perversely right wing slant in America, the country finds itself out of step and well behind the rest of the world. It’s a topic no longer even considered contentious in Catholic countries like Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay. In the white Anglo group of countries the USA is most associated with, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand, and in Europe generally, the whole issue is decades from being a political football. This is going to be the last gasp of the religious right in a fatal over-reach for them.

  4. 67% of Americans may be in favor of abortion being available but at the moment it is not high on their priority list-according to polls anyway. Whether this changes when it’s gone next year is anyone’s guess.

The various seats in congress the democrats want to flip are in basically red states. Those pols got elected on an anti-abortion platform to begin with. I’m not so sure Roe being overturned, or eviscerated, will make all that much of a difference in those states. Reckon we’ll see.

  5. If the courts over turn RvW then the fake Christians have no more reason to vote. If the Court doesn’t overturn it, they still have no reason to vote anymore because it doesn’t do any good.

Sure this could inspire our base, but regardless of how it comes out, it will probably suppress the R vote.
