The internet thinks that Pope Leo XIV appeared to give Vice President JD Vance the cold shoulder Sunday after his inaugural Mass in Rome, and social media users are reeling over the questionable moment.
The Catholic convert was one of the last officials to meet with Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, who frequently criticized the Trump administration, particularly its extreme immigration policies.
In a clip shared on TikTok showing Vance’s Sunday interaction with Leo, Vance can be seen approaching the head of the Catholic Church with his wife, Usha Vance. The couple shakes hands with Leo while having a brief conversation. Naturally, TikTok users had a lot to say about the pope’s body language during the seemingly strained moment, with many taking guesses about how the Chicago-born pontiff felt in that moment.
This is just the start of what made me decide to write about it. I was already giggling about the title of this Huff Post article and the more I read, the better it gets! If my comments are shorter than usual it’s because I’m laughing.
“He does not like Vance. Body language is everything. Wow,” one person claimed.
Another commented, “That shrug by the pope in the end was a ward off evil shrug.”
“You can tell the Pope was relieved when that interaction ended,” someone else alleged.
A separate user pointed out that Vance had “zero manners” after he was seen reaching out to Leo’s arm in the clip, writing, “jd vance has zero protocol, he tried to touch the Pope like he was his bro. zero manners. Ughhhh.”
Another user claimed Leo “had to shake it off after Vance walked away.”
A social media user on X, formerly Twitter, joked that Leo “shooed JD Vance and his wife away with a single hand gesture, telling them to move along,” calling the moment “hilarious.”
Aw, yea. Maybe the new Pope doesn’t want to touch Vance because he’s afraid he’ll die the next day. (Mean, maybe a bit, but still funny.)
Vance’s meeting with Francis at the Vatican less than 24 hours before the latter’s death also sparked criticism from social media users, who made joke memes claiming that the Catholic leader’s death was caused by the vice president’s visit.
Gee, ya think? Vance is never going to live that down, and he deserves this. He is as much of a walking disaster as El Presidente Imbécil is. He seems to think he has a whole bunch of power, and can say anything and expect it to be taken as “gospel” when he really doesn’t and can’t. (See the pointless accusations against Zelenskyy, and also the shizzle speech at the Munich Security conference.)
Much like Francis, Leo has expressed disapproval over the Trump administration’s immigration policies, namely when the then-bishop shared an opinion piece from The Washington Post by Cardinal Timothy Dolan in 2015 titled “Why Donald Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric Is So Problematic.”
His apparent disagreement with President Donald Trump and his allies continued as recently as February, when the now-pope shared an article on social media that took aim at Vance with the headline: “JD Vance Is Wrong: Jesus Doesn’t Ask Us To Rank Our Love For Others.”
WHAM. Busted! His loss of face is going to trickle over to the Mango Mandarin Messiah’s side and that’s deserved, not good, and is going to anger His Lowness. I will also laugh when reading about this. Too bad, so sad. busted. He should learn to keep his mouth shut. He never will. Thanks for sticking with me!
