Thank God that the courageous men and women who fight in World War II are honored by other people because they can forget the sitting president of the United States this D-Day. Maybe Trump doesn’t know it’s D-Day, although I can’t imagine his aides being that bad. Or more likely he just doesn’t care. Here was his first Truth Social post and it’s all about him.

That’s what he tells himself, how the whole world loves him. His world revolves around his fantasy life. There have thankfully been reports of other wonderful things done to honor veterans. Charlie Sykes wrote today about raising $250,000 to fly families and veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial. It was a heartwarming story. Sad that journalists commemorate this occasion in our lives and the sitting president ignores it, but it’s scarcely a surprise. Shocking, yes, surprising no.
No new revelation nor surprise here, we all know what a POS the current White House resident and wannabe dictator with no taste is. It’s like, “So what else is new?”
None of this is surprising. It continues to indicate his MALIGNANT narcissism. He will NEVER CHANGE. He will progress to get worse in his self-agrandizement. What he didn’t get – those were men cheering behind him. Ummmmmm it’s gay price month.

Of course he made it about himself. Appallingly, those who own the rights to actual movies that focus on D-Day have made goddamned sure that it won’t be remembered. Yes, the film adaptation of Cornelius Ryan’s Book The Longest Day took some license with actual events and included some cheesy moments but for much of my life it was standard viewing to mark the day. NO ONE is showing it on normal TV channels or even movie channels on cable. There’s another terrific movie I recall from a couple of years ago about the planning that had Tom Selleck (sans mustache btw) playing Eisenhower. Great cast and a gripping narrative that actually hewed close to actual events and interactions leading up to the invasion. I saw it just once. It seems to have disappeared into oblivion.
Yes, we’ve seen war movies including some WWII ones this weekend and even both Midway movies (the one from the mid 1970s and the more recent one) which had some cheesy crap added but still mark the epic battle that took place six months after Pearl Harbor that turned the tide of the war in the Pacific. Yet D-Day goes by today (and tomorrow) without ANYONE showing either of two movies that should be required viewing in history classes.

And no, as compelling as the Omaha landing scene in Saving Private Ryan was it wasn’t the focus of the movie. It also only focused on a small group of troops and not the wider battle. As a jarhead who fell in love with history when I was in school I learned more about goings on in the Pacific theater than most Americans I view D-Day differently than most. So many of the battles in the Pacific teetered on the edge of disaster because Washington (and the country, made up of mostly European ancestors that took over Native American lands) wanted every resource devoted to Europe. The attitude was that Japan and the Pacific could just fucking wait their turn. However Nimitz and McCarthur were determined to take the fight forward and made do with what they were allotted.
Most of the key battles in the Pacific took place on the ocean (i.e. Midway) or on small islands that are largely inaccessable today. Only one or two flights in and out a week in many cases. But it was necessary to take them and the cost to both us and Japan in lives was enormous. The Pacific is so vast the geography baffles people and that’s why so little of what happened there is remembered.
However D-Day took place on the beaches of Normandy and people understand THAT. Plus those able to afford to travel can visit the place. While the landing beaches themselves are mostly closed off people can stand above on the bluffs, especially Omaha and Utah (where the worst fighting happened) and look out over them. With thousands of graves of those who gave their lives to look at by merely turning around.
That’s why it’s criminal that movies DEVOTED to the overall D-Day landings aren’t shown this weekend. In fact it’s been several years since I’ve seen The Longest Day.
And I’m convinced it’s because the American Oligarchy who wants a fascist government they control don’t want people remembering what my parent’s generation did to free the world from fascist rule!
