I suppose that last minute surprises are possible but as of right now, early evening at the debate site, if Melania is there, she’s keeping herself well hidden. Here’s a link to NBC News if you want to hear Kristen Welker pointedly inquire at least four times whether Melania was on the airplane with Trump and all four times the response is, “I don’t have a list of names.”
No, but the most important name on the list would be one you would know, right? So only one of two things going on here: It’s cat and mouse time. Karoline Leavitt knew that Kristen Welker would ask and so she didn’t want to say “no” because then that begs the immediate question of “why not?” And nobody wants to go there. And if Melania does show up then surprise, surprise.
Jason Miller was also asked if Melania would be there. His ludicrous response was, “I would expect we probably make our announcement at the debate.” I don’t think you’ll need to “announce” much of anything. She’ll either be there or she won’t — unless there’s some Invisible Man spin about to be done. Maybe Melania was present during a terrible accident in a research laboratory recently and now she’s invisible?
That’s actually a good gag. Hear me out, now: Trump tells the MAGAs that they need to donate to a special scientific fund to bring Melania back to visibility. This isn’t a cheap thing to do, so the MAGAs will be told to dig deep now, right? And it’s an ongoing grift, which for Trump is the best kind. And it suits everybody’s purposes. Trump gets donations, Melania stays out of sight, and the MAGAs believe whatever they’re told and go without things they need in order to serve their messiah.
I think it’s such a great idea I’m going to send a memo to Jason Miller and see if I can get hired on Team Trump, for the specific purpose of coming up with these gems.
In all events, unless Melania shows up later, via some other conveyance, she won’t be there, which we knew. What is intriguing about this is that there’s not even the illusion of propriety. Melania has clearly given up and taken her leave. Trump isn’t bothering to fight about it, why bother?

In plain English, if you got these two back in the White House, you wouldn’t have either a president or a First Lady, just two people with those titles, phoning the job in from the golf cart, spa, whatever.

I totally agree with you. My interest in this subject comes from the fact that as horrible as the optics of this are, Melania doesn’t give a shit. She’s actually that detached. That’s what fascinates me. You don’t see this kind of a thing in politics. Being a political spouse is a job classification in and of itself and there are expectations. Melania flat out doesn’t give a shit. Her absence both tonight and throughout the hush money trial, etc., tells us everything we need to know about this “marriage.”
