Playing Send In the Clowns as the U.S. delegation and Trump arrived for a signing ceremony? Ouch! Yet that’s what happened when Trump, who has as we know been obsessed with Greenland showed up with Rubio and others to sign a defense agreement.
No, you haven’t been linked over to The Onion. This article from The Mirror US describes what took place and it’s worth your time to read the whole thing. It opens with “Donald Trump has seemingly been ruthlessly mocked while signing his long-awaited Greenland deal, after a particular choice of song was played before he entered.” I can’t help but wonder what went through what’s left of Trump’s mind as he stood there within earshot waiting to make his grand entrance. Even HE knew his ‘bigly’ moment hadn’t just been stepped on but stomped into smithereens as the most famous song Send In the Clowns from classic Broadway musical played as his team led by Little Marco Rubio, then himself and the other leaders entered the room for the signing ceremony:
A number of songs were played during the wait, but the last one before their entrance could have been seen as particularly poignant. It was ‘Send in the Clowns’, from the 1973 musical A Little Night Music.
The lyrics can be heard ringing through the live feed, which are: “Don’t you love farce? My fault, I fear. I thought that you’d want what I want. Sorry, my dear. But where are the clowns? Quick, send in the clowns. Don’t bother, they’re here.”
And Rubio? Little Marco as Trump long ago dubbed him has Presidential ambitions of his own and the mocking was directed as much at him and his ambition to convince Trump to take over Cuba as at Trump. If I’m not mistaken Vance wasn’t there. So he and every other GOP 2028 wannabe will be playing this tweet:

Make no mistake however. The playing of that particular song at that particular time was the world’s leadership giving Trump and the United States the middle finger. That’s while my mixed emotions of amusement and sadness are heavily weighted towards the latter. For all the damage Trump did to our standing in the world in his first term, and then Biden doing so much to repair things the world, via the United Nations is no longer willing to cut us any slack. Our leadership in winning WWII bought us the chance to build a world order in which we became the unquestioned leader of the free world. Because of Trump we no longer hold that status. Worse, it will take multiple generations of never again allowing someone even half as awful as Trump into the White House that we can get even close to the way we were once regarded.
This was no accident or “oops’ from those who staged this event at the U.N. When it comes to diplomacy and protocol the staff there knows exactly what they are doing when arranging meetings/ceremonies for every world leader. This was an EPIC trolling of Trump and sadly, the United States and sanctioned by the leadership of the U.N. and worse, few countries would have objected had they known in advance.
Still, given that Trump has made as much a mess of world affairs as he has here at home in the United States one can’t help but wonder if the Secretary General had been getting hints, if not outright requests to take Trump down a notch or two. And that the U.N. leadership has seen enough countries starting to tell Trump to ‘get stuffed’ that it was time to send a clear signal to Trump he and the U.S. no longer rule the roost.
The U.N. found itself with a perfect opportunity to deliver a message. Trump as everyone (both here and abroad) has lusted over gaining control of Greenland almost as much as he used to lust over boinking his own daughter Ivanka. They knew that although the agreement doesn’t cede control of Greenland to Trump he surely planned to make it sound that way. In truth it’s an update of the joint efforts by NATO of which the U.S., Greenland and Denmark belong to to ensure Russia, China and others know means attacking it means taking on NATO – and that while Trump might not be counted on to honor Article 5 he will do so with Greenland.
For that reason having a ceremony to mark the signing of the agreement was a good idea on the U.N.’s part. At the same time they decided to let us and the world know things will be different from now on. Half of American voters chose someone other than Trump (he didn’t get 50% of the total vote) but it wasn’t enough. The world watched as we all did on Jan. 6 and were stunned that Trump wasn’t overwhelmingly beaten in 2024. So, via the U.N. they made it clear they DON’T ‘love the farce’ but have decided too many Americans do to give us the deference we earned over so many decades.
As I’ve said it will be a long time coming to gain the kind of respect in the world we could and should have. We can make a good start by trouncing Republicans (who’ve shamelessly enabled Trump) in the midterms. However that at most will be a down payment. We need a Democratic Congress to start a beat-down, and enough Republicans to help out to neuter Trump in the time he has left. Then another overwhelming in in 2028, and 2032. So, if you haven’t been doing so get off your butt and get to work.
If like me you don’t have money to donate to candidates you can still make GOTV calls, knock on doors, send texts and just talk to people to get them to vote Democratic. Show the world the clowns have been kicked out and that we’re by god locking the door.
