File this under U for both unique and unbelievable. So far as I know, no presidential candidate has ever asked his running mate to debate his opponent for him. This is yet another first, in Trump world. Here’s the backstory. J.D. Vance is out campaigning today and he doesn’t even know what the date is (he asked a reporter) and he thinks it’s “93 days” until Election Day. Wrong. It’s 89 days. And they used to say Joe Biden didn’t know where he was or what was going on.
Now here’s the spin that Team Trump is throwing at the wall and it’s not sticking. Vance had a vice presidential debate scheduled with Kamala Harris next week, August 13. He wants to keep that debate going — with Kamala, who is no longer the vice presidential candidate. Vance said that he didn’t know if Tim Walz would still be the vice presidential candidate because “he’s got a lot of skeletons that are coming out of the closet today.” And then he opined that Harris “probably doesn’t even know if she’ll still be the [presidential] nominee.” (Click the blue link if you want to hear this idiocy on tape.) There is no doubt in anybody’s mind that the Democratic ticket is set, period, carved in stone but since Trump made that idiotic comment the other day that Joe Biden would “demand” the nomination back, that’s how they’re playing it for now, that the Democrats are wandering blindly through the wilderness — while stadiums are being packed.

Doesn’t that do your soul good? Back to the switcheroo that Trump is trying to sell on the American people: J.D. debates Kamala, because that’s how it was set up initally, when they were both VP candidates, and that’s the loophole Vance is trying to worm his way through. Plus, added bonus, that way Trump doesn’t have to debate Kamala and make a flaming ass out of himself. Also, that would take J.D. off the hook from debating Tim Walz, whom he criticized as weird for shaking his wife’s hand after last night’s rally. J.D. Vance doesn’t know those people. A handshake may have personal significance to them, like “put it there, partner, we’re in business now,” that kind of thing. But when you’re desperate, you do whatever you can to make the other guy look bad.
Bottom line, Vance is going to have to debate Walz next week, end of discussion. And Trump is going to have to show up and debate Kamala or Kuh-MAL-uh, or Kamabla, or whatever childish taunt Trump’s 8-year-old mentality has dreamt up this week. Or, he’ll be deemed a chicken. And even the MAGAs will deem him a chicken, although I have no doubt but that the facts will be presented to the hardcore MAGAs in such a way as to make it seem that Kamala avoided the debate.
Anybody who listens to anything other than Fox News will probably hear that Kamala showed up as scheduled for the presidential debate on September 10 and Trump wouldn’t appear. Expect Trump to say, “The debate’s September 4 on Fox News, if she didn’t come, that means she won’t debate,” and some idiots will probably buy that. But not enough to get him elected, let’s put it that way.
Trump got elected in 2016 because the Republican party backed him. I have personally spoken to Republicans who have confessed that they voted for Trump in 2016 and came to immediately regret it and did not vote for him in 2020. And they will not vote for him in 2024, I would imagine. Trump’s done nothing to win any voters back.
