It was considered a potentially solid seat for the incumbent, but it’s not turning out very well. As a matter of fact, the pendulum is swinging the other way. Do we have a chance? Yes, if he can overcome the Graham Platner problem, which means some work needs to be done in that state. It’s going to take a fair amount of time for the Democratic Party to earn back voter approval. But what happened to some voters up there? Let’s look. With gratitude for Raw Story:
President Donald Trump’s headline-making assertion that voters are mad at Republicans — not him — has proven half true in a crucial swing state ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats and independents who say they’ve repeatedly voted for their state’s conservative senator told the Washington Post Saturday morning they refuse to do so again. Bridgham was talking about Maine’s “political powerhouse” Sen. Susan Collins — whom the Washington Post warned may not be able to rely on her usual cabal of blue voters in her fight to defend her seat from Democratic candidate Troy Jackson.
Now, isn’t that interesting? Blue voters for Sen Collins who will no longer support her? Blue voters. We’ll get blue voters “back”. If we do, we may actually be able to take the seat, and that would be lovely. That’s one more seat towards control of the Senate, assuming we keep the ones we have. That would leave three, and there are some candidates in trouble (Hello, Paxton? Hell is calling). The thing with Max Miller is in the House. Hope Mikey Johnson is having fun handling that.
The stakes are high for Collins and for both political parties. What will happen in Maine remains unclear, as Collins’ record in the Senate, her age (73), and the recent horrific killing of a 26-year-old Colombian immigrant have voters questioning whether they can afford to send her back to Washington, D.C.
The immigrant’s name is Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, and he was killed by ICE, who were doing a surge up there, but we don’t know if they’ve stopped. After this, let’s hope they did. But holy cow, ICE is trigger-happy. This was their fourth killing. There’s a lot we don’t know because they managed to keep it pretty quiet, including what went on with Susan Collins in the wake of this. Whether or not someone likes her, she can’t be blamed for an ICE killing. We have to give her that. But what she did after it happened, well, that counts. It wasn’t much, but it was something.
“I’m horrified that some young father who’s just trying to provide for his family just got basically gunned down in the street,” Bridgham said. Democrat Margaret Shaw, 74, also told the Post she will not vote for Collins as she’s done in the past. Shaw cited Collins’ decision to confirm anti-abortion Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination as “the crackin the teapot.” The teapot shattered during Trump’s second administration, she told the Post.
“Can’t she speak out?” Shaw asked. “Can’t she be like John McCain?” Theresa Boisot, 56, an independent voter who voted for Collins in 2020 and for Trump in 2024, told the Post that economic factors influenced her decision not to back the Republican senator again. “She’s taking money from other people, and she’s not giving it to us poor people,” said Boisot. “I just don’t like Trump, and I don’t like Susan Collins, and I think they both need to hit the road.”
BOOM. There it is, laid out for us. Senator Collins needs to hit the road. Can’t she be like John McCain? That’s a big ask and some very, very big shoes to step into. That man was a force of nature. Nevertheless, she’s always voted Republican, no matter how much concern she has for that side. And she’s really been very spineless and hasn’t done much. There are three Democrats who are done with her. We hope there are more. Let’s flip that seat.
