This is something we didn’t see coming, and Trump probably didn’t, either. This has been building for a while. Trump has gone off the rails. He is playing favorites and has managed to “primary” two different people out of their seats. Republicans in Congress are pissed. They should have done this a year ago, when they could still handle Trump. But as the apparent dementia takes hold, all bets are off. My regards to Raw Story:

In a deep dive on Donald Trump’s “bad week” that prompted a massive Republican Party revolt against the president, who is used to having his way, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the outburst against the president’s proposed “slush fund” was a direct result of their existing discontent with his GOP primary meddling.

And again, they should have done this a year ago. But should have and did are two completely different things. Let’s hope it’s not too late for them. We can give them that much. The trainwreck thus far has been annoying and fascinating. We are trying in Congress, and as I’m reminded over and over, there’s not much they can do being in the minority. But we can’t get comfortable. The Republicans have woken up now, probably, with “exceptions” for Lindsey Graham and Speaker Johnson. Johnson showed a flash of “enough already” last week, but it’s unlikely he will stay that way. He works in the shadows and the light for Trump and Trump alone. Lindsey Graham? He’s hopeless. He is a rabid dog for Trump. These two don’t count.

This week, they revolted en masse, fed up with Trump’s insistence on settling personal scores and pursuing pet projects at the expense of their legislative agenda. The “tipping point” came Tuesday when Trump endorsed scandal-tarred Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the state’s Republican Senate primary runoff — a move that stunned many of Cornyn’s colleagues, the Journal is reporting.

Paxton against Cornyn. Paxton is gross, disgusting slime, and needs to be stomped on, then thrown into a dump yard and buried. Cornyn has morals and talent that Paxton does not. We do NOT need Paxton in Washington, in Congress. He is a walking disaster zone. Trump made a very bad decision. He’s been doing a lot of that lately. But Republicans are pissed and pushing back. It’s about time they showed Trump they have spines.

Republicans hold a 53-47 seat majority in the Senate. The report notes that GOP senators have warned that Paxton — who was impeached by his own party, later acquitted, and is in the middle of a divorce initiated by his wife on “biblical grounds” — could force the party to spend tens of millions defending a traditionally red seat.

It’s not just could spend. It *is* spend. Cornyn is a far superior choice. Republicans need to keep being angry and support Cornyn with all they have. Trump endorsed someone for spite. Trump is “primarying” members of Congress who have done some sort of minor thing, and he is completely overreacting. Trump does not have guardrails anymore. Maybe it’s time that Republicans dropped some of theirs and really fight back. They have a good idea of what their constituents are feeling, especially with the BUB and the Iran war. They can see that Trump is thinking about doing something worse than he already has, with crippling sanctions for Cuba that are starving the people. That needs to stop, or rather, not go any further than it has. We don’t need to invade for some piddly, baloney excuse. We didn’t want the Iran war in the first place. One would hope Congress remembers that, too. So, Republicans, it’s time to roll up your shirt sleeves, continue to be angry, and fight back.

See you soon!

Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that, of all the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. A political analyst on the PBS Newshour said last week that this shows the unspoken agreement is over. Where mainstream repubs just kept their heads down and went along with the administration’s agenda, they were ok and left alone. Now, since he can get people just as rabid and obnoxious as he is, he will.
