That’s the real problem with the obsession with power. You get so blinded by the power itself, and so desperate to possess it that you tend to forget who actually bestows it in the first place. And that’s House Speaker wannabe Kevin McCarthy’s current problem.

As we speak, The Grim Reaper of the Senate, Moscow Mitch McConnell, who knows more about obtaining and wielding power for breakfast than Kreepy Kevin knows all week is giving a master class. Knowing what a feckless clod tool McCarthy is, and what a klown kar demolition derby his caucus is, McConnell is negotiating with Chuck Schumer and the Democrats on a $1.9 trillion federal budget that would keep the government open until midnight on September 30th, 2023. And while there are a couple of speed bumps, it looks likely that the 2 sides will be able to bring the plane in for a landing.

Which is making McCarthy apoplectic with self righteous fury. From the day McConnel started negotiating, McCarthy wimped his wimpy way in front of a pdum to castigate McConnell. Why would he want to make a back room deal at the 11th hour when the House gets the gavel in less than 3 weeks? Just negotiate a short term extension that takes us until mid January, and let us use our newfound power to negotiate a longer term deal. All he’s doing is cutting us off at the knees with this stuff.

You’re absolutely right Kevin, he is cutting you off at the knees, and for good reason. McConnell is capable of using a clear, linear thinking process. And right now he sees a potentially positive Senate map for 2024. And the last thing he needs is you queering up his quest for Senate Majority with a protracted, idiotic government shutdown in your first 2 weeks as Speaker. Which is why McConnell is a master tactician, and you are a political imbecile.

Here’s where the Democrats’ early Christmas present comes in. If there’s one thing that the last 3 voting cycles have shown, it’s that almost all voters, Democratic, Republican, soft Democratic, soft Republican, independents, and the ascendent young voting bloc have shown, it is that they are sick and fed up with partisan political gridlock, and destructive partisan political games. From where I’m sitting, the only reason the Democrats didn’t take a bloodletting in 2022 was because they accomplished so much that most people were willing to give them more time to prove themselves, while also allowing the GOP to prove themselves too.

And so, what is McCarthy’s response to McConnell trying to actually govern, while McCarthy knows he’s on the shortest political choker chain in history? He is publicly whipping his insaniac caucus to vote against the deal McConnell is brokering. In the last 5 weeks, McCarthy has made more deals than Howie Mandel, and most of them seem to depend on giving away the $1 million briefcase. And one of the things that the GOP nihilists in the House want are severe cuts to Democratic social spending in any long-term budget deal. If McConnell does an end around, he can’t fulfill that promise! And if he can’t, why would they vote for him?

Merry Christmas, Democrats! Because McCarthy is playing desperation ball while swimming in his own flop sweat, he has made his objection to the long-term spending deal public. All every darn Democratic incumbent has to do is to find a camera and microphone, step in front of it, and wail like a banshee that while they’re trying to work with the GOP to do the people’s business, the brand new, as yet unappointed Speaker is on his hind legs to kibosh the deal, and force a calamitous government shutdown, in order to consolidate his own personal power.

This is the gift that just keeps on giving. First of all, in the event that there is a government shutdown, the Democrats will have already branded the GOP House as the culprits. And you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Second, there’s that pesky 20-25 member moderate conservative House caucus. They already know that they’re from vulnerable, white suburban swing districts, and their chances for re-election in 2024 is dependent on how the GOP performs for the next 2 years. And if McCarthy’s Speakership campaign slogan is “Shut down the government!,” he’s going to have a brand new Never Kevin caucus on his hands.

There is nothing I enjoy more than the blind leading the stupid. But in this case, it’s actually reversed. Because while Kreepy Kevin McCarthy is blindly running around chasing power, it’s the stupid that are leading him around by the nose. And there’s a wild card in the deck that can make the whole damn bunch of them look like morons. Don’t touch that dial.

  1. I don’t have much of a cable lineup but it includes weekday reruns of the Andy Griffith show. McCarthy has pulled another Barney Fife – shooting himself in the foot! You’re quite right – Democrats shouldn’t look this gift horse, or rather elephant in the mouth but rather pull out the bullhorn and shout it down.

  2. All the Democrats need is four semi-sane Republicans to cross the floor and anything they want gets passed. Isn’t that more likely than the Republicans remaining united about anything at all?

    • At this point, WAY more likely. People keep forgetting that the margins of this GOP “majority” are way narrower than most previous ones. And that the fabled Republican unity is all but gone, especially among their caucus in the House. Just add in a Speaker of the Dems’ own choosing and their wins in the lower chamber turn Pyrrhic.
