A formal cooperation agreement has been in the works for some time with an ex-girlfriend of Matt Gaetz, a Capitol Hill staffer whose relations with the congressman go back to 2017, a time period of great scrutiny. Today it was announced that the woman has agreed to cooperate. No specific details as to identity are available at this time, but this could be a situation where the agreement to cooperate was obtained because the woman wants to save her own skin. A lot of people in Matt Gaetz’ orbit are looking to save their own skins lately. CNN:

Information from Greenberg in the lead-up to his plea agreement has already helped investigators further their scrutiny of the congressman. As he worked towards a plea deal with federal prosecutors in recent months, Greenberg told investigators that Gaetz and at least two other men had sexual contact with a 17-year-old girl, CNN has learned. Gaetz has repeatedly denied he ever had sex with a minor or paid for sex.
“Congressman Gaetz doesn’t seem to be named nor referenced in Mr. Greenberg’s plea,” said Gaetz spokesman Harlan Hill. “Congressman Gaetz has never had sex with a minor and has never paid for sex. Mr. Greenberg has now pleaded guilty to falsely accusing someone else of sex with a minor. That person was innocent. So is Congressman Gaetz.”
That is the mantra you’re going to hear; Gaetz is as clear as the driven snow, he just happens to be best buds with some of the most corrupt politicians and political characters, (yes, Roger, we’re talking about you) in Florida and nationally. And Gaetz wants you to know he’s not like Greenberg. No, Sir. He has gone out of his way to let it be known that he, like everybody else, holds Greenberg in contempt.
Gaetz and his representatives have attacked Greenberg’s credibility in recent days, pointing to the fact that Greenberg admitted in his plea agreement to falsely accusing someone of having sex with a minor.
“If the government is brave enough to call Joel Greenberg as a witness, [Marc] Mukasey and [Isabelle] Kirshner are champing at the bit to take him on,” a person close to Gaetz’s defense team said, referring to the congressman’s two high-profile attorneys.
“We’re ready for a fair fight on the facts and the law. Anywhere. Anytime. But the steady stream of leaks by anonymous sources undermines the integrity of this process. It is simply and unequivocally improper,” the attorneys said in a statement to CNN.
Asked earlier this week about Greenberg’s readiness to potentially testify against Gaetz, Fritz Scheller, Greenberg’s defense attorney, said, “Mr. Greenberg has pled guilty pursuant to a plea agreement and has certain requirements and obligations on him and he intends to honor that.”
We can only assume that those obligations and requirements include singing about his dear former running buddy Matt Gaetz. Meanwhile, Gaetz is down in Arizona, proselytizing the Big Lie. Maybe he thinks the magic of Trumpism will save him. Either that, or he figures that the hole he’s in now is so deep, what does it matter what he does?

  1. Hopefully, this missive means the technical difficulties are over? And that you are better, (at least a bit), Ursula?

    • I’ve been going nuts the past few days. I was in the ER on Monday, I finally saw my doctor on Thursday and now I’m waiting for a physical therapy appointment. And while all that was going on, the website was sick, too. My poor website and I crashed the same week.

  2. Ditto, server errors have been monstrous stalls to access and though, I completely understand the complexities of web structures, I was beginning to think I would never get back in here …
But, here I am and reading Ursula …. GREAT!!

Matt, the stupid, Gaetz, and others seem to be floating on the latest garbage dump in the ocean from the big cities on the East coast … just enough corruption and idiocy showing all the time to presume their guilt in spite of their tepid claims … if the idiot had any sense at all, he would not be caught in such damning situations, but you know, his grandstanding personality, so close to the giant fart Trump …

    • The question is how many others are on this same funeral pyre…and did they have sense enough to NOT use Venmo to pay their pimp Greenberg.

    • Being here and writing is taking care of me. I’m addicted to this stuff. We’re not called political junkies for nothing.

      • It seems someone is greasing the rails some somewhere … there HAS to be a pinnacle of power and wealth doing some background and foundation work on the Trump fiasco … not too many what-ifs any more … using names and dates are always a bad sign for stupid Gaetz and Trump both … I think the ghoul will fade out shortly, nothing left to offer except a lip lock with Trump on Russia/Ukraine and THAT may already be a lock of another kind …

I look at the sorry mess in our House, McCarthy and a couple more louder than others that are totally bonkers … the timing is atrocious for the GOP, all roads DO NOT lead to the WH lawn … The Turtle has lost the polished luster of a REAL, self-absorbed leader, but continues to spout edicts as if our team has no spine or plans worth considering, a massive blow of BS flowing across Congress …

Our Senators are bad enough, but with the GOP push-in of young Barbie to our house and others some of us live in an area WITHOUT Democratic Reps …

At least, the GOP does not seem to be the giant elephant in the room as it once was, now it’s more like that leaf the fell from the tree last fall, and spent the whole winter under snow and now, it is time to finish the process and fade into fertilizer for the new Biden crew …

I’m not sure when the ultimate hammer will fall, but Cohen’s statement may be right on, or a little short, as the sabers in NY are beginning a dull roar as they make ready to swing the THOR solution at the whole GOP …

  3. Welcome back and hope you’re on the comeback trail. Call out to the poster who recognized the etymology of your lovely name.

  4. You’re back!!! I missed you!!! And thank you for being a political junkie—-and making the sacrifice of your eyes and ears to make sense of what is going on.

  5. It’s funny the Gaetz team says they’re “champing at the bit” to take on the government’s lawyers. Using a racehorse metaphor in a fight analogy doesn’t make it sound like you’re confident in the fight…it makes it sound like you’re eager to make a run for it.

Which probably makes it one of the more honest metaphors they’ll use this whole scandal.

  6. Welcome back! I’m looking forward to getting caught up on my reading. Putting the white light on you and PZ. Both of you stay well.
