The United States is going to soon have a conversation that it has never had before in its history. In a little over a month, one of the candidates for president will be sentenced in connection with the unanimous guilty verdict handed down on May 30, 2024 in Manhattan. The basic conversation will deal with how this particular convicted felon will be sentenced because four days later he’s supposed to be in Milwaukee to accept the Republican nomination for president of the United States. But will he be in jail?

How probable that is, or even how plausible it might be, all things considered, we don’t know. But legally it is a distinct possibility and it would be remiss of us not to take a look at the possibility and toss it around. Donald Trump will be sentenced on July 11. It is conceivable that he could be remanded to a jail cell then and there. Let’s put it this way: Justice Juan Merchan has that within his power and if it was any other criminal defendant who has broken a gag order eleven times and shown repeated disrespect and contempt for the court, it almost certainly would happen that way. But this is the Mango Messiah Of MAGA we are speaking of here and moreover, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, so these are variables which will have to be considered in sentencing. Just for the heck of it, let’s speculate what Trump behind bars might look like.

Trump made it clear during his Friday morning press conference that he really does not want to go to jail.

Trump said, “This is the crime that I committed that I’m supposed to go to jail for 187 years for when you have violent crime all over this city.”

I still believe that Donald Trump won’t see the inside of a jail cell, but if Trump gets home confinement, the problem is the same for the Republicans. The GOP could be holding a convention in July where they proclaim that they are the party of law and order while awarding their presidential nomination to a man who can’t attend the convention in person because he has been convicted of 34 felonies.

Fox News has been discussing the possibility that Trump will have to address the Republican convention by phone if he is incarcerated.

Is this a realistic possibility? Prisoners don’t normally have phones and address political conventions from their jail cells. Nor do prisoners have Secret Service details attending them. And as we’ve already joked about here, what about Melania? Will she have an adjoining cell? That question I do feel confident about answering definitively: Melania will be nowhere near any of this, not even as a visitor on the other side of the glass and you can forget about conjugal visits. I think you could take this question to a Las Vegas bookie and get some very high odds that it would go down any other way.

The problem for the Republican Party is that even if Trump is able to show up at the Republican convention, his presence will serve to remind swing voters that the Republican Party is currently being led by a convicted felon.

It might be better for the GOP if Trump was incarcerated because he would not be a constant visual reminder of the party’s hypocrisy.

To the normal minded, yes. But the GOP is taking the stance that Trump is a political prisoner. Trump has used those very words, “I am a political prisoner in a failing nation.” Here are the possibilities:

  1. Trump could be sentenced and taken to jail right away;
  2. Trump could be sentenced and part of that sentence may be home confinement with an ankle bracelet;
  3. Trump could be sentenced and the sentence suspended to take place after the GOP convention, or
  4. Conceivably after the election. Now in the event Trump wins, then could he knock out the sentence? Who knows? If Trump wins he will be a dictator, not just for a day, as he has quipped he wanted to be, but for the rest of his life. Even though the law states that a sentence in a state court cannot be pardoned by a president, if Trump gets back in, anything goes.

And once again, the fact that we’re even having this conversation shows you how far down the dark dark ladder our culture has gone. There is nothing normal about this conversation. There is nothing normal about this picture. The only reason you’re watching this strange show on your television set is because the GOP decided long ago to be Trump’s complicit enabler and go along with everything he does.

There may be nothing wrong with your television set but there is everything wrong with the Republican party. That’s how we got here. The only way to get our country back from the toxin of MAGA and Trump is to get as many of them out of office as possible until they purge Trump, or Trump dies of natural causes and they move on from him out of sheer necessity.

The sentencing in July will be an important step towards this eventual resolution.

  1. The judge has two choices: send him to jail like anyone else and restore respect for the law, or treat him, once again, as if he’s a goddamn king, and show the rest of us the LAW IS FULL OF SHIT, talking about EQUAL JUSTICE! PROVE IT OR SHUT THE PHUCK UP! Why not fascism when you already are busy destroying justice? Go sell it somewhere else.

    • A frustration I’m seeing is the fact that mainstream news channels are slipping into a dark passage to hell themselves … Repeatedly, as Biden is striving to corral hot crap flying around other countries, supporting and appreciating the efforts of WWII survivors in France, with personal thanks and THEN, they had the audacity to broadcast Trump’s disapproval of Biden’s attempt to over-ride all the do-nothing GOP in doing SOMETHING about the fact we have 3.4 million people waiting to get their court date to become citizens or not and the GOP has sat so long on their hands, they are beginning to be growing attachments, and may never be able to release their buns …

      It is SO SAD, they actually think Trump should have ANY SAY about our true president, being a convicted criminal .. Who the hell cares what Trump, the world’s biggest loser thinks?

  2. Aspiring criminally convicted POTUS candidates may not be prevented from ‘doing what they need to do, a prison cell; however, an inmate must abide by the laws/bylaws/rules of the incarcerating facility, and that’s where there’ll be no leeway for having and using the extras – phone, telex, etc., – hopefully. Hopefully!

  4. I don’t see the judge putting Von Shitzinpantz in a cell. Home confinement? Perhaps. Thing is with these types of white collar crimes, the first time usually doesn’t get jail time. I’d be real surprised if he got house confinement. He’s going to keep this sh*t tied up in appeals anyway so unless NY has something where they have to serve their sentence while it is being appealed, he’d be out and about anyway.

    IF he got house confinement he’d be at maralardo most likely (unless forced into house confinement in NY) and I’m thinking they’d try to have the hootenanny outside on the maralardo grounds. It is fairly sizable isn’t it?

    He’s got some more serious trials ahead of him that actually will require jail time, first offense or not. I just don’t think this one is the one that’ll put him in the pokey.

    • spike I was led out of family court twice in cuffs and legirons for not having a job to pay child support to serve 30 days in the county jail. Long story but it was my ex that committed adultery and blew up our 12 year marriage. He has committed contempt of court 10x and is STILL violating court orders. At the least he should serve time for contempt of court. I’m tired of folks making EXCUSES for the inequality of the law. Or everyone can stop talking about equal justice because it’s horseshit.

  5. I think the most we can hope for is an ankle bracelet at Man-go-Lardo.

    How many first time offenders are convicted for *34* counts? He isn’t really a fist time offender, but a serial.one.

  6. This might not be his first offense if he had been indicted, tried, and convicted every time he should have over the years!
