In politics you have to study patterns. Anything can happen once. To err is human. But when you’re looking at a situation where the same aberrant behaviors happen on a daily basis and become the norm, it’s time to sit up and take notice. We have seen Donald Trump deterioriate in the nine years that he’s been on the political scene but never so much as in the past few months. And even the past two days have been very bizarre. First of all, let’s start with the photo atop this piece. Trump is sitting on a black towel, yes? Why in the world would that be, do you suppose?

One theory is that it’s Trump’s coat tails. That would make sense, but look at how long the coat would have to be. So maybe we can throw that idea out. Another theory is that it’s a board that Trump is sitting on, so he doesn’t sink into the couch, being as corpulent as he is. Or, we can just use Occam’s Razor and say that it’s a black towel and it was put under him so he doesn’t stain the couch with, ahem, *leaks* from his clothing.

Just leave that in the back of your mind as you listen to this commentary from Trump’s Detroit rally last night about Joe Biden.

That is a flat out disgrace to politics. This vulgar, tribal, down and dirty commentary that Trump lapses into routinely is completely beyond the pale. And he did it again tonight in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It was a disturbing performance and yet a new low when he called Vice President Harris a “shit vice president” and told her, “Get the hell out,” and “You’re FIRED!” He doesn’t have the right to fire Harris. Only the American people do. This is Heather Cox Richardson’s take on it.

He went on to call Vice President Kamala Harris—whose name he deliberately mispronounced—“a sh*t vice president. The worst. You’re the worst vice president. Kamala, you’re fired. Get the hell out of here, you’re fired. Get out of here. Get the hell out of here, Kamala.”

As Trump’s remarks got weirder and weirder, the Fox News Channel cut away and instead showed Harris being cheered at a packed, exuberant, super-charged rally in Georgia.

Trump’s speech comes on top of his repeated backing out of interviews and his bizarre appearances. Last night, his advice to an audience in Detroit to vote took its own wild turn: “Jill, get your fat husband off the couch,” he said. “Get that fat pig off the couch. Tell him to go and vote for Trump, he’s going to save our country. Get that guy the hell off our— get him up, Jill, slap him around. Get him up. Get him up, Jill. We want him off the couch to get out and vote.”

Trump’s performances over the past few days seem to confirm that the 2024 October surprise is the increasingly obvious mental incapacity of the Republican candidate for president.

It seems clear that a vote for Trump is really a vote for his running mate, Ohio senator J.D. Vance, who if he becomes president will be the youngest American president in our history. At 40 years old, he is two years younger than Theodore Roosevelt was when he took office in 1901 at 42. Vance would also be one of the least experienced presidents ever. His 18 months in the Senate has given him only slightly more experience in office than Chester Alan Arthur, who succeeded James Garfield in 1881. Arthur was a political operative who had never held elected office at all before becoming vice president.

This is a realistic assessment of what we have seen. And maybe this is the GOP plan and has been all along. Maybe the plan has been that if Trump is somehow reelected, that J.D. Vance invokes the 25th Amendment and Trump is removed from office and Vance becomes president. Because if there is one thing that we are seeing as each day towards November 5 goes by, Trump is not fit to serve as president.

    • Carol you know what’s wrong with him. Just like we all do. Malignant narcissist. Projects EVERYTHING he is onto everyone else. It’s called DARVO. Deny, Attack and Reverse Victim – Offender. He will always be the victim and everyone else the offender. Add in that he is sliding into either alzehimers (like his mom) or dementia (like his dad) and here we are.

  3. That towel reminds me of the Seinfeld episode about Poppy pissing on Jerry’s couch when he gets upset. Oh and the first time he really gets upset is when Elaine confronts him about a woman’s right to choose. I guess faux news has no faith in Depends.

    • I came here to post the same thing. It’s great to post truth but sometimes we tend to post exaggerations and then believe our own exaggerations. I try very hard to research both sides, not because I want to believe the magats, but because I want to believe the TRUTH. We tend to forget about that at times while making fun of the fat pile of orange stain. There is so little truth to that orange stain on our society and the presidency, but we need to post it when it is there or NOT post things that are not fully researched before calling them truth. Just sayin…..

  4. Ursula, all due respect to you and Heather Cox Richardson (love ya both), Arthur may not have held elective office, but his resume for running a country is stellar compared to 25th amendment Vance!! Arthur was Quartermaster General, then Inspector General, then Engineer-in-Chief for the New York Militia (National Guard). He was Collector of Customs at the Port of NY (a Federal gig). He was Chair of the NY Republican Party. All of these jobs had responsibilities and management skills employees and bosses to answer to. Vance has not done anything near these jobs and answers only to Peter Thiel. Just sayin’.

  5. Fact check: Sorry, but Aaron Rupar posted video on twitter that shows trump sitting down on the couch, without a towel. What looks like a towel is his baggy suit jacket.

  6. I’ve often wondered how MAGA parents, trying to raise their children to be honest and respectful, explain to the kids why they support Trump. “Yes, we’re voting for that man, just don’t BE like him!” WTAF?? God help us if we end up with a generation that sees Trump as a role model.
