Michael Scott Moore was taken hostage in 2012 and held for 2½ years by Somali Pirates when he went to their homeland to research a book.

In his account of the ordeal — The Desert and the Sea: 977 Days Captive on the Somali Pirate Coast — Moore describes the various ways the pirates made him miserable, including cuffing him around and breaking his wrist, but in at least one respect the Somalis had more respect for his comfort and dignity than the Trump administration’s DHS:
