Two ways to call this shot: either the Orange Oracle has seen the vision for the Republican cult that he still controls and he’s issued an edict on his toy blog to his high priests Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell to stonewall the Capitol riot commission. Or, McConnell had already decided what his path forward was, to obstruct since that’s how he’s wired, and Trump merely got word of it and is playing big shot on his toy blog. McConnell announced Wednesday that the commission was “slanted and unbalanced” and “laughably partisan” and he plans to oppose it. So now it’s official, it’s going to be a full fledged partisan war.
McConnell thinks the commission is superfluous.
“So there is, has been, and will continue to be no shortage of robust investigations by two separate branches of the federal government. It’s not at all clear what new facts yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress.”
“House Democrats have handled this partisan effort in bad faith going right back to the beginning. From initially offering a laughably partisan starting point to continuing to insist on various other features under the hood that are designed to centralize control over the commission’s process and its conclusions in Democratic hands.”
There’s two ways to call this shot, too. One is that McConnell is doing his usual obstruction because that’s his default position, and the other is that he knows what the commission might find and he absolutely does not want it to come out.

Commissions are appointed to study events of great significance all the time, the Warren commission, 9/11 commission and others. There is no way to argue that the Capitol riot was not an event of great significance. It would be a break with precedent to not investigate it further via a bipartisan commission. This is going to get very heated and that’s putting it mildly.
Do you suppose McConnell will insist on a, “fry anyone”, in the Republican party that partakes in this new commission, even though it would be a stand-alone action, based on everything video/audio, evidence files already collected? The structure as you mentioned is standard practice, so what voice does the Turtle, no longer the majority leader have to intercept this plan?
McConnell should just sit down and STFU, communicating with the has-been awful Trump outside normal channels of REAL government employees, not to mention, ELECTED office persons is at once Ludacris and a tip off that Mc Connell cannot be trusted to vote FOR the people any more …

Boy,Benghazi, which was certainly investigated a zillion times by the fascist Republicans in charge, was not carried out by Americans. This time the insurrection, the worst attack on the Capitol since the 18th century, deserves at least a bi-partisan investigation since is was US citizens radicalized by trump, that did the horrible damage. Maybe its time for a commission to investigate Moscow Mitch! As in dig into every aspect of his life, especially his ties to Russia and Russian oligarchs! I wonder what possibly treasonous crimes would be discovered!!

There is no way Mad Moscow Mitcxh would ever allow such a commission to be formed. After all, far too many members and associates of the GQP stand to have a public spotlight shone upon their actions, including their members in Congress who actively abetted the atack (or lied brazenly saying that it was just a normal tour occurence)
He may be trying to defend as many GQP as possible, to maintain their seats in the legislature. I think that’s the main reason he’s running interference.

McTurtle doesn’t need to be told. Unless it involves jamming through wingnut judges, that’s all he knows how to do. Though I have concerns that a congressional commission will result in more power given to the security state. 9/11 gave us DHS and The Patriot Act. I shudder to think what this would spawn.
