Ron DeSantis should look on the bright side. He may not get the GOP nomination for president but he could probably make a fortune as a political consultant telling others what not to do in a campaign. So far he’s made so many mistakes that he could conduct a master class in how to tank a campaign early on.

The Guardian is writing that DeSantis is alienating people right and left.

By almost every measure, the rightwinger has had another lackluster week on the campaign trail, with “clumsy” missteps in New Hampshire, Texas, California and New York. Now, barely one month after his glitch-ridden launch on Twitter, DeSantis finds himself sinking in the polls, closer to the large field of optimists below him than the twice-indicted, twice-impeached former president who retains a stranglehold over the Republican party.

“The more voters learn about him, the less they can stomach the idea of him running the country,” the online magazine Jezebel concluded. […]

“I used to characterize DeSantis as an awful lot like Trump, but smarter, and I’m not sure that applies any more,” Craig, the UF professor, said. “He just seems to be doing things that are not all that smart, his war with Disney for example, and some of the other things he does show a clumsiness that wasn’t so much apparent before he began being a national figure.

“I think he’s still a credible threat. But he’s going to have to get his act together. He’s showing some weakness and you can’t really do that if you want to knock off the big guy.”

But the real nail in the coffin is coming from former Maryland governor Larry Hogan. CBS News:

“I think [Ron] DeSantis has really underperformed,” Hogan told CBS News’ Major Garrett on this week’s episode of “The Takeout.” […]

“I think the [DeSantis] campaign is one of the worst I’ve seen so far, and he’s dropped like a rock,” Hogan said. “I think it’s getting close to being over.”

Hogan says DeSantis is “smart,” but when asked to describe DeSantis’ missteps, Hogan didn’t hold back: the culture wars, “dumb comments” about Ukraine, “He just doesn’t connect with people,” he’s “not a good campaigner,” he’s “not a good debater.”

The first GOP primary debate is scheduled for August 23.

Wokeism is “all DeSantis seems to want to talk about,” Hogan said. “And I think that’s part of the reason why his campaign is doing as badly as it is or, you know, underperforming expectations as much as it is.”

People care about jobs, poverty, homelessness, health care, reproductive rights, Social Security, Medicare, the list goes on and on and nobody gives a damn about “woke.” And nobody wants to go to war with Tinkerbell and Mickey Mouse. Is DeSantis going to finally wake up and smell the coffee? Or, is he going to keep on tripping over his own shoelaces in his out of touch, Bizarro world quest?

  1. So, let me see if I’m getting this right-they can’t stomach DeSantis but they can stomach former guy? I get it, these are ‘pubes and therefore not the sharpest knives in the drawer but I’m just not seeing much to choose between these two. And this guy is the closest competition for trump? Pretty pathetic group. Thing is, the ‘pube base actually does care about the war on “woke” so why is DeSantis so repugnant to some of the most repugnant people on the planet? Sure, that stuff doesn’t win general elections but he ought to be doing better amongst the ‘pubes themselves. Go figure.

    • I think the Trumpers like DeSantis when he stays in his own lane as Governor of FL and kissing Trump’s ass. They don’t want him challenging their deity. Trump doesn’t have much charisma; however, DeSantis has absolutely none.

  2. On the plus side, right-wingers have mostly stopped repeating “woke” like drunken parrots, because it’s now a punchline for the failing DeSantis campaign.
