We have yet another entry in the ‘You can’t make this stuff up’ file. I wrote in an article last week that poor old Irony finally caught a break. So of course Republicans had to turn the tables. GOP Rep. Andy Biggs daughter Mylie Biggs was as recently as a year ago on record questioning whether women should hold elected office. Ah, but that was then. Now she’s running for state Office in Arizona!
You can read about this latest example of GOP hypocrisy on HuffPost. I wonder given who her father is whether other people will run for the same seat in a primary. If so, will they have the stones to throw her past statements in her face? It would make for some fireworks on a debate stage to be sure. Then if she makes it through she’ll have to face a Democrat and in an election where GOP candidates all over the country will be leaning back in defense mode. If she’s not in a hugely safe red district a Democrat might be able to play the hell out of this – right into the seat she wants!
According to HuffPost the Phoenix New Times decided to take a look at Mylie Biggs after her late June announcement she was running for the state legislature. It’s not like the child of an elected official running for office themselves is new. And, in her case her dad is in pretty good with Trump. I’m not sure that will turn out to be a good thing next year but let’s face it. Trump is wounded and bleeding but he’s still got lots of MAGA support. Arizona however isn’t as solidly red as it once was so this could be interesting, especially if Biggs makes it through her primary.
Anyway what the Times learned when they took an actual look at Mylie Biggs is hilarious, at least to me. Look, I believe if a woman wants to be a wife and mom and not work outside the home so what? Hell, thinking about what I was like, and my sisters being much more of a handful than I was being a mom and guiding kids into becoming responsible adults is serious work. Full time work. Still, I can see why many women would want to work at least part-time just to have interactions with adults that aren’t all about kids! However if the extra money from a mom working isn’t needed then if they choose not to hold traditional jobs it’s their choice. Hell, I’m even okay with them saying they believe women who can should focus on raising the kids. It’s about personal CHOICES.
It’s when they start denigrating women who work and even have serious careers I get pissed off. And the daughter of a professional politician criticizing women who are also public servants is even worse. In Biggs’ case stuff like calling Kamala Harris a ‘DEI hire’ is way out of bounds. But one gets the sense that she didn’t feel conservative women in politics were setting the right example for women. At least until she decided it would be good for HER. There’s precious little out there about her so far other than she’s in her mid twenties, barely old enough to hold office. Mylie graduated from college and apparently has been working in some minor political job. That’s it.
I do find it striking that a “traditional” thinking GOP woman, someone who might see reruns of Father Knows Best would see that kind of thing and believe that’s the way the world should be even went to college. Or that she didn’t find a partner and get married and start having kids upon graduation. Note that her name is Mylie BIGGS which means she’s not married or chose not to take her hubby’s name. I’ve seen enough GOP campaign ads to know that if she had a husband and kids we’d be seeing THEM in pictures and videos introducing her as a candidate for office.
But let’s get back to the fact that little miss ‘Women should leave politics to men’ is running for elected office. A year ago, Aug. 6 2024 on a podcast she actually said “I don’t know if females should be in office.” Okay. She was entitled to her opinion and free to express it. She even doubled down on her opinion:
“I don’t think women should hold office, in general. Like, it’s a man’s position. That’s my stance. I think women should, you know, run the home,” she said.
Her male companions offered no objection.
“There’s so many videos on even TikTok where so many girls are waking up and are like, whoever fought for my right to work, like, I hate them,” Biggs said.
“I hate a 9-to-5 schedule,” she went on. “Like, I get home and I don’t want to do anything else. Women aren’t built for this. I just want to be a wife. I just want to be a mom.”
She added that middle-eastern leaders wouldn’t respect a woman in a position of power. Hey, maybe she’d be content with being a state elected official and only engaging in relatively minor (now common) GOP grifting. Still, she’s joining the ranks of Republican women who have preached one thing for everyone else but want voters to make an exception for THEM.
I say there’s a question that should be put to women like Biggs in public – hit them with statements she’s made about politics being a “man’s job” and bluntly ask “What makes YOU so special?” It would be particularly hard-hitting if it came from an accomplished professional woman who could cite her own achievements before asking “Why do you say I shouldn’t hold office given my credentials but YOU with so little experience other than appearing with your dad should get to be elected?”
In a way I hope she does make it through any primary although I suspect her dad will make sure the field is clear of anyone else. If she winds up being the GOP candidate it will all come down to how well (or not) the Arizona legislature gerrymandered that State Senate district. It’s the same place her dad once represented. According to the linked article it includes a good chunk of Maricopa County and if you recall recent elections that county has become fraught with uncertainties for Republicans. If we’re lucky, she will make such a mess of it that her dad’s re-election experiences problems.

Friends, if you can help us with a small donation or an ad-free subscription, it would be appreciated. We are attempting to get through a year of depressed traffic and make it to 2026, where the grass will hopefully be greener due to the midterms. Thank you. Ursula

In a nation of hypocrites…she’s just another one.
Hmm, maybe suggest that it sounds like she’s a man in woman’s body. After all, she thinks only men should hold office…
