You almost have to wonder if Donald Trump is doing this on purpose. He fired a shot over Chip Roy’s bow Monday, calling him a RINO and inviting any interested Republicans in Texas who might be interested in Roy’s congressional seat to contact Trump at once. Certainly sounds serious, doesn’t it, when the MAGA Messiah is openly calling to get rid of you?
But once you factor in that the filing deadline for any kind of a primary happened over a week ago, December 11, it’s either Trump not knowing something that basic (which is par for the course) or Trump making big noises to scare not only Roy but anybody else who might have the audacity to endorse another candidate for president besides him.
Where it truly gets comical is that Roy’s “crime” is in supporting Ron DeSantis. Realistically, DeSantis poses no threat to Trump. The latest RealClearPolitics polling average shows Donald Trump in first place by 50 points – not polling at 50%, but beating narrowly-second-placed DeSantis by 50 points. Despite facing 91 felony charges in four separate indictments, Trump’s current polling average among GOP voters is 62.9%. DeSantis comes in at just 12.1%. Haley is just half a percentage point below DeSantis, at 11.6%, according to Raw Story.
Nevertheless, Trump posted this: “Has any smart and energetic Republican in the Great State of Texas decided to run in the Primary against RINO Congressman Chip Roy. For the right person, he is very beatable,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “If interested, let me know!!!”
Roy may be very beatable in 2026 but for right now his seat couldn’t be safer, at least insofar as a primary challenge is concerned. Who knows what will happen on Election Night? One thing that Trump has proven definitively in the previous three elections is that hitching your wagon to his star does not guarantee a win. Ask Herschel Walker or Mehmet Oz. Maybe that’s why he’s upset at Roy, that Roy dares to challenge him directly and let it be publicly known that he supports another candidate besides Trump.

What is truly tragic about all of this is that Trump does not belong in politics at all, let alone at the presidential level. He’s not a team player, never has been. He doesn’t know how to work his way up through the ranks of anything, never had to. And what is most tragic of all, is Trump doesn’t want to do the work or shoulder the responsibility of the presidency. He hated the job. He only wanted it in the first place for the attention and the prestige. It was a complete bother that he was actually expected to show up for work in the morning and that he couldn’t watch TV as much as he wanted.
But he’s got no choice but to try to get back into power again. That’s the only way he can outrun his legal problems, at least in theory.
Trump will comfortably slide into the GOP nomination, minus some incredible intervening, superseding event, like him choking on a cheeseburger or drowning in a bowl of chicken soup. Then we’ll see if he manages to persuade America to give fascism a whirl as a system of government in lieu of democracy.
That we are even having a conversation this ludicrous never ceases to boggle my mind.
Meanwhile, get ready to watch Ron DeSantis crash and burn. He’s about to be held accountable for the mismanagement of funds in his campaign and coming just a few weeks before the Iowa Caucus, this is a disaster. Trump should be eating this up with a spoon, rather than threatening to go after Chip Roy for supporting DeSantis.
Stay tuned, the crazy level is about to ratchet up a couple of decibels.
