When it comes to 2022, once again it’s the grassroots state Democratic incumbents that are showing the way. The GOP clearly has no agenda, no plans, and no platform to run on. Their entire platform is a healthy dose of white grievance, and culture wars, especially against Trans kids.
Many Democratic strategists are swearing that it is a fatal mistake for the Democrats to get into a culture war with the GOP. That’s their turf, and where they’re comfortable. And Democrats can’t win that battle, because you’re never going to change a Trombies mind.
Mostly I agree with them. Earlier today on MSNBC, Democratic pollster Fernand Armand, who lives in Florida, said that Governor Ron Pissantis has been such a financial disaster for Floridians that the Democrats should campaign on their positive accomplishments, and highlight how disastrous Pissantis has been for the economy. And I agree. But only so far.
Because an election isn’t just about rabid Democrats and rabid Republicans. There is a whole mushy middle of soft Republicans, soft Democrats, and independents out there that are waiting to be convinced one way or the other. And who knows that’s ringing their bells? You can’t just totally cede the battle over the culture wars without even to rebut it.
You’ll need to forgive me, but I can’t recall the actual individual names, and my eyes won’t take another search. But there are state Democrats out there who are countering the GOP bullshit in the best possible way. They are embarrassing them in public, from the podiums of the legislature. And from where I’m sitting, it’s working.
A Missouri gay Democratic congressman rose to the floor to object a virulently anti gay bill aimed at children. He spoke to his own struggles as a child, trying to blend into a world he wasn’t part of. And then he turned to the sponsor of the bill, and sauteed him in oil with garlic, You know, I know that your own brother is gay, and while the family supports him, he was afraid to come out and tell you, for fear of your reaction. You know what? If I was your brother, I’d be terrified to tell you too! Because of pieces of crap like this! I think every day, not of myself, but of all of the children that are still trapped, who haven’t had the courage or support to start their journey. This bill may pass, but I guarantee you you’ll lose in the long run.
And then there was the Michigan state Senate Democrat who objected publicly to a harsh anti gay-trans youth bill. The bill’s sponsor singled her out in a fundraising email, calling her a pro pedophile groomer. The Democrat took to the floor to roast her over an open fire, I know why you did what you did. Because I’m a strong, independent, Christian suburban mother. Your whole scheme counts on you spinning this as if you’re supporting Christian women and families. But that won’t work if another Christian parent stands up to oppose you. So you try to marginalize me, to turn me into one of them. I hope you slept well, I hope you made a few dollars, but it won’t change the eventual outcome.
This is how you fight the culture war. You find a microphone, and you hold them publicly up to scorn and ridicule for their ridiculous positions, using facts to fight them. Those speeches made national news, so you know they got local air time statewide. And they exposed the soft underbelly of the GOP’s culture war that they want to keep out of sight. It’s all about the bigotry and hatred of others.
At least one Democrat seems to have already gotten the memo. Laborious MTG took to the floor today to avow that the Ukrainians were actually Nazis, and neo-Nazis, and we shouldn’t be funding the Ukrainians when Russia was trying to get rid or Nazis. Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin took to the floor and exploded like a neutron bomb, We are here today to debate giving defensive aid for the independent Republic of Ukraine to defend themselves against naked Russian aggression. The congresswoman has raised allegations of the Ukrainians being Nazi’s, and a threat to Russia. I’m not prepared to take that assertion on faith. I want to know what evidence and proof the congresswoman has to back up her allegations. This is too important for politics.
Look, the GOP has nothing to run on in November other than white grievance and culture wars. The Democrats have a positive story to tell about how they have improved the lives of all citizens, nationwide, and they need to forcefully tell it. But we have no way to know what persuadable voters are tuning into. You can’t just abandon the culture war battlefield entirely. And the way to go is to call out the GOPtards for their ridiculous claims and positions, and hold them up to scorn.
Dems will never learn. If they were capable of such a feat they would have super-majorities in the House and Senate and would never worry about losing the W.H. because they’d have the vast majority of voters behind them. They are incapable of putting forth a coherent message, will not caucus for shit, and because of their constant disorder are a gift not just for ‘pubes, but for the moronic ‘pubes. How else could shit like Bobo, Margie Kooky Pants, Rojo, Howler Monkey….get into high public office? You do not get garbage like that unless you have the other side incapable of messaging and governing effectively. It isn’t as if the majority of citizens aren’t on their side on all issues. Say what you want about Yertle, he at least knows what it takes to not only remain in power himself, but keep his party there as well. Any and every time dems hold the reins they hand them over in four years or less.
We need third party candidates–NOW. Diluting the power both parties hold might just save us from ourselves, ‘pube evil, and democratic incompetence. Our two party system has put us where we are today-one gnat’s ass-hole hair away from an authoritarian country.
My husband showed me a large portion of Raskin’s speech about MTG. In it, he kept referring to her as the “gentlewoman”. I think that was very generous of him. I would have referred to her as the representative. He definitely called her out on all her ridiculousness about Ukraine and Nazis.
That woman swallowed Putin’s assertions of “denazification” whole. Remember that Trump said he was a genius and his strategy was brilliant.
Are there Nazis in Ukraine. Probably a small number. Hey,we have them here too. They were all over the place at Fat Donnie’s worship services and at the Capitol on 2/6. They voted for Donnie Donuts. Before you attack another country cleanse your own ranks first.
