Stay with me and imagine Putin’s armed forces were as formidable as everyone feared prior to his invasion of Ukraine. Then imagine a scenario where instead of Crimea Putin seized control of Alaska. Then moved down the west coast of Canada to build a “Land Bridge” to our west coast states, and even pushed east from them?  And we were much closer to our capabilities pre-WWII? But well liked in the world which would be outraged. THEN imagine Trump or any U.S. President being sidelined while China (the world’s most powerful country behind ours in many ways) being the one to sit down with Putin and negotiate a “peace” deal. And us being expected to shut up and take whatever was agreed to.

Tell me Trump and every effing MAGA out there wouldn’t HOWL in outrage just like the rest of us? It would be a gigantic chorus raised in a single voice screeching “Who the F**K is Xi to be deciding OUR fate. WE were illegally under international law invaded!  Russia has committed war crimes almost every day!  Now you want US to sit on the sideline while the murderous dictator who cause all this death and destruction meets with a third Party WE didn’t approve of to negotiate on our behalf?”  Even back in pre-WWII plenty of American households had guns and ammo. And veterans of WWI. We’d have fought like hell and kept fighting a guerilla war after any foreign brokered “peace deal”. Even the America First goobers who were touting Hitler. People in this country would form a resistance and make life hell for Russia just like Ukraine will do if it comes to that.

If Putin thinks he’d be dealing with the Ukraine that endured oppression during the Cold War he’s badly mistaken.  But he’s as delusional in his own way as Trump is in his. So think about this summit taking place in Alaska (WTF?) of all places Friday between Putin and Trump. It’s unclear if Zelensky will try to go, or even if he did that he’d be allowed in on any “negotiations.” What we can expect is Putin will have a list of outrageously unacceptable (to Ukraine, NATO/Europe and everyone in the free world except Trump) demands. Trump’s fat “gut” will want to give in on every single one. However even HE knows some of Putin’s wish list will have to be trimmed, at least for the moment.

Putin knows it too which is why some demands he’s already made public have been declared non-starters by Ukraine’s actual President. Zelensky has flatly stated no freaking way and weary as they are of war Ukrainians will back him to the hilt. So why have the summit in the first place? It seems pretty clear to me Trump believes he can impose his will on Ukraine, NATO and our other allies as whatever he and Putin say are the terms it’s the best that can be done.

And of course immediately start demanding his goddamned Nobel Peace Prize. Like they’d give him one for rewarding a murderous dictator who’d committed a long, long list of war crimes. And will keep doing so both in Ukraine and whatever country(s) is next as he tries to rebuild the USSR before he finally dies.  However a Nobel Peace Prize (not to mention keeping Vlad happy) is Trump’s dream (more like delusion) so prepare to be astounded at the wild-ass batshit insane ‘Peace Deal’ Trump and Pootie will announce and try to impose.

It will be interesting to see how conservatives, especially Congressional Republicans react. Most will be afraid to stand up to Trump, and tell him both it’s a hugely bad idea but also that he can’t just go breaking treaties the United States is a party to all on his own. Some will. (Anyone besides me wondering what’s going through Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski’s mind right now?) This is all bad in ways I can’t even imagine. All I know for sure is a lesson I learned early in life – no matter how bad things are they can ALWAYS get worse.

Come the end of their summit and announcing their agreed upon terms for “Peace in Ukraine” we can be certain we will see a succession of “It’s worse” moments. History had already been judged the 20th century to be “The American Century.”  I feel safe in saying long before Trump is gone history will have already judged the 21st to be “The Americans Pissed It All Away” century. I fear we are already past the point of no return on that, and I just don’t see Republicans joining forces with us to stop Trump from blowing up any credibility and trust we have in the world.

It’s not like given enough time someday a large measure of it can’t be rebuilt. From the start we were derided with the term “Grand Experiment but winning the War of 1812 made the world start to take us more seriously. Then it watched us tear ourselves apart in the Civil War and we were again looked at as an undisciplined step-child. But good old American ingenuity had us inventing things and systems/processes. If too much wealth got into too few hands we still became tough. And broke the stalemate in WWI and led us to victotry.

Then we retreated and were it not a backwater in no position to fight back when Japan attacked us. The Isolationists that put us in that position were shoved aside and Americans responded with troops and industrial capability that astounded the world. Especially our enemies. Few (Japan’s Yamamoto being an exception) foresaw we could do as much as we did but had he lived I’ll bet even he would have been surprised we were were able to get our act together so quickly.

We emerged as the leader of the free world. In economics. Manufacturing. Scientific development. You name it. We even finally started to address our Original Sin of slavery by passing landmark Civil and Voting Rights legislation. Vietnam was a stain but a lot of our allies let themselves get caught up in it so they couldn’t be too critical. Our institutions held through Watergate. For all our flaws we led the world to the defeat and dissolution of the old USSR. We were poised to make the 21st century another American century and despite the calamity of Bush 43’s ‘War on Terror’ electing Barack Obama by convincing margins twice suggested to the world it was safe leaving leadership in U.S. hands.

Then came Trump. Worse, against all logic and reason he made it back into the White House for a second term. The result, with apologies to Herman’s Hermits and their ear wash song “Second verse, WORSE than the first” But we’ve been on the deck before as I’ve noted. We’ve picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off and gotten back to work. Let’s not kid ourselves though. It’s going to take more work than ever to repair the damage that’s being done and the scars will always be visible. A warning to the world that never again should they place the kind of faith they once did in this country so many gave so much to build.

For now just prepare yourself for Trump to chop off another limb from our country. But when you encounter someone who sticks up for what Trumpty intends to do hit them between the eyes with the scenario I laid out when I started writing.  I mean SLAM them with it, and how they’d feel if Xi or some other powerful foreign leader was sitting down with Putin to negotiate away a big chunk of our country. And Canada too!

Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. We work hard to get you analysis that you will not find in the mainstream media, but all media have been hit hard since the big companies have gobbled up and monopolized commentary. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula
