I Believe Mary Trump. Here’s Why.

Yeah, yeah, we did it. So what? We pre-ordered Marty Trump’s book last night. Nota Bene I have steadfastly refused to pick up a single one of the 26,289 books so far on Trump, his campaign, or his presidency. Why should I? I have spent the last 5 years in his hip pocket, paying close attention, mostly so I could sit down and tell youze guyz all about it. Why do I want to read about that shit in my spare time?

But Mary’s book has an attraction that I’m just totally unable to resist. Not only is Mary the first actual family member to write about Trump, rather than a friend or employee, but she is also a certified, practicing clinical psychologist. She has spent her entire life observing and interacting with Trump, and as a psychologist, is actually qualified to make diagnoses of Trump based on his behavior and actions. And she does, long sections that were read last night were written dispassionately, describing things, and then providing a possible diagnosis. That kind of thing gets to me.

Here’s a perfect example. One of the more controversial sniglets has to do with Trump’s college days. After high school, Trump attended Fordham University, but according to Mary, to increase his influence in his fathers company after graduation, he decided that only a diploma from the University of Pennsylvania would do, If only for bragging rights. Trump already had his sister Mary Anne doing his homework for him, but worried about his GPA, he hired a fellow student who was a whiz at tests to take his SAT’s for him to ensure he got into Wharton.

This revelation floored me. Because to me it meant that, all the way back at the age of 18 or 19, Donald Trump had already chosen his path in life. And that path was being a lazy, useless moron, built entirely for image rather than substance. Any college degree that Trump obtained wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on, since he absorbed absolutely none of the information that was being imparted to him, but the fact that he paid for a degree from Wharton showed that he already knew the secret to starting higher up was a fancy college name. Fit that in with what we see every day.

Of course, Trump and the White House are furiously disputing that claim in the book, along with pretty much everything else she writes. Good luck with that message, it would be easier if we didn’t have examples every day that tend to prove that what she is writing is true. But there’s actually a very practical reason why it would not be a good idea for Mary Trump to lie about this stuff. It could be disastrous for her.

Trump, his sister Mary Anne, and his brother Robert all went to court and sued to try to stop Mary from publishing the book. Their reason was that she was violating a, what else with Trump?, non disclosure agreement she and her brother signed to settle a lawsuit regarding Fred Sr’s estate. While the judge ruled that publication could go forward, he has yet to rule on whether or not Mary is actually bound by the NDA.

Mary’s reasoning is simple. She feels free to publish because the NDA is null and void, since the lawsuit settlement is based on fraudulent activity. Through the business and tax records that she had legal access to, and provided to The New York Times, Mary learned that in the year prior to the probate proceedings, Trump, Maryann, and Robert transferred the vast majority of Fred Trump Sr’s wealth to hidey holes that they controlled, leaving only a Trump estate to be probated. These actions, she claims, deprived her and her brother of millions of dollars they were legally entitled to. Since the settlement was fraudulent, the NDA cannot be enforced.

But there’s much better, more personal reason not to lie about this stuff. Think of your own life, and your own feelings. If somebody you know, especially somebody close to you screws you over, you’re going to want some of your own back. And you’re going to want it to hurt. Bad. Bullshitting doesn’t do that, mostly because you know it’s not true, and it cheapens the revenge. Besides, if the lie is caught and called out, it makes it look like you had no legitimate beef in the first place. Ah, but the truth now, that’s a different story. The truth, especially if graphically proven, chills the revenge nicely. It not only makes your point, but it also ruins both their reputation as well as their egos. Much more satisfying all around.

And that’s why I believe Mary Trump. Her own name and reputation is on the line here, and knowing how seriously the media digs into everything involving her uncle, lying would be a dangerous proposition. I believe the book is due to drop into my kindle next Tuesday, and I plan on devouring it whole. Once I’m done, I’ll write you guys a nice little book report. Until then, keep those cards and letters coming, and write if you find work!

  1. Tight as money is I might wind up buying this one too, even though by then I’ll surely know most, if not all the really good stuff. Btw I like how you correctly point out Trump’s degree is from the University of Pennsylvania. Even in reporting the past few days supposedly knowledgeable “journalists” and talking heads (even on MSNBC) refer to his having graduated from Wharton. Undergrads ad Penn who major in business do take courses taught by Wharton instructors, but the Wharton School of Business degree is an MBA. Only GRADUATE students are actual graduates of Wharton. Undergrads are “merely” graduates of Penn, although it should be noted Penn is an Ivy League school. Then again, a deep dive shows a nice fat contribution to them from Fred Trump before Donald was admitted, and he apparently had trouble getting by. One of his professors was, back when Trump was self-promoting himself to the country via his ghost written Art of the Deal days called him “the dumbest goddamn student I ever had.”

Anyway Trump is and always has been a hollow shell. Well, not hollow. That thin skin has always contained not a human being but as toxic a mix of sludge, slime and nuclear waste as has ever been brewed up.

    • Actually Denis, it isn’t that bad…When Teri pre ordered it yesterday, it was only $14.95…And since we share a fanily library, we both have access to the same copy…

      • I suppose it could be argued as it’s a matter of how you look at it. Wharton is part of the University of Pennsylvania. As I said undergraduates studying business take courses at Wharton and can receive a Bachelor of Science in Economics. I’ve seen reporting that this is the degree Trump has, and also that his degree is in Real Estate which might not be as weird as it sounds. Many universities and their subsidiary colleges allow for creation of specialized degrees. But Trump’s only degree is a Bachelor’s. When talking about Wharton, and even from Wharton itself the personae is that claiming status as a Wharton graduate means having gotten an MBA or related graduate degree from the Wharton School which is in fact widely renowned. It’s important to emphasize the fact that it’s Wharton’s GRADUATE program that is so highly regarded both here and abroad.

Trump of course claimed, and since he had to admit the truth still implies (and the media lets him get away with it most of the time) that he’s got an MBA from Wharton. He doesn’t. Neither did his Bachelor’s degree come with any academic distinction. Trump of course has his transcripts locked down as tightly as his tax returns, but as with every other institution that publishes a program for graduation those who earn academic honors such as Magna or Summa Cum Laude are noted and Trump’s name is nowhere to be found in any such listing or in college publications that commonly notes such things.

Another point worth mentioning is that for a long time Wharton has widely and correctly been perceived as an extremely competitive graduate school when it comes to admissions. However, back in Trump’s day a full forty percent of those who applied were admitted. He of course had a connection with his older brother’s friendship with the admissions honcho and dad’s money, not to mention it now seems bogus SAT scores.

I’ll attach a link at the end but it’s worth pondering that one could assume any institution of higher learning would market the hell out of the fact one of their graduates became President. Penn/Wharton when it comes to Trump? Crickets. The most they will acknowledge is that he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1968. He’s never, ever EVER been asked, even since becoming President to speak there, nor given an honorary Doctorate as one might reasonably expect from a freaking IVY LEAGUE university who’s only graduate to become President is Trump! It sure as hell seems to me like they are embarrassed to be associated with him in any way. Perhaps once he’s out of office they’ll rescind his degree, although the fuss he’d kick up would generate the kind of publicity they don’t want. I think they hope he will simply run away and hide in shame if he gets his ass kicked in November and that within a couple of years no one will be talking about where he went to college.

  2. I ordered the book as well, but it’s back-ordered until late August. Thanks for the snippets, Murph; as much as I despise Drumpf, I’m looking forward to reading it.

I also ordered Bandy Lee’s updated book, “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump.” There’s so much wrong with Drumpf, and I’d really like to see what the experts have concluded.

    • If you have a Kindle, you might want to order from Amazon…Since it’s an electronic download, there’s no delay or having to wait for new copies to be vut and sent…And I’ve seen portions of the book you’re talking about, and that’s why I an looking forward to THIS one so much…All those doctors diagnosed Trump based only on what they could publicly see…Mary has spent her life observing this froot loop, and she’s fully qualified to diagnose him…

  3. But you’re portraying that her motive for writing this book is revenge. That’s not favorable to her, and it pretty much ruins it for me. I don’t look kindly on revenge. I’d like to think she wrote it out of a need to inform the public.

    • Um, Annette, to put things in a bit perspective, I’ll paraphrase that old saying made famous as a song by the Persuaders: There’s a thin line between justice and revenge.

  4. Excellent advice. We will see if they heed it, or if any of this occurs to them, since I don’t know if they read your blog………..livejumps.com
