Intelligence analyst and strategist, Eric Garland (not Merrick, definitely Eric) is a master at translating Hill hearings into plain-speak. He has a unique ability to read between the lines then condense a speech to its essence. The resulting plain-speak is raw truth – and very very funny.

This time Eric Garland is translating the House Oversight Committee hearing: The Capitol Insurrection: Unexplained Delays and Unanswered Questions. Because the hearing is very lengthy, I’ve divided this tweet thread translation into 3 parts.

Eric begins his thread with a link to the YouTube recording of the full hearing.

In the Chair is Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) who begins the hearing with her opening statement.

More importantly for legal purposes, it was an insurrection. (I know this because I looked up the legal definition of insurrection.) So did Chairwoman Maloney.

Next up is Jim Comer (R-KY) who wants to talk about anything but the subject matter of the hearing. This non-answering tactic is usually called “pivoting”. When Comer does it it’s called “last resort” because he’s got nothin’ else.

Comer also seems to think that the more he talks, the more someone will believe him. He’s deluded.

Next up: Lt Gen Walter Piatt, Director of the Army Staff, Pentagon.

Next! Oh look, it’s Charles Flynn. Looks like Chuck may have a lot in common with his brother Moscow Mike.

  1. Comer should have been ruled out of order, because it’s not a hearing on any of that. The chair should be in charge of this, not letting them run on.

    • Perhaps Maloney decided that Comer being completely out of his depth and making himself look ridiculous was a self-own punishment. He certainly wasn’t doing the Republicans any favours.
