This is real. I cut and paste it from Truth Social, it’s up there. I guess this is a reaction to Matt Gaetz nominating Donald Trump for Speaker of the House this afternoon, as the continuing self-gelding of Kevin McCarthy takes place.
Social media erupted in laughter that now Trump is losing elections that he never ran in.
Matt Gaetz and Trump apparently think that this is a total lark. The government is shut down right now, frozen. A story broke earlier today that because of this gridlock in the House lawmakers are not privy to intelligence briefs and this branch of government is hamstrung right now. But it’s all performance art and yucks and chuckles. Marge Greene posted this to reassure the MAGAs.

He’s second in line, but why quibble? Friends, we live in a world where Republicans elect high school dropouts to Congress and put judges on the bench who don’t even have law degrees. This era will go down in history as when kakistocracy came to America and the movie Idiocracy will be hailed as a prophetic documentary.
This makes complete sense. Water finding its own level and so forth.

And there’s this. Maybe this is what prompted Trump to put the ridiculous meme on his site.

I have no words. How anybody sane or decent can vote Republican, with this going on, is beyond me. But I guess this is the new normal. We have warring factions in the House.
Make no mistake, this is kakistocracy. This is no longer a joke. To quote Mona Charen of the Bulwark, this ‘“is not between the extremists and the establishment. It’s between two camps of extremists.” The grownups are gone: excommunicated or self-exiled. What’s left is MTG and George Santos vs. Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar — nothing but deplorables as far as the eye can see. And whatever happens now, the extremists/grifters/crazies/
Color me gobsmacked. I seriously didn’t think it was going to get this weird. Now I’m wondering just how weird it can get.

trust the former guy to choose the most offensive way possible to express his inner toddler.
He’s made history with this one meme. My gut feeling is that hundreds of years from now, school children, in the Civics class of the future, will be reading about this era and THAT is the image that they will have of Donald Trump and this point in history.
One thing I missed in this whole fiasco: If electing the Speaker has to be done before ANY “business” can be done in the House, who was it that swore in all the members of the House? If NONE of these people has officially been sworn in, then how can they possibly elect a Speaker?
I read a (way-too brief) article on “The Hill” that (supposedly) explains why the vote can be held without a Speaker’s being elected (and, honestly, it does NOT do that) but I think there really needs to be a rule to prevent this kind of fiasco from ever potentially happening again. Something along the lines of “Only returning incumbents may participate in the selection of a new Speaker.” (Perhaps a modification could then be added so that after the Speaker swears in the newly elected members, then a new election for the Speaker will be held in the event of the majority’s switching hands.)
Either that or allow the outgoing Speaker to remain in charge until a new Speaker is chosen.
In either event (and really showing GOP hypocrisy on voting), newly elected members shouldn’t be voting on a Speaker until they’ve been sworn into office.
they aren’t sworn in. they are all congresspeople-elects. there is no legislative branch ATM. per the Constitution, they have to elect the speaker first
I have just read what I assume is the same article on The Hill (by Jared Gans) that you read. I share your reaction to it. I have written Mr. Gans on Twitter to ask him to answer the question that his article purported in the headline to answer. I will try to pass that information on, if I can figure out how to do so.
Something that doesn’t seem to get spotlighted nearly enough, imho, is that this fiasco is a self inflicted gunshot wound from our fellow Americans. I mean, they’re the ones who installed these ass clowns here into one of our three branches of government. I don’t know what their motivation is, or what they hope to accomplish, but we’re officially in gridlock for the next two years unless Biden can trick some of them into preserving our union or maybe just doing the right thing. The Freedumb Caucus is ready and willing to burn this country down to prove their point, whatever that may be.
