Y’all. This wasn’t funny from the start, let alone with repetition. I don’t know, and don’t particularly understand why, this was done. As a matter of fact, it’s not just unfunny. But it’s insulting to a *lot* of people. What in the hell was he (they?) thinking??!! This was an honor? Ha, no, not hardly, not even close. Not even close. And it should have been taken down after its 15 minutes of notoriety.
I am talking about the picture of tRump as Pope. NincomPope. Had you guessed that? Possibly? I just shook my head when I saw that picture come out. It spoke to me of willful blindness and an attempt at humor. I certainly didn’t think it was an honor! Come on now, Agent Orange as *Pope*??!! You’ve taken it too damn far. I’m agnostic/pagan, and my reaction was “Ugh”. I can’t believe he did that!
How can he not realize how that looks? It’s an insult to our very large Catholic population and to Catholics around the world. You can bet that picture got spread far and wide when it was first put up. We’re in the information, highly electronic age. Nearly everyone has a computer, right? Or an app like Facebook on their personal cell phone. Heck, smartphones are better computers than the 8088 that I was first learning to use! So the thing got passed along everywhere, or people were told about it, and went to see in some form or fashion, and that was it. Everywhere. I saw this in at least 3, and likely more, articles. It’s all over the place.
What was the point of this? An ”honor”? No. Is it El Presidente Imbécil thinking of something stupid and a vain wish to be Pope? The man isn’t even Catholic! You can’t even be considered if you are not a baptized Catholic! I have an idea that he thought it would give him even more power than he has now, being President. That’s *really* not a reason or even a possibility. Just the thought … YUCK.
I’m pretty sure that someone from the US will be part of the conclave, but I don’t know if my memory is faulty and I mixed it up with something else at oh dark hundred this morning. I had a little trouble getting to sleep. I should not try to work on a serious piece starting when I have only been awake for half an hour.
Really, yes, it is an insult to Catholics across the world. It’s also an insult to the late, great Pope Francis. It’s as if he was saying something nasty, like “I’ll be an even better Pope” or some shizzle like that. I don’t know who came up with this idea, but they should be smacked for it. I’ll lay odds on who came up with this idea, and wouldn’t be surprised if it *wasn’t* Stephen Miller. I really cannot *stand* that man. He makes me scream every time he opens his mouth. Of course, that could be the point, but still!
So, the actual point to this babbling is that the picture with tRump as Pope is disgusting. It’s not funny. It’s not an honor. It’s disgusting. It shouldn’t have happened. I think part of the problem is that we sometimes forget that these are not serious people. They are clowns and idiots. The problem is that they are in positions of power and we are forced to take their decisions seriously. Nothing more to add, but shaking my head, also.
Yea, sometimes I *do* forget, and I appreciate the reminder! No idea *how* I forget this, but I do, until the next stupid thing makes the news, that is. We never have very long to wait for that.
I’m glad you wrote this, Susan, because I’ve been thinking about this image ever since. It’s one of those things that, once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Yes, of course it is blasphemous, crass, and insulting. But like you, what I couldn’t understand was “What was he thinking?” Because, as stated by the Catholic bishops, it’s not clever and it’s not funny. And even if Trump thought it was, surely he ought to know that nearly all Catholics (the only exceptions being bootlickers like Vance) would find it extremely offensive.
But then today it hit me. No, he does not think this is offensive. He really thinks the idea of him as pope is just beautiful, not considering that he is utterly and totally ineligible, not considering that he is incapable of fulfilling any of the responsibilities, which he has no conception of anyway, but just focusing on his fantasy of having the love and total respect of millions. That’s what he finds beautiful. And since he is an extreme narcissist, he can’t imagine that anyone would disagree (unless they were “very bad people).”
In short, I came to the conclusion that Trump has gone completely mad. Over the last nine years he has said and done many things that might lead one to think so, but for me this was the real incontravertible evidence. If you took this AI-generated image, then had the AI add a padded cell in the background, along with a few men in white coats, then it would finally make sense.
It made me super upset, and I’m not even Catholic. I’m … you could say … mmmm. pagan. But this, holy cow, made me RAGE. I didn’t want to believe it and had no choice. It was such a horrible thing to do. It wasn’t til your explanation of “beautiful” that I was able to move past a little bit of the RAGE and into a better understanding. It still bothers me just so much!

He has to have gone completely around the bend, as you pointed out. So we have an insane president to survive the next 3 years and some months. I have NO idea how we’re going to come out of it. I have no idea *IF* we’re going to come out of it. I’d really like to run to another country (I have open offers for places to stay with different friends), but I can’t leave my mom and my in-laws. Lost my dad almost 15 years ago (November), and I’m still devastated. He’d be horrified to see what my mom has turned into and what our country has turned into. The only outlook I have for the future is survival. What the hell else can we do besides support our Democrats? Apologies for the cynicism.
