It’s so wonderful living in this surreal world of MAGA politics. Why, just now I typed a headline about a gubernatorial candidate being miffed at a drag queen that she used to invite to perform in her home until the candidate decided to jump on the anti-LGBTQ hate wagon and now she’s threatening to sue the drag queen. I absolutely guarantee you, nobody was writing headlines or stories like this in the Eisenhower era, except Mad Magazine. Now they’re out of business and this entire culture of 2022 has become Mad Magazine. You are what you read should become a new motto and if you’re reading anything about politics, here or in the New York Times, you are Mad Magazine.

If you missed Durrati’s piece yesterday, hit this link and read it now. It has all the back story that you need. Succinctly, a drag queen named Richard Stevens has parted company from Arizona gubernatorial MAGA candidate Kari Lake after she posted an anti-drag queen piece on Twitter. Twitter responded with photos of Lake in costume with her drag queen friends and praising them. This was reported on by other media beyond Twitter and Facebook so now Lake is incensed and by God and by guns and by golly, she’s going to sue everybody. (Pro tip, Kari: the truth is an absolute defense to defamation.)

This is the original version of her campaign’s statement, which was edited later before release. CAVEAT: I am getting this on Twitter and I can’t independently verify it at this time. I will keep trying and let you know if it’s not what it purports itself to be.

This revised statement, without the first few paragraphs, is what went out.

The issue may simply be that Stevens has campaigned for Katie Hobbs, Lake’s opponent for governor, should she win the GOP primary on August 2.

I don’t know how she’s going to sue anybody for anything, when there are pictures and her own tweets to corroborate Stevens’ story. I guess we’ll find out. But the interesting part is the sanctimonious self righteousness, the lashing out, “cross me and I’ll sue! I’ll sue, I tell you!!!” Yawn.

Let’s see what the next shoe to drop is. Kari Lake is out over her skis but that has been the case for some time. She can go jump in the lake.

  1. How does someone go from being gay friendly to gay bashing? That’s some weird whiplash. Also, someone w/this history thinking they could run for state-wide office w/no repercussions? Just asking the question, ala Trumper Carlson.

    • I don’t know what Kari Lake’s angle is. I assume money and fame. She saw Trump, who is a nothing but who had a TV presence, go straight to the Oval Office. I believe she thinks that since she’s a TV presence, she can do the same thing. Just my take on it. But for Trump I doubt that the woman would have developed any interest in politics.

  2. The complete defense against defamation is that it is the truth.

It doesn’t look like she has anything to be worried about.
