Iranian Hackers Used Ginni Thomas in Fake Email to Trump

As has been reported, the Justice Department has charged three Iranian hackers who sought to use fake identities in order to target the Donald Trump Campaign as part of their crime. Thankfully so – we have already seen what foreign actors can do to our elections. But as part of their deep fake, they used Ginni Thomas’s identity in order to get an “in” with people associated with Trump. The indictment doesn’t specifically list Ginni but it’s impossible to not know it was her, making Ginni Thomas a victim of the crime. Fine, prosecute the lot of them.

But the more interesting question is why they would use a Supreme Court Justice’s wife for such a purpose? By all rights, anyone near a Supreme Court justice should be as far removed from the matter as Iran – well, not that far but pretty close. And yet, there they were. As per CNN: 

The indictment doesn’t identify Ginni Thomas by name, but it states that between April and May 2024, the hackers used the persona set up in the name of the justice’s spouse send spearphishing emails to a former homeland security adviser to a former US president, among other targets.

Alright. Let’s break this down a bit because one thing of which we can be sure, these guys were not amateurs. If agents of a foreign government seek to hack a presidential campaign, they don’t send teenagers. This is serious work to get serious stuff with international implications. So they used Ginni Thomas for a good reason – they were tempting the campaign.

None of this falls on Donald Trump personally. But the Iranians had to believe that someone in the campaign would not be surprised, indeed intrigued, by such an email. That alone spells trouble. As much as we might detest Justice Alito, no one would seriously think to use his wife’s identity to fish. It was Ginni, the woman who at least involved in some events surrounding January 6th and was quite active as NPR reports:

Thomas emailed Arizona state lawmakers, asking them to “stand strong in the face of political and media pressure” and “take action to ensure that a clean slate of Electors is chosen and Thomas messaged with then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows about efforts to overturn the election results, according to reporting by the Post and CBS News.

So we already know that she’s strongly involved with all things political in the Trump ecosystem and thus the hack. It is extremely disturbing that the SCOTUS itself would be so politically involved with a past and perhaps future president. Justice Thomas has yet to recuse himself in what must be the most obvious conflict in SCOTUS history. This is not complicated, but the pillow talk might get pretty in-depth. Either she must refrain from such close relations with the campaign and Trump or Thomas must recuse himself. Your local magistrate wouldn’t hear a case from a business at which her husband works. Why this? Trump alone should rule her off-limits but he has not and likely will not.

Of course, we do have to remember that Ginni Thomas is most certainly a victim of this crime. She absolutely should not be shamed for the fishing expedition. No, but she should have to address – again, the obvious implications of her political career.

And yet she hasn’t, Clarence hasn’t, and the world seems to know it.
