I’m going to go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that The Tiny Thumbs Diktator is feeling a lot more isolated these days. I have nothing concrete to base this on, just a wild hair up my ass. And apparently I’m not the only one with itchy shorts these days, as each new aide, lawyer or adviser departs in a blaze of fire and brimstone, and as the Oval Office walls inexorably close in with each new scandal or development, Trump’s proximity to fellow homo sapiens diminishes, and the press is all over it like white on rice.
The media is reporting all of this as startling, dangerous developments, but are they? I guess it all depends on your perspective, and your point of view. For those of us who can form a sentence of more than three words without using the ones “I” or “me,” or”my,” these are ominous signs. It’s a dangerous, nasty, complicated world out there, and even a man who has spent his whole life immersed in the complexities of politics and global diplomacy needs skilled and trusted advisers to steer his ship safely through the shoals, not to mention criminal defense attorneys who can actually find their way to court as anything other than a defendant. But for a guy who watches the window in a washing machine, thinking to himself, “Jeez! This detergent commercial on Fox and Friends is taking forever to get over with!”? Fuggedaboudit.
But how does Donald Trump look at this increasing isolation? After all, he alone can change it with a snap of his fingers, a single phone call. How does he feel about this lonely plateau he finds himself stranded on? Personally, I think he’s just hunky-dory with the whole thing.
An insecure man needs an entourage. A shallow man needs handlers. A dumb man needs advisers and aides. But this is a man who famously said in a rally, “Cuz I have, you know, like the best brain.” What does a man like the Cheeto Prophet need with a bunch of sycophants, toadies and smartasses with a bunch of letters after their name? And not to pick nits here, but wasn’t it the media itself that was reporting only a couple of weeks ago that Trump was feeling his oats? That the departures were emboldening him, that he felt more comfortable in the job and no longer felt he needed the guidance? Which is it gonna be, you can’t have this both ways?
If you want to know how Trumpelthinskin feels about his increased isolation, it’s not hard. All you have to do is to look at the people in positions of high power that Trump himself idolizes. Vladimir Putin is a strong, forceful leader. Putin surrounds himself with rich, powerful people, and owns the controls that should keep check on him, like the media, the legislature and the judiciary. Oh yeah, and people who irritate him have a nasty habit of being dragged out of rooms with canvas bags over their heads, or clumsily falling out of windows in high buildings. Kim Jong Un changes generals more frequently than he changes his BVD’s, and has used his own relatives who don’t clap enthusiastically enough when his august, pie faced self waddles through a door for RPG target practice.
What has Trump been doing since day one? Putin owns the media. Trump can’t quite manage that, so he’s deligitimizing it instead, trying to make it into an “enemy of the people.” Putin owns the Dumas, or Russian legislature. Trump came into this thinking that having the GOP control both chambers of congress would give him carte blanche, but unfortunately for Trump, our constitution was set up purposely to decentralize government, not consolidate it into a single persons hands. And while Putin controls the judiciary, Trump is finding out the hard way that while he may be able to control the ideological bent of his judges, he can’t control their “concept” of justice or their decisions. His own hand picked Supreme Court Justice, Neil Gorsuch just provided the swing vote against him in a deportation case.
The media is reporting alarmingly about the sudden lack of counsel and control around the President in his time of peril. But the media is missing the fact that for Donald Trump, this is not a bug, it’s a feature.Trump doesn’t need anybody to give him advice, because “He alone can fix this.” In one of my all time favorite movies, “The Jerk,” Steve Martin told Bernadette Peters, “I don’t need you! I don’t need anybody! All I need in the whole world is my dog! And this chair! And this thermos!” In the end, Navin Johnson found love, peace, and happiness in his simple roots. Trump is going to find misery, an orange jumpsuit, and protein loaf for dinner. But at the moment, he’s still at the part where he loudly sends the vichyssoise back to the kitchen to get heated up because it was served cold. Donald J Trump is just fine right now, thank you very much.
