Rep. Matt Gaetz is becoming more like his idol, former President Donald Trump every day. Both have stretched the truth beyond recognition. Both also seem capable of delusional thinking. Trump is still yelling about the “Big Lie” and Gaetz (R-Fla.), earlier Monday, declared that no one has ever accused him of wrongdoing.

Does Gaetz have a short memory, is he just trying to sweep things under the rug, or does he actually believe this?

Who the heck knows? I do happen to believe the old adage that if someone tells the same lie over and over again, they come to believe it. Maybe that’s what Gaetz is doing. He is, after all, up for reelection in 2024, and he faces at least one Democratic challenger and one GOP challenger.

So, who knows? Maybe he’s trying to put some distance between himself and his past troubles.

But Monday, Gaetz was reacting to claims from former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy who asserted the Florida Congressman had him removed to stymie a probe by the House Ethics Committee into allegations that Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl, according to Raw Story’s Kathleen Culliton.

“there’s not a single human being who has publicly accused me of any wrongdoing of any kind,” Gaetz said. “at what point after these things have been said about me, for years and years, and not a single person has even accused me of wrongdoing, does this sort of become a strange urban legend?” Gaetz asks cnn’s jake tapper, who looks rather skeptical.

You have to wonder how Gaetz can even insist on something like this. The clip circulated all over social media and was ridiculed widely.

“uhhhhh,” posted the lincoln project’s rick wilson.

McCarthy, ousted from the speakership in 2023 by a group that now has the nickname the “Gaetz 8,” pins the blame for his removal on the Republican Congressman, but neglects to mention him by name.

“i’ll give you the truth why i’m not speaker,” mccarthy said. “it’s because one person, a member of congress, wanted e to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old.”

That’s probably what led X user @ArtCandee to reply: “Kevin McCarthy would like a word.

But we also have to remember that McCarthy worked with Democrats to head off a looming government shutdown and that irked one heck of a lot of Republicans, The Guardian notes. That’s right, all these lovely people would rather shut down the country and put people out of work than do anything constructive. And while Mike Johnson, who’s not particularly good at his job either, is also trying to work with the Democrats and we know where that’s leading as well.

And Twitter users had even more thoughts about Gaetz’s claims that no one has ever accused him of wrongdoing. As always, the smackdowns are funny and quite fitting.

  1. So is a subpoena to appear in court, in a deposition in a civil lawsuit alleging he had sex with a 17 year-old, a public accusation?

Yes, why yes it is. A legally recorded one, as well.
