During her highly emotional testimony last Friday, Hope Hicks, Donald Trump’s former press secretary, and White House communications director, dealt the former president and his team of attorneys a damaging blow. At one point she was asked, “Is it fair to say that, during this period, Mr. Trump was concerned these reports could hurt his standing with voters?” “Yes,” she said.

But in an op-ed for MSNBC, Molly Jong-Fast, host of the podcast Fast Politics With Molly Jong-Fast, pointed out one particularly tragic fact, that is unfortunately true.

“hicks’ testimony about the ‘Access Hollywood tape confirms a grim reality: people voted for the man who bragged about sexual assault because they couldn’t face voting for a woman,” jong-fast, who is also a special correspondent for Vanity Fair. “the revelation should have sunk his campaign then and there. looking back, it’s hard to imagine that it didn’t. but he prevailed. perhaps he wouldn’t have, had mcdougal and daniels been able to share their stories. and perhaps roe v. wade would still be the law of the land, had those stories been shared and not caught and killed.”

What happened to Hicks’ moral compass? We know she cried during her testimony, but no one can tell me that she didn’t understand how harmful that Access Hollywood audio was to women, and what this would portend for us if he became president.

“what is tangible is that hicks was, like so many other members of trumpworld, deeply focused on delivering for her boss and not bothered by the ethical and moral implications of her acts,” jong-fast writes. “Therefore Hicks’ testimony should be a moment of painful reflection not just on her as an individual, but also on the shirked responsibility of so many who chose to disregard evidence of what Trump promised.”

So many people knew what direction this was heading in and could have weighed in but chose to do nothing.

As we’ve been told time and again, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the 2016 election but failed to gain the necessary electoral votes to clinch the nomination. While we know this to be true, I think far too many voters (especially white, Christian conservative males) hold attitudes about women that are outdated and certainly didn’t do Clinton any favors. So Hicks’s testimony, while it definitely hurt Trump’s defense, lays bare how women have been harmed because too many voters just weren’t comfortable with the idea of a woman leading the country.

“and now, women in many red states are forced to bleed out in parking lots because they’re not ‘sick enough’ to treat,” jong-fast writes. “this conservative supreme court might not exist if one person in trumpworld had done the moral thing and come forward before the election. but none of them did — maybe because they were ideologically blinded. or maybe because they just wanted to deliver for their guy.”

I don’t know if it is time for a reckoning but all of Trump’s pigeons are coming home to roost. And we could have avoided this, but there are still too many white, right-wing Christian males who think the woman’s place is in the home. Hillary Clinton isn’t perfect either, but if she’d been elected, would all this time and taxpayer money be wasted on criminal trials? Would we have three conservative justices who laid waste to Roe v. Wade? Would she have made us look like idiots on the world stage?

We are reaping what conservatives have sowed, and I for one, don’t like it one bit. Not one bit at all.

  1. And of course if Bush hadn’t cheated with the’ hanging chads’, abetted by a partisan supreme court, (ruling oh so quickly), we would have had Al Gore, a realistic start on climate change, and no change with Roe vs Wade, possibly no 9/11, no twenty years of war in the middle east, etc etc
And if Reagan’s perfidy had been exposed earlier….

We can stop crooked greedy, sold-out republicans and the damage they cause, by voting Democratic.

    From now on.

  2. I’m an old white guy who didn’t just vote for Clinton but worked on her behalf. Given my disability getting out there for door to door canvassing was no longer practical but I could and did make calls and sent postcards. And reach out to people from my hometown in southern Illinois and a similar community I worked in in the eastern panhandle of WV for ten years (a town and area much like where I grew up) both of which were Trump territory. Hell, I worked in social services (managing the care of developmentally disabled adults) and most of my co-workers, almost all women were Trump supporters!

Yes, male voters overall went for Trump. His claim of 52% of the women’s vote was misleading but he did get 41% of women overall which I still find astounding. And yes 52% of WHITE women to vote for him. So males have to take more of the blame, but women have to accept a substantial share too.

    • What on earth would make so many women blind to the horrible monster Trump has always been?

Was it a different interpretation of his asininely awful performance of a serial rapist and false statement of, “They really like that”, that he made for everyone to hear while on the bus?
Alarm bells went off in my own head, when I heard that crap …

Was it his simple-minded glitz of riding the escalator down to the crowd at Trump Tower?

Every thing Trump does, FAILS, running for the elections will be no different from the last one, a sign that there ARE actually MORE brain powered individuals in among the Democrats, the cattle train that IS the Republican/Magats, is on the wrong track … It ends right at the highest cliff in the country, without any thing to stop it in its fall to hell …

  3. It made no sense to me in 2016 and still doesn’t, how so many people can support him. I know the GOP spent decades maligning Hilary’s character and that was very effective. It seems a lot of people cannot see him for what he is.
