Maybe we will find out in some election post-mortem why J.D. Vance decided he would reach out to the gay community and claim it as Trump/Vance territory. All we know for now is that that community is laughing at him and he’s got mud all over his face. Vance let loose a whopper today and yesterday when he started claiming to know the minds of gay male voters. He went so far as to claim that “me and Trump will get the vote of the normal gay guy.” That did it. Normal gay guys began coming out of the woodwork and guess what? They’re voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

“Not sure what a ‘normal’ gay guy is,” replied Democratic strategist Matt McDermott, “but speaking as a fairly typical gay guy I can confirm that myself, my husband, and literally every gay guy I know will proudly be voting for Kamala Harris and rejecting your grotesque bigotry.”

Podcaster Vic Vela posted a gif of a young man staring confusedly at complex trigonometry equations with the message, “Me trying to figure out if I’m a normal or abnormal gay guy.”

Washington Post contributor J.J. McCullough expressed his sarcastic delight with Vance’s categorization of homosexuality.

“If there’s one thing gays love,” he replied, “it’s being classified by straights as either “normal” or “abnormal.”

Rep. Eric Sorenson (D-IL) took Vance’s comment as an opportunity to share for whom he and his partner Shawn had voted in the upcoming election.

“Just a couple of ‘normal gay guys’ who proudly voted for @KamalaHarris and @GovTimWalz,” he posted.

Mark McDevitt, chief of staff for Rep. Lori Trahan (D-MA), questioned the authenticity of Vance’s comment.

“It’s rich to hear JD Vance try to talk about ‘normal gay guys’ as if he hasn’t spent years pushing the idea that being gay alone is abnormal and immoral,” McDevitt wrote. “Now he wants to move the goal post to create divisions within our community. It’s gross.”

That is a howler on its face “normal” gay guy. I can tell you that every gay or lesbian friend I ever had mentioned to me their feelings of knowing from a very early age that they were “not normal” — by society’s definition. They felt fine with who they were, what freaked them out was how that played out in the larger world. And let’s face it, prior to maybe the past fifteen years or so of gay people getting more widely accepted, the LGBT community has had a rough row to hoe.

Vance is not good at olive branches. And he was not brought on for that. He was brought on to sanewash Trump and sell the MAGA agenda as a permanent Republican manifesto. This is one more instance where it went south.

    • Hmmmmm… I saw some writings along the way about a segment of our hetero male population that have not only experimented, but have regularly participated in male-to-male sex “on the down low”.

Vance’s relationship with Thiel may just be viewed in a different light, especially after the “sofa sex” debacle…..
