The attack upon the husband of the Speaker of the House at 2:27 a.m. Friday morning by an assailant who broke in and assaulted Paul Pelosi with a hammer, “severely beating him about the head and body,” and crying out, “Where’s Nancy?!” is not a surprise, unfortunately. It’s almost one of those things where you wonder why it didn’t happen sooner.

The tribalism and hatred that has been sowed in the past seven years ago, since the Era of Trump got into full swing and took over our politics, is the kind of mentality that leads to this level of personalized and senseless violence.

This is not democracy. The democratic process, as well any reasonable person knows, is about the swinging of a pendulum. Sometimes one party is in power, sometimes the other. The pendulum will always swing back and forth. That is its nature.

Fascism, however, is a different kind of political system. Fascism is about killing or destroying the opposition and instituting a one-party state, which stays in power forever. That is what MAGA seeks and it makes no bones about it.

It’s a blessed thing that the assailant was arrested and the Speaker’s husband is expected to fully recover. This could have been far far worse.

And what does it say about America? What it says is that we are seriously out of balance. The two political parties are not, in fact, political parties for the same country. They have morphed into two parties, each representing a separate culture, within a country that has split in two.

This is no longer a metaphorical or hypothetical distinction here. There is a culture war taking place. There are two separate tribes of people in the United States, each listening to different media, each believing a different set of facts, and acting upon those facts. Ergo, it is scarcely surprising that after years of listening to what an abject monster and enemy of America Nancy Pelosi is, that some right-winger would break into her home into the middle of the night, looking to do violence to her, and instead, do violence to her spouse.

This is real. The right-wing ecosystem is a violent one. It’s got its own airwaves and its own social media platforms, its own newspapers. Those outlets are all ruled by people who hold pursuit of profit and power over the masses as their only values. They don’t care about democracy. Screw democracy, in fact, if they can obtain money and power through theocracy, autocracy, kakistocracy, any word that ends in “y” like money does, because that is the name of this game. There is no other. Money and its cousin power, that’s who we are talking about here.

This is the golden age of disinformation. There’s money in fantasy. Big money. And anytime there is big money, look for power brokers who know how to take advantage of peoples’ vulnerabilities and exploit them to show up.

America has gotten lazy. Education is severely on the decline. People don’t know how government works anymore. People don’t study American history as they once did. Combine lack of information with avid disinformation, provided with a side of fear mongering and seasoned with propaganda, and this is what you get.

The identity of the assailant of Paul Pelosi has not yet been revealed. But I’m going to venture that this is politically motivated, based upon the fact that CNN reported a short while ago that “Where’s Nancy?!” were the first words out of his mouth. He knew where he was. He targeted that home.

We will know more as the day progresses, but we already know the gist of what happened, which is that yet another cultural boundary and norm got shattered early this morning. Politics is a war zone. Ask Anthony Fauci. He’s had to provide himself and his four children with security protection for years. And for no other reason than that demonizing the pandemic and the doctor paid out big. Speaker Pelosi has been demonized for the same reason. We are a sick culture right now.

  1. I would like to know how in h___ this happened, given that Nancy Pelosi is supposed be under secret service protection 24/7. Did her SS guys purposely LET it happen? Her SS guys need to be fired immediately. She is third in line for the presidency FFS.

    • A whole bunch of SS guys need firing, including managers. Before the 6th they knew about specific threats to Pelosi and DIDN’T inform Capitol Police. Then there’re the ones who knew about rally-goers with firearms, illegal in DC, and did nothing. MAGAts whinge about the Deep State, well the rot is deep.

    • Family members are not automatically provided with Secret Service protection. If Pelosi had been in San Francisco, it would have been a different story. She was not.

    • It’s more complicated than that. The Secret Service by law protects the President and Vice-President and their families. However, the full protections we all know about only extends to the President and the next person in the line of succession. Now, the President does have the authority to extend protection (up to and including round the clock) to other federal officials such as Cabinet Officers and for those high in the line of succession like SecState it has often been done. (Let’s leave former office holders out of all this)

As for the Speaker of the House (actually the top two officials in both Parties) security is provided by the Capitol Police. Those assigned to the Federal Protective Service details aren’t Secret Service but they know their jobs. If Speaker Pelosi wasn’t in San Fransico perhaps those guarding the house got lax. Or perhaps, as with the Secret Service a rot has set in that needs to be rooted out.

So now we have the specter of the FBI’s New York Field Office with its cabal of RWNJ assholes both serving and retired who are all in on the worst aspects of the GOP (who do you think leaked the story about Senator Menendez being the target of an SDNY investigation? – just like they did to Hillary with that “October Surprise?”) which means the FBI still has rot that needs to be cleaned out. (Not even Mueller was willing to do anything about it when he was Director and yes, the problem has gone on that long – decades) We have the decline of the ever increasingly politicized Secret Service which started with it being taken out of Treasury and placed in DHS and that rot is even more troubling. And now? We KNOW there were Capitol Police who helped the J6 rioters. And upper elements didn’t heed, or act on information they had about what was about to go down so we shouldn’t be surprised there are Officers with those seditionist sentiments that might be on protective details which means there is rot that needs to be cleaned out there as well.

We are in dangerous times to be sure.

I’d imagine President Biden will talk this over with Pelosi and that either the Secret Service will take over her protection or will be brought in to augment it. There’s been some time for assessment of who is ok and who to worry about since Biden’s been in office.

  2. By this point, we know good and goddamn well what these people are about. You want to make a difference over the next 11 days so that shit like this is highly discouraged? GOTMFV!

Do not whine to me about gerrymandering, voter intimidation or any of the classic hits that I have heard ad naseum at this point. Quit waiting for the legal system to solve a political problem (thank you, Teri Kanefield!). Move your feet off the sidelines and onto the front line. The only way this insanity ends is when we put a stop to it? Who’s with me?

  3. Should it turn out the assailant/criminal was provoked by a steady diet of Fox “News” and was an avid Trumpster, we all know the right-wingers will be crying out “lone wolf–it’s not out fault” but if this had been Kevin McCarthy’s wife being attacked by a progressive (or just someone who expressed one random anti-Trump comment), then the whole of the progressive movement would be held responsible.

  4. Ursula the only thing I disagree with was your statement that the two parties believe a different set of “facts”. That’s not true. The democrats are the ONLY party that believes in facts. That’s a fact. We should not legitimize the cult that not only doesn’t believe in facts, they spread lies as facts. Remember alternative facts ARE LIES.

    • Yes Scott, well stated, ‘each believing a different set of facts, and acting upon those facts.’ is wrong. It is not true, as you say. There are not two sets of facts. There is one set of facts and one set of lies and fantasies. One side, ours, believes on basing things on facts and realities, the other side, fascism, is quite happy to base things on lies, fabrication, and fantasy.
There are facts and there are lies.
