Nothing like chaos in the heart of the federal government, right? Just this morning we read that the Department of Justice was seeking to enjoin the court orders of two federal judges ordering Donald Trump to disburse SNAP benefits in full and begin that process now, today, Friday November 7. While details are unclear at this time, Aaron Parnas is reporting that Trump has reversed course and has decided not to fight the judiciary. Maybe it’s because once again his DOJ went to a gun fight with a can opener?

Good evening, everyone. Here’s where things stand: SNAP benefits are finally being paid out. Despite the Trump administration rushing an emergency appeal into the courts, officials have begun releasing full SNAP funds and states are already reporting money hitting recipients’ cards. How long this reversal holds is an open question, and we’ll be watching closely for the next turn in this fast-moving fight.

At the same time, a wave of coordinated protests swept across the country today, with faculty, staff, and students at more than 100 campuses rallying against the administration’s escalating pressure on higher education.

With that, here’s what you missed:

  • Despite appealing a judge’s order that condemned delays, the Trump administration told states it will temporarily issue full SNAP benefits during the shutdown even though it argues it only has funding for partial payments, leaving millions reliant on food aid caught in an unprecedented budget standoff.

The cost of SNAP is $9Billion and ostensibly $5Billion is in an emergency fund and can be disbursed. One assumes that those funds are being disbursed. However, that’s only about half the money needed and where the rest of the funding will come from, I am seeking to find out. It’s most likely that the $5Billion will not be depleted in the first few months and afford plenty of time for the remaining $4Billion to be allocated.

But it goes to show the theatrics and ultimate impotence of the Trump administration and particularly the feckless Department of Justice. Somebody was able to explain to the Trump administration how it couldn’t win and so it folded. Again. Like a cheap suit.
