What a difference a few weeks make. Gun festishist and QAnon congresswoman Lauren Boebert gave an interview in front of bookshelves crammed with guns earlier in the year. Then when it came time to give an interview to Newsmax about the Boulder shooting, the original set was struck, and a Colorado flag now featured prominently, where assault rifles had ruled before. She thought nobody would notice, maybe?

Not easily buying an AR may have kept him from killing 10. Handguns are for close range, or require lots of training. Other rifle platforms don't get follow up shots or acquire multiple targets so easily. High volume killing is what the AR platform was invented for, and it shows.

This is exactly the issue and the gun crazies keep looping around it. It is the assault rifle, a military grade weapon, that is responsible for all these deaths. Handguns will protect you. At one time I owned a .357 magnum and was a crack shot with it. I grew up in Colorado and a lot of people hunted — with shotguns, not assault rifles — and ownership of guns and learning how to use them was part of the culture and not a big deal. The likes of Ted Cruz and Lauren Boebert would have you believe that you can’t protect your person or your domicile without immense amounts of fire power, and/or open carry. This is insane.
And what is really insane, is that there is so much anti-government fear mongering that it’s become a right-wing talking point. You need to keep yourself armed to the teeth, have a stockade in each home, because one day the gubmint is going to kick in the door and there you’ll be. There are You Tube videos that depict these things.
Michelle Bachmann, another wingnut, used to talk about how FEMA facilities were going to be used to imprison people. Bachmann opposed the census because she claimed that Japanese people were interred using census data and then-president Obama was going to do something with census data — maybe imprison white people — in reparations for slavery, maybe? Who knows? But FEMA camps internment was a raging conspiracy theory there for a while.
This culture of fear and disinformation is what Boebert, Cruz, Fox News and the rest of them are feeding into. It will be fascinating to see if this Democratic administration is successful in getting gun reform passed. It did not happen for Clinton or Obama. Perhaps Biden can swing the bat. Although I am not hopeful at this exact moment, frankly. This is an uphill slog, still.
Yes, defend your home with an assault weapon and take out a dozen neighbors as a bonus! Sheesh.
We all thought, a few years ago that it would be an impossible task to find someone more stupid and vacuous than Sarah Palin.

Actually there was a law in place, in Boulder specifically, that would have prevented the shooter from buying the weapon……and a righty judge named Andrew Hartman overruled it days before the purchase was made.
The judge has blood on his hands just as if he sold the shooter the weapon himself.
When I was younger, I had a 3030 mainly to shoot marmot that overran my x mother in laws farm. As far as I’m concerned, AR’s shouldn’t even be sold to the people. Military only. Get them off the streets.

My father taught my brother and I gun safety and how to shoot when we were young. We had had a single-shot .22 rifle, dad had a Japanese copy of a Mouser 7.65, and a 12 gauge shotgun. Later on, I owned a few other guns, several .22 rifles and a couple of .22 pistols that I used for target shooting. I got rid of them all when I moved in with my girlfriend and her 5 year old son. Neither of us was comfortable having guns in a house with her child. Now all that I can afford are air guns. The point is that I never thought that I needed an assault rifle, or even any rifle or pistol with more than a 10 round magazine. No one does.
BTW, I can hit what I aim at, something that I bet most of these AR toting idiots can’t do!
