We are in an all out conflagration, folks. The main event, in 108 days, is the Biden v. Trump face off, take two. But between now and then there are a number of side battles which will be fought, I assure you of that. The gloves are off and it is this anti-Biden rebellion which has escalated tensions to the breaking point. Steve Schmidt has pissed a lot of people off. He may be a newly minted Democrat and a co-founder of the Lincoln Project, but he pissed off a lot of people when he began advising Dean Phillips. He walked that back, somewhat unsuccessfully but then he got into Pass the Torch and he’s back in the doghouse again. The “generational wealth” crack is a direct response to his advising Dean Phillips. We all make financial decisions but I truly think Schmidt made an unwise one when he began to advise the Talenti gelato king. And he followed that up with a catastrophically unwise decision by getting involved with the Pass The Torch PAC.

Peter Thiel is openly gay and the meteoric rise of J.D. Vance has been speculated to be Vance literally getting into bed with him. I put the emphasis on “speculated,” but think about it: Vance is a brand newcomer to politics and after two years of one Senate term he’s in line to be president of the United States? This is atypical, you must admit that. On the other hand, it’s such cliche to repeat that a gay benefactor has an automatic sexual investment in somebody. But that is a rumor out there. We will repeat rumor and speculation and mark it as such because hey, all’s fair in love and war and politics is war.
And politics in 2024 is freaking nuclear war. A lot of the people turning on Joe Biden right now will live to regret it when he retains the White House in 108 days — or whenever the race can be called. It would be a blessing if it’s clear enough to be called on Election Night and for that blessing I pray.
My opinion is that Steve Schmidt has pissed off way too many Democrats to be viable working in politics going forward. He left the Lincoln Project in 2021 to freelance, I suppose. I always respected his savvy as a strategist until he got with Dean Phillips. That was ill advised. This Pass The Torch PAC is flat out stupid.
Schmidt is going to find himself aligned with the Democrats who are knifing Joe Biden right now and that’s not a good place to be. His Lincoln Project buddy, Rick Wilson, has some context to offer.
As I’ve noted before, deciding whether Joe Biden will stay or go is not my job. I’m an apostate ex-Republican. I’m not a delegate to the convention or even a registered Democrat. The massive media and political pressure campaign is taking its toll, and the cracks are now showing more than ever.
The gamble taken by the Obama Alumni Network, the ringleaders in the “Dump Joe” campaign, is historic. [NOTE: I’m researching this. If anybody has a link to any pieces about the “ringleaders” of this ill advised suicide mission, please forward it to us here.]
No matter how this turns out, they’ve burned one hell of a set of bridges. If Biden stays and wins, they’re in the outer darkness forever. If he goes and Kamala or any other Democrat wins, they’re in the outer darkness. If we go into a messy convention, they go into the outer darkness. If Trump wins…well, see you in the camps, boys!
My biggest complaint about this effort’s political malpractice is simple: the Obama team was gifted with one of the most excellent political communicators in generations and thought they were why he won. This is the old saw that they were born on third base, so home runs look easy.
Their cultural and aesthetic dislike of Joe Biden has always existed. Even if you fully accept their political critique, this should have been handled privately rather than litigated in the media.
This is going to get messy, but there’s one tiny upside. All the investment in MAGA advertising and press attacks on Biden’s age represent billions of dollars wasted.

Never forget it was Schmidt who gave us Sarah Palin! Now, for a while there he tried to atone. He didn’t pull punches beating himself up over that mistake. I had to admire him saying ‘I sure as hell blew THAT one!’ and as you’ve noted he was a decent contributor to LP for a while. However gravity is ever present and there was enough from his old life a GOP fuckery that he couldn’t resist the siren call of his former self. Seeing more money for reverting to type he grabbed what was offered and returned to ratfucking Democrats.
