The House Republicans have quietly tucked language into a procedural measure that effectively removes their ability to undo the levies. They have declared the rest of the year to be one long day so they don’t have to vote on them. Yes, another way that they are bowing down to tRump. Congress is supposed to be the THIRD branch of government, not toadying to the executive branch. When is a day not a day? In tRumpland.
It shows they are aware of how toxic this issue is to the party, but they don’t seem to have the courage to face up to it and DO something about it. It clears the way for a vote later in the day to prevent a shutdown. It CYAs them from having to fight against the Mango Mandarin. They would probably roll over and play dead anyhow.
The national emergency law lays out a fast-track process for Congress to consider a way to end a presidential emergency. It requires a committee consideration within 15 calendar days after one is introduced and a floor vote within 3 days after that. Seems pretty straightforward, right? But they don’t have the balls to do it. Between the Confused Carrot’s wrath and Muskrat’s threats of primarying, Republicans are running in fear.
The country is in so much trouble. Stocks are tanking. Tariffs mean higher prices. Good people are being fired in the federal government. They have a chance to STOP this and are too afraid to do so. Democrats have their hands tied. But they can make public comments expressing their distaste for this nonsense.
“The speaker is petrified that members of this House will actually have to take a vote on lowering costs on the American people,” said Representative Greg Meeks, Democrat of New York, who introduced the privileged resolution to vote on overturning Agent Orange’s national emergency, which he declared on February 1st. “If Congress can’t act to lower prices, protect retirement savings and hold the president accountable, what are we even doing here?”
Yes, what ARE we doing here? Democrats in the Senate could still try and force a vote to end the tariffs. But in order to terminate these tariffs, a resolution would have to pass both chambers and then be signed by tRump. The buck stops there. It won’t be signed because he is having too much fun with these threats. He refuses to see how it’s hurting the country. He is refusing to see what it’s doing to countries that *were* our allies. He is refusing to see how it affects the view of our country to the rest of the world. All because he won by 1.5% and Republicans grabbed both chambers.
I’m at a bit of a loss as to what to do next besides support my Democratic members of Congress. I’m trying to help work towards midterms. I’m trying to help us take back the chambers. And I write.
*****And now, please read a very special request from our awesome boss******
Friends, if you can afford to support the site with a donation or if you want to go ad-free with a subscription, it would help us continue the work. I’m sure the rest of the Democrats will tune back in in the due course of time but for right now only the hard core political junkies are here and we thank you for being one of those. We have a long, hard task ahead of us to get out of this mess and it all begins with having information. Ursula

He See’s it but doesn’t give a shit! plain and simple.
Oh, yes, I agree. And the chance to stop him is pretty much gone. I was just re-reading an article about ways he could possibly get around the two term limit. Not fun.
What we’re seeing is what happens when lunatics run the asylum.
Into the ground.
That’s a great way to say it! I agree!
tRUMP & mUSK-MELON are having too much FUN! It’s ALWAYS BEEN GAMES for these Rich PSYCHOPATHS! If the DEM’S, Indy’s don’t get their s..t together ASAP, WE are DOOMED!
Musk-Melon? That’s goooood and I need to remember it! It’s challenging to find nicknames for Musk. There is a chance that the Senate Democrats will be able to stop this bill in its tracks. Let’s hope they can do it! The power of the purse belongs to CONGRESS, not the executive branch!
Congress is the FIRST branch, not the third. Article one is Congress. Article two is executive. Article three is judiciary.
