What a great thing to wake up (late) to! A headline shows him telling it like it (really) is to his fellow Democrats, and it’s about damn time someone said the quiet part out loud. I was hoping that after Senator Booker’s marathon, record-setting speech that it would make a difference in the Democrats. Instead, it seemed that it didn’t change anything at all. It’s about time they did. From CNN:
Democratic Sen. Cory Booker is imploring his party to fight back harder against President Donald Trump, arguing that history will remember some for their “complicity” in “bending the knee” to him.
Yes, it will, and they did. Look at the Big Beautiful Bill, and how it’s going to wreck the country. They could have worked with Republicans who were “on the fence” and tried to block it in both sections of Congress. Instead of just standing by and voting against it, they could have tried. But no. Yes, I know, it wouldn’t have made a difference. Yet it *might* have. Trying is better than not trying.
In a wide-ranging interview with CNN’s Manu Raju, Booker argued that Democrats can gain credibility with voters by showing they’re concerned about the American people rather than their party. The New Jersey senator also weighed in on whether his party should embrace its most progressive wing and urged his own state to consider redrawing House maps to fight back against a GOP-led redistricting effort in Texas.
That’s some shizzle going on in Texas. That is absolutely what they’re trying to do – redraw the districts to give Republicans more seats. And they’re not even trying to hide it! Trump asked. They answered. Of course, it’s *Texas*, and we won’t get into that part. What is our country coming to that something like this can happen, and it’s not even a census year? This is one example of how the rot has reached the outside and is in public view.
Booker clashed with Democrats this week as he sought to amend several bipartisan police benefits bills with language that would stop the Trump administration from withholding Department of Justice grants for political reasons – arguing it is already happening in New Jersey. In impassioned remarks, Booker said members of his party are complying with Trump as he “violates the Constitution” and “trashes our norms and traditions.”
How many places have lost their DoJ grants? How many schools have lost their grants? Look at PBS and NPR. They lost their funding and are shutting down. They’re something incredibly important, and they are shutting down. Look at USAID. Good gods, what a loss. Look at everything that has lost its grants because Trump doesn’t approve. A man with dementia doesn’t approve.
I’ve been pissed about this for a long time. Yes, I know we were shell-shocked by the loss of the election. We should have picked ourselves up and gotten back into the fight. PZ was doing that nearly right away. With few enough examples of courage here and there, Democrats are spending far too long licking their wounds. Time to stop. And in the meantime, reach out to your elected Congress members about what you are seeing in our country.
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that of all of the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, with the exception of one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to keep going in our quest to tell the truth about Trump and see democracy survive. If you can help, please do. Thanks. Ursula

Expecting the rich and powerful to police their peers is beyond reasonable belief. I’ll look for Christ to return before that occurs.
Ouch! But … our normal is this now. How sad is that? The side of this that’s ours is just painful.
