This is not a small thing for Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy to do, skipping the ceremony honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the Capitol Rotunda. Statesmen of both parties have lain in state at the Capitol and been honored. Ginsburg is the first woman and the first Jew to be so honored and at a time of political division such as this nation has never experienced. On those facts, for McConnell and McCarthy to refuse to honor their duties as two of the “Big Four” of leadership is truly egregious. They’ve made it clear that Ginsburg is not their hero, she is ours. They’ve made it clear that the nation is split along cultural lines and that they are part of keeping those divisions in place, rather than helping them heal.
Mitch McConnell will not be in attendance at the ceremony at the Capitol honoring RBG this morning. Nor will Kevin McCarthy.
Normally, a ceremony of this magnitude is a bipartisan affair where the so-called Big Four (w Pelosi & Schumer) present a united front.

The casket of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is carried up the steps of the U.S. Capitol, past House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, where she will be the first woman to lie in state. https://t.co/FZh8qHi8MG pic.twitter.com/ESeiEsmSbb

This is inexcusable and it is bewildering as well. What possible good can come out of McConnell and McCarthy snubbing Justice Ginsburg in death, not to mention Pelosi and Schumer? They’re just going to look petty in the history books. That’s the size of it.
Today America says goodbye to a great woman. Tomorrow the fight begins on filling her seat. Whomever Trump chooses may fill Ginsburg’s seat, but I highly doubt that s/he will come close to filling her shoes.
What POS. Hateful. True to form, they are going to lose everything in the biggest blue landslide, and they know it, that’s why they are doing this, they have no reason to fake it anymore, why pretend to be honorable?
Very sad.
Any woman that supports a serial rapist for president along with the rapist on the supreme court needs to be committed to the psychiatric hospital for being suicidal. Don’t know why people expect decency from demons.
Ursula is writing about healing the partisan divide. One thing we can do is be being careful with words. Trump is an alleged serial rapist, and Kavanaugh is an alleged attempted rapist. Otherwise, we should be more precise than the Trump supporters and even Bernie supporters who say that cannot vote for a rapist (based on a questionable allegation).
I don’t give a rat’s ass about nice as long as Trump’s around. And when he’s gone, ANYBODY that makes ANY excuses for him will get the same treatment. You got a problem with either of those things, well, you’re in the wrong room. Manners are for when the smoke has cleared.
I did not say be nice. I said be careful with words. Then I gave examples. It is not about niceness; it is about precision.
Vote them out! Vote them out!
That’s what they are afraid of.
If anything, them staying away WAS the decent thing arguably.
I was going to say that at first.
Same here. Given that McConnell was literally saying before the evening was out last Friday he’d push through a replacement nominated by Trump his contempt for Justice Ginsburg was there for the whole world to witness. I was appalled that Trump showed up across the street yesterday. I said over on DK he probably didn’t object to appearing and wearing a mask because he could mutter insults at her casket. And that what he really had to fight NOT to do was pull that sucker down and spit on it. Yes, we’ve seen over and over again how politicians who didn’t like someone will show up as a means of protocol to pay “respects” but in this instance, the rank hypocrisy is such that if I were in Speaker Pelosi’s position I’d have ordered the Sgt. at Arms of the House to physically prevent McConnell (and Meadows too) from getting into the Hall.
They didn’t want to have that coffin open and a hammer come down on them.
ETA: Her trainer, who works with other judges as well, came to pay his respects…and dropped and gave her three pushups.
My thought is that they can’t “look her in the eyes” (so to speak) or their Democratic counterparts.
Tribalism Over Decency.
Isn’t that the Republican credo? If it wasn’t before, it is now.
Always was. Let’s make them pay for it.
has been since about 1960.
That was my reaction as well, noting that the Rabbi gave a very short set of greetings as she started. My next thought was that, for an official Lying in State, all the top officials of both Parties SHOULD be in attendance; what happened, did McConnell do the right thing and resign his Office?? **THEN** the CNN commentators said that this was a private, by invitation, ceremony, to have a small gathering due to Covid distancing. Oh well….
It was reported that they WERE invited!
If you substitute “class” for “tribe-“ and other anodyne nouns in this piece.. you have something, Ursula. Reducing this to obvious political postures is wimping out
They just don’t have morals and decency to begin with
