Well, the news (continuing) coming out about this thing just keeps getting more and more “everything”. There’s not one word to use for it. There is a lot we could use to describe the embarrassing pseudo-speech, because Trump, as expected (ouch), kept babbling. They really should have had someone with a shepherd’s crook to yank him off “stage”. He would be screaming and cursing, but we would be applauding with energy and verve. Slightly delayed, and my regards to Raw Story:

A wave of critiques rolled in Tuesday night after President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, with plenty of people saying that the president’s speech sounded eerily like one of his MAGA campaign rallies. The president gave a rambling, record-breaking speech in the House Chamber amid growing concerns over his handling of priorities among voters, the economy, and looming potential military action with Iran.

Iran. Lawdy. We do NOT need to be involved in a war over there. If nothing else, supplies are going to be difficult, nay, no, make that tough, challenging, formidable, demanding, and complicated. Just the distance alone from the US to Iran is a major factor. How about something like feeding all the people on a Navy vessel? Trump isn’t thinking that far. He isn’t thinking about costs, either. There are about a ton of things to consider. It’s not easy!!

“This is a MAGA variety show masquerading as a #SOTU using campaign rally rhetoric. It is a national embarrassment, and the world sees it as such,” BBC political analyst Mary Anne Marsh wrote on X. ////. “MAGA has become cringe. I’m not sure when it happened. But, as a movement, it has become cringe. It has become everything it poked fun at with progressives, with the way they react to events and talk about society.

They’ve even created their own vocabulary. It’s fascinating,” fintech growth specialist Spencer Horton wrote on X.  //// “This isn’t a state of the union. It’s a MAGA rally, complete with tirades, partisan aggression, and wandering stories. And of course, it’s really long,” Robert E. Kelly, professor of political science at Pusan National University in South Korea, wrote on X.

Once again, I apologize for not watching or even trying to watch this. But it seems that people who did have a lot to say, so we can enjoy it vicariously. The overall impression is that it was a waste of time, a good place to take a nap, but look like you’re actually paying attention, a farce. Don’t forget the national embarrassment part. How many people turned it off within 5 minutes? That number would be interesting to know, as well as the ones who actually made it through. And our legislators were stuck with the whole thing, although it was mentioned that some got up and walked out. They were the ones who retained their sanity.

To everyone watching the SOTUwelcome to a Trump rally!! Once upon a time, overtly political speeches on the House floor were frowned upon. They were meant to call for unity and speak to the American people. That changed with Trump…. and yet, MAGA blames the press for a divided country,” Sofia B. Kinzinger, wife of former Rep. Adam Kinzinger and longtime GOP comms strategist, wrote on X. ////.

We’ve learned nothing about the state of our union in this nearly 2-hour rally. No sense of where we’re headed or what’s going on with Iran. It’s all just a show for Trump. Once again, his ego reigns supreme and takes something away from the many remarkable stories and people recognized tonight. And that’s really quite sad. #SOTU,” communications consultant and strategist Maura Gillespie wrote on X.

Yes, it is sad. Just another example of our president being an imbecile. Props to the people who listen and understand what he’s blathering about. I use other people’s words to try to understand. I guess that means I’m not really a “political” writer. At least I managed political humor on occasion, so that’s something? The detours off the main path are enjoyable. Others discuss the main things, so we can have some fun, with the occasional rant (I miss those, heh) and a side story I hope is enjoyable. See you soon!

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

    • And it says a lot for our country, in the absolute wrong way, that most of us did NOT expect anything else. It’s embarrassing. And flat-out SAD.

  1. Don’t beat yourself up for not watching Susan. I am so sick of that poor excuse for a human that I can’t stand the sound of his voice, can’t stand to even see him, and definitely am not interested in anything he has to say because it’s never good. You couldn’t pay me to watch him.

    • Yea, agreed, it started with I can’t stand his voice, I have no desire to look at him except when I need a picture. And the only interest in what he says is what I can mock. Or “abuse”. (Not in the physical sense. I’d need a gas mask.) HA.

  2. Despite only being eleven years old I saw the coverage up in Chicago of the shit-show our own nominating convention in 1968 became. I was encouraged earlier than that to pay attention to politics, in no small measure because of the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s. I still vividly remember the day JFK was assassinated. And from a year earlier when every adult seemed terrified – the Cuban Missile Crisis. I also remember like it was yesterday when my mom woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me Bobby Kennedy had been shot and that it didn’t look good. (She was working in the wee hours baking for a wedding). The next morning was the last day of school. A short day. After turning in our textbooks our teacher, like others let us go outside to kill time until noon when school would officially be over. I sat with some classmates, friends from my baseball team and we talked about Bobby, hoping against hope and all the political stuff we’d seen playing out not just that year but in earlier ones.

My point is that after that, I decided I had a duty to pay attention at certain times. I made it a point to watch the SOTU no matter who was President as normally after bragging about what they’d gotten done (often exaggerating) and both the Democratic and Republican conventions. I think it’s important to, even if I’m sure know I’m unlikely to approve of what I see/hear to get a look at how the other side thinks, acts and how they would govern if given the chance. Yes, it can be tedious and Tuesday night sure as hell was.

I didn’t need any reminder that GOP Congress Critters are afraid of Trump but it was still instructive to see them keep jumping up. It’s instructive because that footage will be in Democratic campaign ads for Senate and House seats that are in play. Some might figure they can skate past it back home once the primaries are over which reminds me of what Jon Stewart so often said starting over twenty years ago – ‘Haven’t these assholes ever heard of videotape?’ It matters because they are set on their course now. Changing down the road will be difficult, and stopping being part of Trump’s support?

As most people how long it takes for a fully laden supertanker or aircraft carrier at normal crusing speed to come to a complete “crash stop” and most thing in terms of the length of four to six football fields. Some think more getting up into half-mile territory. In reality it takes seven or eight MILES and depending on the seas sometimes well over eight miles! The point is that sometimes that’s simply not enough time.

And watching Tues night I see the same problem for the GOP. IF our candidates properly use the moment those who did what they felt they had to do to win a primary won’t be able to “stop in time.” For me that’s a boost of energy, and one I can share with discouraged folks who gave up after Trump got back in the WH.
