Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day. At least not if you’re Donald Trump. It’s still early and the day is going south, bigly. Another poll came out this morning and lo and behold, it showed Kamala Harris kicking Trump’s ass. That of course led him to say that the polls are “rigged” and we’ll get to that in a moment. But for now, rejoice in the facts that: 1. Harris is rising in the polls like mad, 2. Trump is on the ropes, and 3. If this trend continues we are going to be popping some champagne corks come November. The key to this election, moreso than possibly any other election in history, is that Harris win by as much of a margin as possible. A close race will activate the election denying crazies. Any result will activate the crazies, but a close race will be problematic. A clear and decisive victory, at least as much as 2020 but preferably more, is the only way to defuse the stolen election conspiracy drivel. Meanwhile, here’s what’s ruining Trump’s Monday morning.
The polling team at UMass Amherst is releasing their latest national presidential survey this morning. It has Harris leading Trump nationally by three points, 46 percent to 43 percent—compared to a four point lead for Trump over Biden in their January poll. Not surprisingly, Harris does better on who would handle traditional Democratic issues like reproductive rights and health care, while Trump prevails on more traditional Republican issues. But Trump has only small margins on those issues—53 percent to 47 percent in handling both crime and immigration, for example. The Trump campaign would certainly wish those margins to be much higher.
Similarly, Harris leads Trump on personal characteristics like honesty and likability, but keeps the contest closer than one might have expected on traits that might have been thought big winners for Trump, like strength (only 54 percent to 46 percent) and patriotism (only 52 percent to 48 percent). And by 57 percent to 43 percent, voters think that Harris is more moderate than Trump, an indicator that the effort to define Harris as radical isn’t working—so far.
So much for Trump saving the country from the San Francisco radical, as Tom Cotton characterized Harris a few days ago. I guess the scriptwriters are going to have to get busy and come up with some new material, because San Francisco radical is bouncing off, bigly. It isn’t sticking at all.
And that’s Trump’s problem. He needs to find something to stick to Kamala. He had no problem with Crooked Hillary, because Hillary Clinton ignored those jibes for the most part and that wasn’t the way to handle them. I believed at the time and believe now, that if Hillary had fiercely battled Trump back and put him in his place, she would have been way ahead of the game. But temperamentally, Hillary was not a person to show strong emotion or throw Trump’s slurs right back in his face.
What Kamala has going is that she’s happy to deflate Trump with “say it to my face” and “prosecutor vs. a felon” which are short and sweet phrases which communicate directly that she’s not taking any crap from him.
So the likes of Sebastian Gorka can characterize Kamala as a “DEI hire” all day but it is not sticking. Gorka recently was completely vile and that said Kamala’s qualifcations were “a vagina and the right skin color.” Hey, by those standards, I guess Michaelah Montgomery, Trump’s Black female MAGA mouthpiece, could become attorney general of California and then a senator and VP, right? Wrong. Kamala worked to get where she got. Nothing is being “given” to her.
And the truth is that Affirmative Action and DEI were resented and mis-used by white men since the inception of these programs, because the purpose of the programs was to hire candidates who previously hadn’t even been allowed to apply for certain jobs, due to gender or racial discrimination, not to “give” anybody anything. I was a radio announcer in the 70s when women and male POCs started to be allowed to work in broadcasting, so I know whereof I speak. I worked with some very talented women and I was considered talented as a broadcaster, and then occasionally there were some real dingbats that got hired so that an angry male supervisor could say, “See? This is what they’re making me do.” This really happened. It was common knowledge but nobody talked about it, except privately.
Point being, Gorka is talking to the wind. And Trump is flailing. He can’t find anything to stick to Kamala and he better find something soon. I do expect Michaelah Montgomery, as the Voice Of Black Women (in Trump’s fantasy world) to get up and earn her pay regularly and that should be laughable. I do look forward to it.
Now, as promised: Donald is claiming that the polls are rigged. When he was leading, the polls were as good as gold. Now, they’re rigged.
In an all-too-familiar fashion, the Trump campaign is once again in meltdown mode over recent polling data. After Vice President Kamala Harris quickly took the polling lead within a couple weeks of her entrance into the race, Trump’s team has now taken to dismissing the numbers as “fake” – a move reminiscent of the former president’s signature strategy of crying foul whenever the tide turns against him. For months, Trump has bragged about his polling numbers, constantly saying “I’m leading in every poll, by a lot!” Now that he’s losing, his tune has quickly changed.
According to the latest from pollsters, Harris is outpacing Trump across multiple metrics. Nate Silver’s model shows Harris with a 50.5% chance of winning compared to Trump’s 48.8%. In Silver’s averages, Harris leads 45.5% to Trump’s 44.1%. Even the right-leaning Real Clear Politics averages now have Harris up by a slim margin of 0.2%. Over at FiveThirtyEight, Harris is now at 45.1%, leaving Trump trailing at 43.6%.
In response to this unfavorable data, the Trump campaign released a statement from Senior Advisor Brian Hughes, accusing the media of bias and manipulation:
“The Fake News Media continue to help dangerously liberal Kamala hide her record of economic failure and soft on crime policies. Now, as this analysis shows they’ll even put a finger on the scale of polling to inflate results for her. This analysis is why the American people are seeing through it and will not allow this national gaslighting campaign to win. Despite this manipulated result, from CBS/YouGov it’s worth noting that in July and August of 2020, their data showed Biden leading by 10 nationally, reflecting a net positive movement of almost +10 to President Trump this election cycle.”
Biden won in 2020, as you recall but Donald doesn’t, still, and so his claim of bias in 2020, as an example of the bias now, is somewhat falling flat. The bottom line is that Trump needs to worry about substance in this campaign, now that he’s lost the foil of “weak, frail, confused,” and similar descriptors, Biden. He’s got a different opponent and he needs to find a way to beat her and so far calling her a “moron” (Junior’s word) and a DEI hire and such is falling very flat.

Trump’s cakehole moving? LIE!!! That is unless he’s chewing on his bucket of KFC!
“…Trump needs to worry about substance in this campaign…”
Republicons have NO SUBSTANCE in any of their campaigns. NONE.
Since they have no message (other than Project 2025 and A47), all they have left is voter suppression and threats of violence. Hell of a substance ya got there, sparky.
Well, to be factual, ‘pubes/magat candidates don’t NEED substance in their campaigns what with districts gerry-mandered to hell and back.
von shitzinpants would be better at handling crime and immigration? Better how? Better at making it WORSE? That is what he did during the 4 years he spent squatting in the w.h. Metrics on crime & immigration are BETTER under Biden. Of course, if we had real journalism folks would know this and perhaps they wouldn’t sound so stupid when polled.
