Running a campaign for somebody like Donald Trump is a bit like trying to cover for the excesses of a perpetually drunken spouse. One night the spouse might be out there in the bar telling everybody that the next round is on him, and the next night he might be out there betting the family farm on a hand of poker. The job of the mate of such a spouse would be to 1. prevent his worse excesses and failing that, 2. gently do damage control and walk back the craziest things said. That is exactly what happened this week when Trump suggested that foreign students “have a green card attached to their diploma.” Fox News:

Former President Trump’s campaign walked back a promise that the former president would “automatically” award green cards to migrants after they graduate from college.

“President Trump has made it clear that on day one of his new administration, he’s going to shut down the border and launch the largest mass deportation effort of illegal aliens in history,” Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement last week, according to a New York Post report, noting that the former president would include an “aggressive vetting process” and “exclude all communists, radical Islamists, Hamas supporters, America haters and public charges.”

The comments come after Trump’s appearance on the “All-in Podcast” last week, where the former president outlined an idea to give all foreign college graduates a green card with their diploma. […]

The proposal received immediate pushback, with Center for Immigration Studies Executive Director Mark Krikorian telling the New York Post that such a handout was “a cockamamie proposal” that would prompt a “fire hose of foreign cash” by “stapling a green card to the diploma” of a U.S. college graduate.

“If someone earns a Ph.D. at a university in a hard science, I personally will drive to their house and give them a green card,” Krikorian said. “The issue is any foreign college graduate, even from a bogus two-year master’s program or gender studies [major], would get a green card.”

It will be interesting to see if anybody mentions Trump’s empty promise in Nevada, to stop the taxing of tipped income. And it will be especially intriguing to see what happens after Thursday’s debate, assuming that Trump keeps making wild promises that he can’t keep. Or, maybe he’ll just talk about sharks and batteries all night. Or, maybe tell Joe Biden to his face that he can’t put two sentences together.

We don’t know what’s in store but we do know it’s going to be a wild week with the Colorado primary on Tuesday and the presidential debate on Thursday. We could be looking at this week being a game changer. Stay tuned.

  1. Now, this “damage control” done by Von Shitzinpants’ team is a bit off the mark to put it mildly. Foreign students do not illegally cross the border to attend university. They apply and are accepted as foreign students. In fact, even the ne’er-do-wells who attend higher education institutions or get training and education and are from other countries STILL must apply and be accepted in order to attend.

Do illegal migrants who do cross the border attend our institutions of higher learning? Perhaps although it is more likely their children will after attending american elem/secondary schools.

Look, I have a couple of bachelor degrees and a couple of master’s degrees and I have attended many classes with students from all over the world (it was actually a great experience btw). Not a single one of them crossed the border, illegally, to attend. Every one of them flew in from their native countries after having been accepted. I get it when Von Shitzinpants says dumb-ass thing-you’d think his handlers would be at least a tiny bit smarter.
